Favorite N64 games NOT by Nintendo

My two big favorites would probably be Mischief Makers and Rayman 2.

Mischief Makers being first, of course. Truly a gem from Treasure.

Aside from the obvious answer, Doom 64. Amazing fucking game. The atmosphere, the sound, and music were practically unmatched throughout the entire N64 lifespan.

Yeah I loved the tracks in that game so much, they were so well done.

Shadowgate 64: Trials of the Four Towers

It's my 2nd-favorite game for the N64 overall, regardless of publisher (behind only Mario 64), and my 9th-favorite game overall.
Such an absolutely amazing game.

As per title, what's your favorite N64 games not published by Nintendo (that means no Nintendo or Rare games)?
Want to share your memory?

Here a list I've compiled to help you remember (not meant to be exhaustive):

Doom 64
Top Gear Rally
World Driver Championship
Beetle Adventure Racing
Wetrix
Mace the dark age
Mischief Makers
Castlevania Legacy of darkness
Goemon's Great Adventure
ISS 2000
Rakugakids
Hybrid Heaven
Gauntlet Legends
Ogre Battle 64 (Published by Nintendo and Quest in Japan)
San Francisco Rush 2048
Hydro Thunder
Bomberman 64
Fighter Destiny 2
Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
007 The world is not enough
Turok 2
Rayman 2
Bust a Move 99
Glover
Duke Nukem Zero Hour
Wipeout 64
Spiderman
Tony Hawk
Shadowman
Rocket Robot on wheel
Space Station Silicon Valley
Resident Evil 2
Operation Winback
Harvest Moon 64

You know, at first I thought you were just making fun of the game. But I googled it and you were close. It was Rocket: Robot on Wheels, despite the fact that he only had one wheel. I remember renting this game and easily getting past walls you were not supposed to.

Sin & Punishment

Fuck you NoA.

Edit: Nice to see so much love for Beetle Adventure Racing! that title deserve it.

Edit 2: Well, S&P was "published" by Nintendo but is a fully Treasure game. In that case: Mystical Ninja and Mischief Makers, also Bangai-O.

I'd probably go with Beetle Adventure Racing. The tracks in that game were more like worlds. Some laps were like three minutes, and you couldn't possibly take every route on a single lap. Amazing game, and I still revisit Mount Mayhem every Christmas.

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is another amazing N64 title not by Nintendo. So is Bomberman 64. Those two would probably be my runners-up.

Jet Force Gemini isn't eligible for this contest since it's a Nintendo-published title even if Rare developed it.

The creepiest, most immersive and atmospheric game that the N64 had to offer. Just an amazing, blood chilling experience of a game like none other. Some of the folks who worked on in this game went on to work on another little game knows as Metroid Prime.

-Mischief Makers
-Rocket: Robot on Wheels
-Shadowgate 64
-Bomberman 64

I also quite love this game:

Had it as a kid, fun bowling game with some unique characters and lanes to bowl on. It's kinda hard to find these days though.

This is the best thread man.

Hybrid Heaven and fucking Fighter's Destiny in the same thread in 2014?

And love for Castlevania?
:D

Besides those, I really dug Mace the Dark Ages, Shadowman, Turok 2, NFL Quarterback Club, NBA Hangtime, MK Trilogy, Bomberman 64, Doom 64 (one of my all time favs!), Legend of the Mystical Ninja 64 (another, all time favorite!), Extreme G, Forsaken 64, Robotron 64, and of course the wrasslers - No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000 and Virtual Pro Wrestling 2.

This is my choice as well. I still own a mint complete copy of this game and I pull it out every so often and play it. Definitely one of the better Zelda clones.

I played it recently, its still great. I used to think the game was close to Zelda in terms of style, but I think now that it falls right in between Mario 64 and Oot in its feel and play style.

I'd like a re-release on a modern platform, and its sequel.

I also really like:

- Episode 1 Racer
- Snowboard Kids games
- 007 The World is Not Enough

Was a kid back then, but all I can remember is that Hybrid Heaven was alien/mutant wrestling and it was awesome.

Shadowman mentioned? Yeah, the game was definitely immersive. Great choice.

I like Turok 1/2, SF Rush 1/2/2049, Bomberman 64/Hero, Aidyn Chronicles, Doom 64, Shadowman, and Goemon's Great Adventure

But my top 5 would be

Beetle Adventure Racing
Shadowgate 64
Tetrisphere
Rocket Robot on Wheels
Ogre Battle 64

Mine is pretty much Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

Such an awesome game. Had a huge Star Wars-y feeling to it and the soundtrack was very well ported to the N64's sound chip.
I know I played this game to exhaustion, collecting all the Rebel Emblems and beating it on the highest difficulty level, without cheats even.

I also loved the debug menu you could access by pressing R+L+Z+all C-Buttons+Left on the D-Pad and then pushing Left-Right-Left on the analogue stick until you hear a beep each time.
Had to push the stick with my nose or chin because apparently developers at Lucas Arts had three hands for some reason.

I need to play this game again.

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness - I know the N64 Castlevania games are considered to be terrible, but at the time it came out this was one of my favorite game ever. I loved the game's atmosphere.

Beetle Adventure Racing - Loved exploring the levels and trying to find every secret passage and alternate route.

Harvest Moon 64 - This was my first exposure to the Harvest Moon series. My favorite memory of this game is seeing several of my friends who weren't big into gaming getting addicted to the game along with me.

Wcw/Nwo Revenge - Easily the best wrestling game of the generation excluding the Firepro games which I haven't played. No mercy was too slow in comparison.

ISS 64 - Whilst certainly not the best football game I have fond memories playing this with my cousins.

Mystical Ninja - Rented this game on a whim and absolutely loved it. It had such a bizarre atmosphere. Loved the different characters and finding secrets and upgrades.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron - Whilst not as great as the GameCube sequels, it was still an excellent game at the time.

Resident Evil 2 - Only played the OG PS1 version but easily the best 3rd party game on the N64.

Third party support really was abysmal on the N64. The worst of any Nintendo console. Thankfully it had the best first party games of that gen. So many stone cold classics that elevate the console to legendary status. The best example of quality over quantity.

How much money is Nintendo leaving on the table by not putting all these on the Wii U eshop? :/

I want to play some of these (again).

Not many great N64 games not made by Nintendo, but Mischief Makers is definitely one of them and probably my favorite!

Mischief Makers is a good one. Ogre Battle 64 as well.

Yeah agreed with both. I really enjoyed Mischief Makers.

I also have to give a nod to this one:

Rocket_Robot_on_Wheels_Cover.jpg

Which is a really underrated platformer on the console. It was also developed by Sucker Punch Productions, which developed Infamous and the Sly Cooper games.

Man, the N64 was so rad.

Also 'HSV' Adventure Racing is the Australian version of Beetle Adventure Racing. Same game, different cars. I later found out BAR was also released here, and ended up renting it one weekend thinking it was a sequel or something. ・_・

That explains why the announcer only says "Adventure Racing" when you start the game. I always found it odd they never said the full title. It was definitely my favorite racing game on the N64.

A lot of my faves were already mentioned but I'll add in Starcraft 64. Used to play that heaps split screen with a friend. Controls were decent considering the limitations and the graphics were OK. Only negative was the poor performance in large battles.

If I had to choose only one it'd have to be Ogre Battle 64, just spent way too much time playing and re-playing, such a fantastic game.

Gotta give props to Rogue Squadron though, loved replaying trying to get those gold medals for every level. You'd race through a level, thinking you nailed and it totally had the gold, then that damn silver medal would flash on the screen and you were off by like 2% accuracy or 1 enemy kill short...

Not sure why it's popular to shit on the N64, the games don't hold up as well as the SNES but at the time I loved games like Turok and Castlevania, even if they had some issues looking back.

The AKI wrestling games. World Tour, Revenge, WWF 2000 and No Mercy.

Some of the best local multiplayer ever created.

Also loved Rogue Squadron and Turok 2.

Ogre Battle 64, Harvest Moon 64, Beetle Adventure Racing, World Driver Championship, WWF No Mercy. Games I played just as much as anything by Nintendo or Rare.
