Favorite gaming moments of 09

Echoing the train part of UC2, but one very specific part - when you exit the tunnel. Before then, it seems just like another part of the roller coaster. Everything's happening so quickly and so much mental stuff happens that you don't even think about it. But as soon as you exit the tunnel and you're in the snowy mountains, not only is it visually beautiful, but you think "Oh god. I've been here before. And it involves me lying in a pool of my own blood on a derailed train..."

Absolutely fantastic.

- Finally getting to play the Bayonetta demo after salivating over every video I could find for many months topped absolutely everything else this year.

- Earning the Vidmaster Challenge: Endure achievement in ODST. (Requirement: Pass the 4th set on any map in Firefight 4-player Heroic Live co-op.) One of the most intense and rewarding two and a half hours of gaming I've ever experienced.

- Exploring a narrow corridor in a dark building in ODST and turning around to find a massive Hunter directly in front of me. Apparently he'd followed me in from the street.

- Seeing the space elevator fall apart while crossing the bridge in the Uplift Reserve level of ODST.

- Causing my rider to experience a particularly brutal crash in Trials HD. You had to be there, but trust me when I say it was hilarious.

- The first time I used the Batclaw to scale the exterior of Arkham Asylum in the Batman game of the same name.

- Watching someone else play through the airport level in Modern Warfare 2 and marveling at the callousness and poor taste of Infinity Ward. Not a "favorite" moment so much as one that sticks out in my mind.

The first time blasting Do What U Like in SingStar: Take That. It was awesome and hilarious. Cherry pie: you're not as cute as me.

Skipping across the water for the first time in the NSMB penguin suit. It was a "Hmm, will this work?" moment that is essential to every Mario game.

But most of all, the Bayonetta demo. Blew me away. Revolutionary. Unreal. The hype hasn't done this one justice.

There's going to be enough mention of Uncharted 2, so i'll go with...

flowerplaystation3ps3056.jpg

I played it from start to finish in one sitting, in a dark room with my headphones... easily one of the best gaming experiences i've ever had, let alone 2009. It says a lot without saying a word.

the Old Monk boss fight from Demon's Souls.

i had waited for years and years to see a game do this. i remember dreaming about the future when adventure videogames would have boss fights where the boss is controlled by another player online...

to see that idea finally realized in a game, and so wonderfully (the boss intro is fucking strange as hell and so awesome i dont even mind that its unskippable)... nothing else this year ever had a chance of topping this moment for me. especially since it came out of nowhere when i was playing it. i wanted to help someone by dropping my soul sign on the ground, but instead i was summoned by the mysterious Old Monk to be the boss against a stranger just trying to get through the level... i had no idea what was going on at first and it was just jawdroppingly exciting when i realized my role.

Uncharted 2: The single player so nice, I played it twice (which is a pretty rare occurrence for me). A lot of multiplayer memories, most stemming from close plunder matches.

Red Faction: Running, gunning, evading enemy fire whilst storming into a building into a building, strategically dispense 10 mines, hammer out, run some more, whip the camera around and hit the trigger. No game this year was as intense. 18 consecutive hammer kills in a FFA game was also pretty memorable.

Well I can't mention enough all of uncharted 2. Other memorable moments include flower, end of infamous, dq 5
when the game jumps a generation to when your kids join the party
, and Nsmbw.

Flower - Just amazing.

Uncharted 2 - Got back the stunning, sweep you off your feet feeling from playing the first few chapters of this.

Starcraft - Rediscovering this again. So good.

You've hit the nail on the head. That game really does promote some serious pyrotechnic creativity and...as far as it's a dreaded PR phrase...offers emergent gameplay not really found anywhere else.

If all else fails, mining dumptruck + tray full of gas canisters and single mining charge + top acceleration = early bailout and a press of the detonator.

Finishing the hub mission in X3: Terran Conflict. Dear god, this took forever but it was sort of a crowning achievement, a monumental victory in the everlasting struggle against logistics in that (absolutely wonderful) game.

The mod logistics and subsequent infrastructure control must be one of your delights!

I'd definitely go with the final boss in NSMB Wii.

Also, playing Here Comes the Sun for the first time in The Beatles: Rockband.

"Holy shit, that zombie is crushing my plants with a lampost!"
"Holy fuck that zombie is ridding a fucking zamboni!... is... that...a... fucking bobsled?!"
"How the fuck did that zombie get to the end of my plants? Oh, it has a pick axe."
"Dude, look at that zombie, it looks like... Micheal Jackson!?"

So many awesome moments...

I really loved the dry-ice mines and the final battle against Ophelia in Brutal Legend, mostly due to the set-ups being so good. From a gameplay standpoint I think when I finally wrapped my mind around both the stealth and combat elements in Batman: AA produced some pretty amazing moments.

Though SF4 has consistently given me amazing moments in ways that only a multiplayer game can. Defeating G1 Sagats with Dan? Outstanding!

If I'm just going to be pick one moment, then it'd be the final level of ODST. As per Halo tradition, it involves a
vehicular chase
, but I felt this effort exceeded attempts from past titles of the series by a very significant margin.

The
highway chase as you and 3 buddies try and scavenge whatever vehicles you can muster (those that haven't been blown to bits by the chaos and explosions going on everywhere, anyway) to catch up to the garbage truck. The sense of urgency as you need to rush and catch up and defend the truck, while also trying to keep yourself alive (and your vehicle, but that's less of a priority!), is really well-portrayed here. Constantly picking up new weapons and vehicles, fending off enemy assaults, having a team of 2 hold off the attackers while the other team grabs a new vehicle to catch up to the truck.
Coordinating a plan amidst this chaos is what co-op is all about to me. Such an awesome level. Such an incredible set piece. What really stands out for me is that the sense of urgency was very present and real; things weren't just waiting for you to get past a certain point in order to happen. You were the ones who had to rush and work on a deadline (or meet failure). Doing this while keeping alive and well-supplied was pretty hectic fun.

I've never seen those big zombies before and I've beaten the game. Are they only in endless challenge?

I could have sworn they were in the campaign... but if not then yes, minigames, puzzles and challenges only I guess.

Inviting friends over and then forcing them to play Noby Noby Boy. no one trusts me anymore, but man what a great way to fuck with people.

Uncharted 2 fricking TRUCK CHASE OH MY GOD!
Uncharted 2 Cat and MOUSE ... GOOD GRIEF
Uncharted 2 BUILDING IS FALLING
Uncharted 2 creater in the ice cave

Demon Souls OLD MONK WOW
Demon Souls Killing my first invader

Killzone 2 Killing assasination target by Sneaking into the enemy spawn as a sab and taking him out before anyone realizes.
Killzone 2 Making top 1%
Killzone 2 Beating the end boss

Batman Arkham Asylum...... Just all my plain out awesome moments

BattleField Bad COmpany beta Enemy at the gates style sniper faceoff from pretty close range... which ended with me getting a double headshot...

UNCHARTED 2 - MP Ice cavern.... 5 enemy's get the treasure... and I sneak up from behind and grenade ALL OF THEM killling them... then taking and scoring to win.
Uncharted 2 - MP Sniper/Pistole match... Sniping 5 guys then running down the halll to where I thought they'd spawn ... pulling out my pistole and get 4 kills back to back to back to back within seconds... as they were running up to me to try and exact their revenge.

those are just some of my awesome gaming moments... that instantly sprung to mind.

Actually getting to play a new Cave game for the first time in forever, despite all the RROD shit I'm going through.

Batman - second scarecrow moment, with the alley.
I came here to post this. Also the reason why Batman has made it my GOTY in that other thread.

There are a lot of other moments from other games but for me that was definitive for 2009. In fact Batman alone had like 5-6 awesome moments that defined my gaming in 09.

Another personal moment was when I had Ken and some other guy had Ryu online. He won the first round against me easily with some insane combos that I didn't expect coming. Then in the second round I did some insane combos on him that he didn't expect and it was an easy win. 3rd round felt like some pro match, where both of us kept poking the other with super safe moves so that we don't get punished. We kept our distances from each other and tested each other with random moves. Near the end both of us had 1/3rd life and a full Ultra gauge + super gauge. He gets me in a Shoryuken FADC into Super and I have 1 pixel of health remaining. His character does the animation for a Hadoken to finish me with chip damage but I had performed my Ultra on his heel while on my recovery! He eats my entire Ultra and I get the win. :D

- Looking at the clock and seeing that I was 4 hours into my first Torchlight session
- Getting the Dragonslayer achievement in Dragon Age
- The first time I saw the art in Ulduar, specifically the hub "wing" where Kologarn and cat lady hang out

When my Chun-li kicked the Shen-long in the face for reals, i screamed liked little girl.

One of my favorite was when I realized that Batman was going to be far better than I expected. Oddly enough, it had nothing to do with the gameplay but was just a small moment in the intro. When you are transporting Joker into AA, taking the elevator down and the lights go out. I was then thinking "Ok now it's time to chase him down". The lights come up and I see:

I was like damn, Bats. My friend was talking to me and he stopped mid sentence and said "Whoa..... Batman ain't playin'."

Generally, the prevalence of eastern European animation in the industry.

Little King's Story: Every boss fight was a treat and there were so many moments of absolutely adoring attention throughout, but I loved realizing that the ex-Love-De-Lic guys honored Moon: Remix RPG Adventure with the endgame.

Inazuma 11 2: Down 3-0 in the 2nd-to-last match due to lucky shots and my defense (which I concentrated on) botching their special maneuvers, I rallied after switching formations and scored the game winner from yards away from the box.

Half-Minute Hero: The hilarious introduction movie, Will This War Ever End, running straight into the title screen butt-rock Main Theme set the tongue-in-cheek tone flawlessly.

Machinarium: Robot Band Tune charmed me. I was not expecting Machinarium to evoke memories of The Neverhood series, given its influences.

Retro Game Challenge 2: Every minute of The Chief Is A Great Detective Part 1 And Part 2 was brilliant.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade: Momohime Versus Raijin felt like Strider in its risk/reward balance.

Mario And Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story: I wish the whole game was as hard as the gauntlet, even if the combat isn't on par with Partners In Time's.

Tekken 6: I took all comers at my college and won for about 1 1/2 hours straight with Sergei, Bruce, Emily, King, Asuka, and Zafina. I've never played a better Sergei, I think. I was fencing while they were wearing cement shoes.

Another Code: R: A Journey Into Lost Memories
I suppose it's an odd thing to comment on, but I was just really on my game for puzzles this year. I play Cing's games for the atmosphere as much as the puzzles, but there were some peculiar/tricky problems this time. I demolished every challenge the game had (even though it's not that hard) and blazed through the gameplay portions. It's satisfying to clear the bar by a foot, sometimes.

Chibi-Robo: Welcome Home: Questions that will haunt me in 2010: Who ate the ham? Who is the sink shark?

NHL 10: I always focus on defense and push quick transitions, so taking a beating from my friend only to pull off 2 quick full-rink break goals in the last 3 minutes to win the game shouldn't have been a surprise. Instead, he didn't talk to me for the rest of the night. ...He's fine, seriously.

Tales Of Monkey Island: Manatees. MANATEES.

Puyo Puyo 7: I'll admit it. Faux-epic-scale battles in cute puzzle games makes me grin like a fool. Plus, I absolutely dismantled the 2nd-to-last battle. It's among the best I've played, recently.

The Wizard Of Oz: Beyond The Yellow Brick Road: I really appreciate games like Earthbound 3 that set the tone from the select screen.

All of the "Autumn" section of the game relaxed me more than any game this year.

Gaming moment of the year was the final Boss fight in NSMBWii. Was clapping and cheering the whole way. So many "whoah shit!" moments.

Will never forget beating that game - pure bliss.

when the storm came down for the first time on the elevator out of the fields in Left 4 Dead 2's Hard Rain.

Super, super memorable. One of my favourite gaming experiences in a long, long while.

-The entire ending sequence of Assassin's Creed II, from the start of the final memory bank to the end of the credits.

-Playing DJ Max Technika for the first time. Such an awesome game to experience and a real reason to make a trip to the arcade again.

-
Murray
showing up in Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 3 and the hijinks that ensued.

-Beating Persona 4 and watching every minute of the Endurance Run.

-Staying up until 5am multiple nights playing Anno 1404. Napping as soon as I got off from work only to stay up all night again perfecting my city planning.

-Downloading a ton of Microsoft Indie Games with friends, getting drunk and laughing at how hilariously bad they all were.

-The final Scarecrow sequence in Batman. The entire game was such a pleasant surprise but that moment in particular stands out among the rest, I had a stupid grin on my face as it unfolded.

-Spending a weekend devouring Shadow Complex.

-Finally playing through The Last Express. That game is a masterpiece.

-Anything involving trains in Uncharted 2.

I'm drawing a blank here. Did nothing really wow me or is my memory just really bad at the moment?

Something from Uncharted 2 ought to have made an impression on me! I guess my favorite moments must have been the countless times I helped a girl up to a ladder and they kicked the ladder down for me. And if you stand beneath it, there's an animation where Drake stumbles out of the way! That reminded me of Resident Evil 4. Pretty cool I think.

Playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii together with two friends was fun! Way fun. I think one of my best moments was being the first one to learn how to grab another player. :D

Then I think from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story when Bowser said: "I build bridges and get things done!" Don't know if that's verbatim but it was definitely one of my best moments. I try to quote it as often as I can.

Just watching the attract screen video in Ninja Gaiden Sigma loop over and over. It's fucking brilliant. But I guess that wasn't released this year? Oh well, I was late with that game.

Playing level 1-1 on Demon's Souls for the first time, I was I could do it again.

While playing Socom, someone actually took their guitar and started singing a song about me and how bad I was. I'm not even joking, it hilarious!

Playing Risen killing everything in sight only too find out I'm left alone on the island. ( Such lulz)

Resident Evil 5 everything, lickers, Mega Bosses, WESKER!!!!

Resident Evil:DC Replaying RE2 in First Person wow, old school RE difficulty, Krauser being a douche. End boss

Tekken 6 ragequits, spam complain, king players, lili players, alisa players, getting kicked from rooms. lulz shit arcade mode, lulz again for shit tekken force main stay.

Resident Evil 5: Beating it on Pro with my buddy in co-op. It took us over 50 tries to kill Ndesu. We refused to use unlimited ammo too. Tough but so very satisfying!

Red Faction Guerrilla: I had to destroy an EDF bridge, but I accidentally crossed that bridge with the EDF chasing me. They blew up my vehicle right when I was crossing it, forcing met to jump out and fight it out on the bridge I had to destroy. The bridge was crumbling all around me thanks to explosions and vehicles crashing into it. One half of the bridge succumbed when I shot down one of those EDF airships. It crashed into the bridge. I was cut off the mainland because I was holding my ground on a piece of bridge that had not been destroyed yet. Surrounded by a fall to certain death I kept destroying EDF vehicles, the bridge shaking and making noises until I ran out of ammo. Finally the remaining part of the bridge collapsed with me on it. I was buried between the wreckage but I survived! Mission accomplished.

RFG was full of moments like this but this one I remember most vividly. RFG is truly a game that drives on emergent gameplay.

Uncharted 2: The game in itself is memorable, but the convoy sequence is pure gold. When I beat a survival co-op challenge on crushing I was also pretty stoked.

Brütal Legend: Destroying Doviculus' minions with Superbeast by Rob Zombie blasting through my speakers was AMAZING. Just cruising around the landscape also proved to be quite memorable.

Killzone 2: Played it on hard the first time through. The final battle was really epic to me. Advancing slowly, creeping, sniping, popping of grenades. Tense!

Borderlands: Killing the Rakk hive by myself. I like really big bosses. :)

inFAMOUS: The Ending!

Spot on.

Also, DC rock show finale, TP bridge and just barely scraping through in under 3 mins

Batman AA.

The fighting system in this is the best i've ever experienced. Its got the quickness and intelligence of the Borne movies, the brutality of 300 while keeping everything esentially Batman.

An example to all on how a melee system should be implemented. I get far more joy watching combat in Batman: AA than any VFs, Tekkens, Soul Caliburs, DOA. Pure exhilaration.

Uncharted 2's Train and Jeep parts.
Demon's Soul all the boss battles (this game nails boss battles, while then gen fails at them.)
Infamous ending
Killzone 2's Anti aircraft artillery gun section
Battlefield Bad Company 2 beta.

Top Bottom
