Nearly every movie is a crime movie. But I'll say Rififi in the hopes that you'll watch it.

This is very general, but try South Korean crime and detective movies they are out of this world good.

would suggest something like Memories of Murder and or The Unjust to get you going

The Departed is the only one that I can go back to and watch over and over. I don't know what it is about that movie but I love it.

Sad that City Of God hasn't gotten a namedrop yet.

This is probably the one film thread where the fact that 90% of the movies mentioned being from the US isn't a matter of ignorance, but rather one of obvious dominance. Hollywood are the kings of the crime genre. That said, here are some healthy (and recent, since most of gaf will ignore classic suggestions) foreign alternatives, other than City Of God:

Melville's stuff. Samourai, Cercle Rouge. C'est le shit tres awesome.

French crime films from the 50's/60's in general.

In more recent years: South Korean cinema... Chaser, Memories Of Murder, I Saw The Devil, Yellow Sea, New Moon. And ofcourse The Thieves, on the lighter side of things.

Stray Dog. One of the most influential films within its genre too.

This has been on my To Watch list for a good while now.

Instantly i'm reminded of the greatness of High and Low, probably my favorite Kurosawa so far. The Bad Sleep Well is also pretty damn good.

Goodfellas is probably the best ever any my personal favorite. The others would have to be:

The Godfather and part 2
Casino
Heat
Donnie Brasco
Scarface
Ocean's Eleven

Indeed. Melville is a fucking god.

Cercle Rouge is insanely good.

I thought Cercle Rouge was bad. My friends and I cracked up at the absurdly long scenes with the guy and his cat in the apartment that didn't go anywhere. Movie could have used a lot of editing.

Some random ones:

Heat, Bound, Risky Business, Godfather, The Town, Die Hard, The Italian Job, Vertigo, The Maltese Falcon, Reservoir Dogs

And Grand Theft Auto . . . but it is a videogame series.

Here we go again with the hollywood mentality poisoning the minds of our generation. A good film has a voice, it isn't simply geared towards entertaining you. The understated world-building is one of the film's strongest suits and it pains me to see it's vision dismissed by modern audiences because they expect all movies to cater to their basest desires.
