Favorite story in a video game

Uncharted 2 for me. It moved along at the perfect pace, is set in areas of the world that are extremely interesting, great characters, etc. The whole series is generally quite good in this regard, but the Among Thieves story is damn near perfect.

The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney original trilogy. They're separate games, but very much like episodes of a continuing and masterfully told story. Mystery, comedy and drama in equal measure. Effortlessly shifts between being utterly ridiculous and very serious and poignant. The third game is the best, but of all the individual stories/cases in the games I actually like case 4 from game 2 the most. Absolutely my favorite video game story ever.
I'm tempted to say this too, it's really good. The only thing I would pick over it is maybe something that tells a story in more of a "uniquely video game" way like Bloodborne, but Phoenix Wright probably wins.

Has to be Bloodborne. I soaked up The Paleblood Hunt and the many lore videos. Cosmic horror just scratches an itch and Bloodborne nails that aspect, as well as perfect intertwining between lore and mechanics.

Now please make a sci-fi game, Miyazaki-san.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

There's not 'much' story but what's there is awesome, and self-justifying the more I dug into it. There are little hints and reveals throughout, and if you're attentive enough you can solve the main mystery. The town itself is vaguely creepy, the stroyline makes sense even with all of the puzzles too, and the final reveal was so emotionally satisfying I happily made the small leap in logic to accept what was really going on. Compared to the rest of the series, they captured lightning in a bottle.
Advanced robots trying to replace the departed
is far more believable and affecting than
magic holodeck gas
,
a city built underneath London and fully populated without anyone noticing,
a giant sea lion fighting a giant robot for some reason
, and whatever happened in the 5th one (I haven't beaten the 6th yet).

I actually really liked the Ace Attorney crossover's story too. It got really dark but felt real and seriously creepy at times. The twist is still bizarre but it wasn't a huge part of the story if I recall correctly.

I kinda want to say Her Story too, though due to the way the story unfolds I'm not sure if its something replicatable for everyone.
I found out initially about the 'imaginary friend' in the attic no one talks about, then assumed multiple personality dissorder, and then started noticing I may actually be watching two different people talk, OR it could be mutliple personality dissorder anyways. If you get the clip of her talking about seeing her sister with the bloody mirror early on it may not have the same effect
.

Portal 2
God of War 1/2/3 (simple yet satisfying)
Phoenix Wright
MGS 1/2/3
The Walking Dead
Shadow of the Colossus

Those are some of the vg stories I enjoyed the most, almost forgot 999

There's a good reason Planescape: Torment is often considered the best, the level of detail put into the world, the backstories and resulting personalities of the cast (both those in your party, and out of it) and the vividness of the game's descriptions all work to bring the setting to life.

I'm not sure I would call it my favorite, but I truly adore the writing in Deadly Premonition. York's characterization is wonderful and his subsequent interaction with the townspeople of Greenvale is just highly entertaining all around. A lot of people try to claim that most of the game's humor is unintentional, but I don't think that's true at all.

Has to be Bloodborne. I soaked up The Paleblood Hunt and the many lore videos. Cosmic horror just scratches an itch and Bloodborne nails that aspect, as well as perfect intertwining between lore and mechanics.

I think the game's writing is perfect in how virtually every piece of text, dialogue and scenery accentuates the game's tone and theme. Any time you open up the inventory to read an item text it's like taking a shot of that special brand of Lovecraftian weird fiction.

Steins;Gate is probably the one that stuck with me the most.

Besides that (in no particular order):

Virtue's Last Reward
The Last of Us
Phoenix Wright 3
MGS3
Talos Principle

Still untouched as far as game stories are. So intricate and complex, with incredible historic lore and some very unique themes in the realm of gaming (Kaballah, wave theory, Freudian psychology). Wish we got RPGs with visionary storylines like this some more.

Huh, hard to say.

I guess I would probably put in no particular order:
Star Wars KOTOR 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Red Dead Redemption
Spec Ops: The Line
The Last of Us

I can't think of any others off the top of my head, but I'm certain there are others.

I'd go with The Last of Us or The Walking Dead Season One. Now I notice they are both surrogate Father/Daughter stories and I am neither of those in real life but they are the ones that come to mind.

Obviously The Last of Us.

But something less obvious I fell in love with, was Wolfenstein: The New Order. Loved the romance in that game, and I felt really attached to it. No idea why.

The Last of Us. Definitely very deep material that was handled with respect and sensitivity.

As for more hollywoodish story, Metal Gear Solid 1. Perfect set up, story, plot and characters and a solid message.

Can I say Sands of Time trilogy? The way everything wraps up and comes full circle in Two Thrones makes it my favorite video game love story and my favorite story. Some of Ubi's best work even if tonally Warrior Within was a misfire.

Obviously The Last of Us.

BJ and Anya's relationship in The New Order felt like a natural extension of Jackie and Jenny's in The Darkness.

Fire Emblem Radiant duology. They have pretty good stories on their own, but I really like the complexity in story, character development and overall world building you get when you put them together. And the 2 games were supposedly meant to be one giant game, so yeah.

I see people already mentioned Ghost Trick. Good.

The Last of Us
Xenoblade Chronicles
Firewatch (based solely on the dialogue and character interactions, the actual plot is just OK.)
Persona 4
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Edit: I would say the Witcher 3, because it does have great storytelling, but so much of the work was already done by Sapkowski that it's hard for me to credit the game itself with that. The best parts of the Witcher 3's story are the characters and they almost entirely Sapkowski's creations that the writing team of Witcher 3 simply had to adapt to video game form. If you had any love for the Witcher 3's story, please do read the books, almost all of them are translated into English and the writing is incredibly high caliber.

the easy answer would be Xenogears

But the fact that Tetsuya Takahashi couldn't tell the full 6 episodes is/forever will be, without a doubt, gaming's biggest tragic story.

First post nails it, but I also think Sonic 06 is a strong contender. I was fighting back tears when
Sonic died.

On a more serious note, as bored as I am of Undertale, I enjoyed how far it took all of its ideas to the point of having a bonus mode where you get to murder everyone and see how they react to you being the bad guy.

Probably Nier. Dark, complex, tragic and that complete ending is such a brilliant use of the video game medium as a story telling device.

Other great stories in games:
Mother 3
Deadly Premonition
Ghost Trick
The Last Of Us
The Longest Journey
Life is Strange
Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 & 3.
