Favorite early game Pokemon, excluding starters?

I think in Red you can find a Pikachu in the first forest you venture through. I remember being so excited when I caught it!

Otherwise, Pidgey because Pigot is a BOSS.

Side note is there a bigger disappointment than Beedrill? So cool looking, but completely useless from what I can tell

Mega Beedrill is very very very strong

Though that limits it to being good in only two games

I like the monkeys a lot. They don't scale into the late game at all, but I enjoy the type variety they introduce to the early game.

Fletchling from Pokemon XY

Oh look, a cute little robin. I'll probably use him until the second gym and then switch him out for the much better Pokemon that will surely appear.

*turns into hellfalcon that destroys the entire meta*

Throwing a shoutout to Taillow. Swear once it evolved into Swellow and learned Endeavour, I felt like I uncovered some gamebreaking bug to just plow through the game. Never got tired of bringing myself to the ropes, only to fuck over my opponent and use Quick Attack. So satisfying.

Also got to give a shoutout to Shinx, my first shiny Pokemon that wasn't a Gyarados, and even if it had a Jolly nature that shiny Luxray (nicknamed Lucky) is still the coolest 'mon I have.

Look at this motherfucker over here. Put aside your preconceived notions, even put aside your personal tastes, and just look.

The first thing that you've noticed is that this bird's hair is incredibly badass. But I'd like you to pay closer attention. It's very clear on further inspection that this bird has killed someone with his goddamn hair. It is dyed solid red from the blood of his enemies. I'm pretty sure that washes off too, so he must have just done it.

But then you look at his eyes. Stare into him. You know he's killed before. And when you see his eyes, that look tells you that he's willing to kill again. He's willing to kill right now.

So basically Staraptor is my pick.

I see Pikachu is in the OP, but he's my pick. I would literally walk around Viridian Forest in the grass until a Pikachu came up. I didn't care how long it took. I wanted one so badly I would spend (what seemed like at least) large chunks of time trying to get one

Edit: If we're not counting him as a starter from Yellow

Kanto: Nidoran Male, because Nidoking is badass
Johto: Phanpy, it's adorable
Hoenn: Mawile, it's cute and creepy at the same time
Sinnoh: Starly, cause it evolves into Staraptor da gawd
Unova: Petilil, cause Lilligant is the best grass type
Kalos: Espurr, because Espurr
Alola: Rockruff, it's cute and has 2 great evolutions

Spearow! In Gen 1, it started with Peck, which was actually a Flying-type move. Pidgey started with Gust, which was originally a Normal-type move. Had to have that tiny bit of extra damage against those tough, tough Caterpies and Weedles.

  • Learns Wing Attack at level 9.
  • Gains Intimidate upon evolving into Staravia at level 14.
  • Learns Close Combat upon evolving into Staraptor, Attack shoots up to base 120, speed sits at a respectable base 100.
  • Staraptor looks super dope.

You can never go wrong with Starly. My preferred regional bird.

I like how Starly looks okay but not stand-out, then Staravia looks freaking stupid as all get out, then out comes this beast of a bird in Staraptor.

Gen 4 was awesome.

All bugs are my adorable, precious children. Especially Grubbin and Spinarak.

And Nincada gets you Shedinja. And there's also Paras.

What am I to do.

Gen 1: Butterfree because of that confusion, but its sad it's not useful for the whole journey. Pikachu is close behind because I remember it being pretty powerful.
Gen 2: ??? I cannot remember what I can get other than Hoot-hoot, Ledyba, and Spinarak someone help me out.
Gen 3: I think you can get Ralts early. I knew nothing at this Pokemon at the time so when it evolved into Gardevoir I was very pleased.
Gen 5: Bidoof. It's goofy looking but I like it and with its Moody ability I kept it til the very end.

Gen 1 - Nidoran (Male)
Gen 2 - Mareep
Gen 3 - Ralts and Nincada
Gen 4 - Shinx and Starly
Gen 5 - Sandile
Gen 6 - Fletchling
Gen 7 - Rockruff

R/B/FR/LG: Butterfree
Y: Mankey
G/S/HG/SS: Gastly and Bellsprout
C: Poliwag
R/S/E/OR/AS: Shroomish and Ralts
D/P/t: The only correct answer is Starly
B/W: Lillipup
B2/W2: Riolu
X/Y: Azurill
S/M: Grubbin and Meowth

Honorary mention goes to Beedrill, who has 80-90 attack and 75 speed at level 10. Sucks after the first two gyms until you can Mega Evolve it, but still.

Side note is there a bigger disappointment than Beedrill? So cool looking, but completely useless from what I can tell

Dustox is just as shit. Bug/Poison isn't a bad defensive typing but it's a terrible offensive one, especially since neither Dustox or Beedrill learn Megahorn. Scolipede is mainly viable because of Speed Boost, although it'd still do well in lower tiers.

Kakuna's my favorite Pokemon, & it's definitely an early game Mon.

However, I also love Hoot Hoot, Hoppip, Sentret, Seedot, Shinx, Lillipup, Pikipek, & Grubbin (As well as Mankey when it was an early route Mon in Yellow, solely because you needed one for Brock).

Fire Red? Meowth
Emerald? Poochyena
Black? Panpour
Black 2? Riolu is busted
X? Fletchling
AS? Poochyena: Playrough Edition
Moon? Rockruff
