Far Cry 5 keyart revealed

They might, but if you live in the south that plate is usually associated with tea party members and gun nuts. The further inland I go in VA the more I see that plate and most of the time there is a confederate flag sticker on the same vehicle.

Yeah, I hate that it's become the symbol of the alt-right. :(

another one from random people on Facebook.

shoot me if old.

I mean, this is just a lamer attempt at what has already been done better.

You are basically going up against the Super Westboro Baptist Church in this game, or some crazy ass doomsday cult. Is that how you see everyone across the isle from you?

No it's not.

But Trump certainly hasn't gone out of his way to distance himself from those people either.

What? Literally only on one Far Cry cover features the protagonist - the first one. Every other cover features the villain.

Blood Dragon does too i guess but that's an outlier

At the time I posted that I believe that 3 and 4 had the protagonist on it as well as the villain. I was mistaken as to the latter; I thought the dude Pagan Min had his hand on was Ajay.

And you could choose a character so it matters less, but there is a playable character(?) with a flamethrower on 2's cover. I think.

the narrative justification of a far cry game in the US needs to be iron clad.

for the life of me I cant think of any scenario that the internet or a call to 911 or to the fbi would resolve any conflicts the protag and a cult would have in (assuming) modern day america.

But I dont write videogames for a living. So lets see. autiosly optimistic, after loving Far cry 3 and slogging throught 4.

Sovereign Citizens and White Nationalist have been attempting and dreaming of creating isolated utopias free of all foreigners and corporate/government interference for years. Just take that to the extreme and have this be a group who bought and built up this isolated community in a remote valley up in the mountains of Montana. They would for sure control all means of power and communications, no cell towers or connection to the outside world. You could have a full scale war up there and no one would know. Montana has barely 6 people per square mile, it's the 3rd least densely populated state in the country and the fourth largest state in total sq miles.

If you want to have a government stand off that would potentially fit too. Ruby Ridge, Waco, Bundy incidents #1 and #2 lasted several days and weeks each. Waco siege was over a month long. You have an entire valley armed to the teeth and fortified by dissidents posing no real threat to anyone but themselves and the Gov will be super hesitant to just roll in there.

The original art for Far Cry 3 that turned into the box art has Jason buried in sand in front of Vaas, and Ajay was supposed to be on the cover to 4 till the dumb white/ gay controversy happened. But at the very least, the last two main Far Cry games have had art with the main character in peril with the main villain, so it's not too much of a stretch to assume the same here.

If you think a large portion of Trump supporters aren't religious nutjobs, you're absolutely delusional.

Depends on what you mean by large. No, I don't think the vast majority are Westboro Baptist church members or like minded supporters of that type. No, I don't think the vast majority are White Nationalists.

Its possible that 500,000 to 1 million of Trumps supporters are exactly what you think they are, absolute shitheads, and you are correct in saying that is a large amount. But it is actually proportionally small to the total number of people who voted for Trump and I don't think it is fair to generalize so freely. It makes you look like a lunatic.

Slightly optimistic.

Loved the setting of 4. But I couldn't make it past the first 2 hours. :x

Can't wait till 26th to see some videos!

Voting for trump makes you a lunatic tbh. He is unfit to lead a country, and his first 100 days have showcased that perfectly.

No, but I feel in the past two games, they have rested on the fact they have a "strong" antagonist to hang an average story/gameplay loop around. By average, I mean in these sense that I believe Ubi can do better.

Well yeah most definetly but we don't even know who these characters are, what personalities they have. We don't know how strong or weak they are so to think the gameplay loop might be weak again because this looks like their last attempts is a bit quick to judge imo.

I mean Anita is anti-violence, but she is right to question if it will be more than set dressing. I hope so!

Agreed. But it seems to me a pretty big assumption is being made to say the game's villains are white supremacists (unless I missed that part??). Ok, it's not a big leap as these groups tend to cross over, but everything in the image says to me religious anti government type cult.

On second thought, I'm actually most excited to see how angry this game is going to make some people.

I love that these people never seem to know about those groups that do exist/have existed. Branch Davidians? Ruby Ridge? The Bundy's? The Malheur Wildlife Refuge occupation was huge news and they just don't want to acknowledge it or something?

I really really hope they go for it and treat shitbag white supremacists with the seriousness warranted and don't make them in to cartoon villains.

Yeah, even if it's the same FC formula as usual, the setting/theme that they're teasing is definitely gonna make me buy this right away.

Yeah. There's no way Ubisoft is gonna try and make some big statement with their latest Far Cry game.

I see this game getting a lot of shit specifically because it will just be window dressing. I'd love to be wrong though.

Christ, people. This is a very striking setup and I'm excited for the game, but you need to pump the brakes on this "wow, so brave!!" stuff. Roasting middle-American cults/paramilitary compounds isn't controversial or rare. The game itself (or trailers, etc) might rock the boat a little more, who knows, but people assuming this game is going to Stick It To The Right Wing In General Damn How Badass are on another planet.

The villain character will be a charismatic and completely unhinged cult nutjob in a way that will be clearly villainous to everyone. It's a Far Cry game and Ubisoft wants a jillion sales. Most right-leaning players won't bat an eyelid. Some will, but it will not be the massive controversy some people seem to be hoping for. Do we go "oooooh, damn!!!!!!! the left-leaning crowd will HATE this!!!" whenever games feature communist dictators or whatever?

Predictions:

-This game will never actually say the words "left" or "right"
-This game will end on some sort of Both Sides Are Just As Bad shit

No idea why some patriotic white Christian Americans are automatically offended by this. Crazy white racist militia exist but that doesn't mean you're the same as them.

If they admit that, then they must also admit that not all Muslims are the same as Islamic extremists. And they don't want to do that .

This game is veering surprisingly close to my ideal Far Cry game scenario.

That scenario being an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a radicalized cult/militia in modern day US. Like a back country version of The Departed.

Do we have a lot of evidence of folks being offended by this yet outside of that Ubisoft Forums post?

Yup its gonna be controversial in some ways but the assumption this game is a "battle against the alt-right" / War on Trump supporters are totally misreading the key art imo.

Its going to be cultist religious miltia that want "Freedom" from the American government. With likely a few racist mentions / rants thrown in as that comes with the territory.

Image looks like a badly photoshopped movie poster. The characters and wolf on the right look badly superimposed. Which seems odd if they're 3D models - wonder if they took separate renders and composited them?

Not feeling that at all. Every piece of Far Cry reveal art has always made me feel "Yes, I want to visit that place and adventure there." Well, with the exception of the shitty Blood Dragon spinoff.

But this... I don't see it. I don't see Montana's landscape being as interesting as tropical islands or Nepalese mountains, and I find the idea of christian fundamentalists as bad guys tiring already and I haven't even seen a trailer yet.

I love Far Cry, though, so I'll continue to give this a chance as they roll out the press materials.

Basically I'm the opposite of this guy.

Im the exact opposite of you, every far cry has been boring to me, but this, this looks great

I could not have said this better!

Because they aren't so far from these militia's, ideologically. It hits a nerve. These groups are small government taken to the extreme, so supporting/defending them, even privately, is a bit of a "Fuck you" to the government.

The persecution complex is hilarious considering there isn't a single symbol of Christianity in the keyart. Self-fulfilling prophecy I suppose.
A church (not specifically Christian, but still), Last Supper reference, and the dog has what looks like a cross marking on its face
