Favorite upgrade ability in a game?

Game: Super Metroid
Upgrade: X-Ray scope

See, it's funny, but I HATED the X-ray Scope in Super Metroid. Felt totally cheap to me, and took away one of the things I loved about the original Metroid: not knowing about secrets until you actually tried every nook and cranny to see what you'd find.

I have a lot of favorites...

Naked Jehuty
Super Sonic
Phazon Suit in Metroid Prime

The Devil Trigger in the Devil May Cry series is probably my favorite, though. If that counts as an "upgrade", anyway.

Transformations are always fuckin' cool.

Yeah, I gotta go with the Hookshot. That thing is the best.

The Light Suit in Metroid Prime 2 was pretty awesome, too.

'Took away' implies that you're forced to use it. You're not.

Plus, you don't get it until like you're like 80% of the way through the game anyway.

This.

Zero Shift in Zone of the Enders 2

You have to understand that ZoE2 is already a fast game with a boost/dash move. When you unlock Zero Shift, you are basically untouchable to regular enemies to the point where they can barely react.

that shows it off well

also, any dash move in Zelda or jumping in the 2D games.

As far as usefulness goes, definitely the teleport-style abilities that let you move between save points or whatever. Like the Song of Soaring.

anything in a game that improves my defense. it can either reduce the amount of damage taken or reduce the chances you get hit. i always take armor/defense upgrades before offensive upgrades if given a choice.

When Link gets Dash in LttP.

Don't ask me why, but for some reason I thought of the awesome robot you could turn into in Michael Jackson's Moonwalker:

I'll tell you why you thought of that: Because it was FUCK AWESOME.

Any game where you can upgrade your speed/sprint/whatever. That is my favourite ability to put points into, speed > everything.

Spread Gun, Contra.

The pic doesn't come close to representing it, you're a force of nature with this fucking upgrade.

Weapon or attacks that does more damage. Every game that has this I always upgrade it first.

Being able to jump higher, particularly if it's an incremental upgrade like in Crackdown. It gradually opens up new areas to you the more you play, which just feels more tangibly rewarding than a set 'jump becomes super jump' upgrade. It was really entertaining to try and make those building-spanning jumps and fall JUST short.

I love the sneaking perks in the Modern Warfare games.

And pretty much every upgrade in Castlevania: SONT. I get giddy every time I see one of those, no matter how many times I play the game.

Zone of the Enders: Zero Shift

PSO:
-PvE:Grants
-PvP: Megid
-Priceless: Building up a character correctly and being able to clear everything including every other asshole force who thought Megid would work on me.

Diablo 2: Teleport <3. At the boss in under 30seconds :lol

You come closer than anybody else ITT, Chrange!

Jumping in Morrowind. By the end of the game you could jump over Balmora 4 times over. That was the real deal.

at the end of Resistance 2
When Hale is almost a Chimera and he gets those special Chimera powers
that was pretty crazy stuff right there.

I came to post this.

Nothing can come close in this thread. It's the ultimate power up.

At that point it didn't really add anything new though :lol

Even boosting your jump by a little generally didn't give you access to new areas in Morrowind, from what I recall anyway, it just shortened the time it took to get there :D

Double jump. It's simply a must.

Also, Naked Jehuty in Zone of the Enders 2 was a badass upgrade, once you can use it since the beginning in further playtroughs you realize how broken it is. It's almost a cheat code.

For some reason that was the hardest part in the game for me. I'm supposed to
be a god
but somehow got my ass kicked constantly.
