Favorite games of 2013 that rarely get talked about?

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

I had so much fun with this game. It's a shame I never hear anyone talk about it.

Puppeteer.

I got this on christmas day in the psn sale but still haven't touched it since I've been playing Batman Arkham Origins. I'll get around to it soon and based on the demo I have high expectations.

On that note, I'm going to say Batman Atkham Origins. Been playing it the last few days since I got it for christmas, and honestly it's pretty damn good. I'm fairly early in the game, but it's looking like the best game in the series so far and easily one of my favourite games of the year. People stopped talking about it pretty quickly and the game recieved a mixed reception in general, which is something I completely don't understand. Even if you use the it's just more of the same argument, why does that count for nothing for a game like Rayman Legends, which is not only more of the same but is actually worse than Origins? I genuinely feel there was a bit of a witchhunt with Arkham Origins just because Rocksteady isn't the developer.

Memoria is superb.

Games press pretty much forgot SMT4 and EO4 existed at the end of the year like I expected. Plan on buying the Millennium Girl. Press heaped a ton of initial praise on these titles before forgetting Japanese games existed again.

Soul Sacrifice and Ys: Memories of Celceta have been excellent.

Tales of Xillia was a joy, which came as a surprise to me because people were saying it was the weakest Tales game to come out yet.

And being somewhat real, I enjoyed Code of Princess quite a bit. (Released on eshop in 2013, so that counts enough for me!)

I honestly don't expect to be coming out with a real list for my favorite games of 2013 until I play all the games I wanted to play from 2013. Shame everyone is nipping at the bud to give the award away so soon.

Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV.

Both of these games by Paradox brought me into their fascinating game systems hard. The emergent game play and story that you build about your family / lineage / country is so much fun.

My only complaint is the way they hold back some cosmetic / audio fluff for microtransactions.

I'm still playing a few games (some named in this thread, such as Wargame). I also haven't touched GTAV or TLOU yet. So I'm a ways off.

I really want to see your thoughts on TLoU. :P

Back on topic Metro Last Light is a really great game that a lot of people here haven't played. :(

tl;dr: ni no kuni.

Anarchy Reigns and Pandora's Tower were some of my favorite titles this year that no one seems to give a shit about at this point.

Graned both of them were released in different regions and only just hit the west in 2013 but regardless i'm going to count them. Anarchy Reigns was a great brawler and brought back memories from the SP alone when I used to play streets of rage. I never even touched the MP and still absolutely adore the game. Pandora's Tower was such a nice breathe of fresh air this year when I put it into my WiiU to play it. The dark tone that is set throughout the game accompanied by the timer element to get flesh was great. Reminded me of the fun I had playing the original dead rising and having to work around the time limit. Also the Final Boss fights is one of my favorite's every especially because of the music that plays during it. Really sums up what a epic boss fight is. If nintendo pushed out more titles like that for their systems i'd be in heaven.

Defo Anarchy Reigns, even with SEGA screwing up the PAL / US release a multiplayer 3D brawler should have atleast sold enough to keep the servers running. Even those that bought it so many rage quitted after a couple of matches. (not that it was a perfect game but still)

I suppose The PS3 port of Ketsui deserves a mention considering PS3 owners have been demanding CAVE shmups for donkeys years.

Was Call of Juarez: Gunslinger popular? I never heard of the game until a week or so ago when I bought it on a XBLA sale and it blew my socks off.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon

I dunno, it's had tons of praise from the press and word of mouth gamers especially compared to Gunslinger.

Antichamber. Incredible puzzle game that nobody played. It had a sale on steam a few days ago and even then I hardly saw people in my fl buying it. Criminally overlooked.

Yes @ RF4. And also, AA5 for me.

I know that Zelda: ALBW received really excellent reviews and all that but still, I do think it gets kind of overlooked because it was released so late into 2013.

EDIT:

Ooh. I've been keeping my eye on that game for a long while now. Really tempted to get it but I have such a huge backlog of games right now. :\

Antichamber and Europa Universalis IV

Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV.
CK2 is from 2012 actually, though with the many tweaks and patches it's been getting (effectively changing the way the game is played) I can see why someone would put it in a Best of 2013 list.

Vita version is simply beautiful, and alot of fun on the harder difficulties.

Yeah, I have to agree with this - just bought it a few days ago (£9 in the current UK New Year sale) and started playing last night. Really solid, enjoyable game so far, with a surprisingly brilliant combat system.

Edit - talking about Muramasa Rebirth.

State of Decay,

i really liked state of decay but when i took a hiatus for 1 or 2 weeks i came back only to realize the entire city has been overtaken by zombies and a bunch of my crew is gone. i never played it again after that. it was a very bad move for them to implement mobile and f2p mechanics into this game

Divinity: Dragon Commander went under the radar despite my best efforts to the contrary. It's a really good and entertaining multi-genre title.

I've been playing Divinity: Dragon Commander over the past few days. I was aware of it when it released, but I quickly shirked it off because I greatly dislike RTS games. The reason why I changed my mind on playing it was because of its excellent and upfront launch trailer.

That's when I saw that it was this weird mix of RTS/3rd person dragon action hybrid with some grand strategy board controlling and interesting political choices that you have to make amongst your crew as you are slowly becoming an emperor. Despite playing on easy for now, I've still run into some challenge during the RTS battles, but I like that I can have some kind of direct feedback with using the dragon to destroy batches of enemy units.

The writing is also pretty exceptional with memorable characters and scenarios to boot. It's been a big surprise for me, and I'm glad I took a risk on it. I've pretty much heard next to nothing about it outside of some strong endorsements from Durante.
Awesome! Glad you like it. I didn't expect to see Dragon COmmander on the first page.

I see a lot of games that I like, but most of them have gotten more love than castle of illusion. Did the 3DS game really sour people on trying the remake?

Haven't really seen a single thing about Shin Megami Tensei IV. Thought maybe the series would get more love now that Persona is such a giant, but I guess not.

Another vote for Divinity: Dragon Commander. Absolutely adored the experience from start to finish and genre-blending gameplay. Rough around the edges but definitely worth playing.

For me, it was Stealth Inc. I found it to be a very fun mix of platform, puzzle and stealth. The rather poor presentation and graphics almost put me off buying but i'm so glad i did. Also has some of the best DLC.

Other than that, i'd say Puppeteer although that game was more about superb presentation. The game as a platformer ended up being a bit dissapointing, which is a shame. Pretty much the same can be said about Rain.

I wanted to get it, but I tried the demo and the input lag just killed me. Did they ever fix it?

Because if they did, I'll go buy the thing right now.

Wonderful 101.

You bastards. I totally get why though, Wii U locked and even as a diehard of the genre it is obtuse as a motherfuck.

I agree with The Swapper. Amazing game.
I still have to play Shadowrun (just bought it) but I also dont hear anyone talking about it. Was it just mediocre?

Agreed on the Castle of Illusion remake, OP. That game is simply gorgeous and the soundtrack rules. DMC and Metal Gear Rising seem to be getting overlooked way more than they should as well :(

Expeditions: Conquistador.

I bought it on a whim, despite not believing it would be very good. I ended up spending 40 hours and I am very happy that I did. I enjoyed the turn-based hex grid combat and the recourse gathering wasn't very annoying. There were some choices the player could make, but I won't know how much changes from one choice to another unless I replay the game.
