Favorite Water Areas in Games?

3 pages and no water palace? Used to hang out to listen to the music

Can't believe nobody's said Baldur's Gate Dark Aliiance yet. Unfortunately I'm actually unable to find any screens of water, but at least I remember all the games on that engine having awesome water, I think.

The sunken pirate ship was such a great area. It was the same ship the player traverses in the intro level that self destructs and crashes onto the Tallon IV's surface. Everything's in different orientations from before and there are more areas you get to access this time.

I had never made this connection! I just guessed it was a space pirate ship and that was all. Feel a bit stupid now....enjoyed the area though.

Mostly Nintendo areas are coming to mind right now. Isle Delfino (even though I wasn't big on Sunshine overall), Ancient Cistern in Skyward Sword, Lake Hylia in Twilight Princess....all of the Great Sea in Wind Waker. I remember both Mario Galaxy games having some great water levels, but can't remember any detailed example off the top of my head. Most recently, Tropical Freeze had a great water world.

Even though I kind of hate surfing in the Pokemon games because of the encounter rate, the Hoenn sea was one of the coolest areas in any region they've done, just because it was so vast and, combined with dive patches, you could really explore it for hours. And then, all the islands had a really unique and cool atmosphere. Having to dive to get into sootopolis and seeing the still light blue water, the wooden pathways in Pacifidlog. It was all just pretty cool.

Right game wrong area.:p

This is the right answer:

I do love Makna Forest, but I think I still prefer Eryth Sea as a "water area". xD

Sometimes it's easy to lose sight of the fact that polygon counts, sharp textures and high resolution is never a substitute for fantastic art and how what assets you have are used. I really need to play this game.

If you play it on the Wii, there are some definite graphical shortcomings, but the stellar art direction and area design MORE than make up for it. You'll still find yourself standing around, looking at the scenery quite often with the awesome music blasting in your ears. :) The best experience would be playing it on Dolphin, of course.

No GTA V? GTA V's water blew me away. From the depths you can go to the way it looks at certain times of day, weather. The underwater UFO.

The game looks great when playing it higher resolution. Recently restarted it on PC. Will try and grab a screenshot when I hit that part.

Forgot to insert image ><

Random google image does it no justice. I remember being very impressed by that part when I first got the game on PS2.

I can't understand. How did they do this on the Wii? Fucking Monolith be some kind of technical gods. I gotta get Xenoblade one of these days.

The screen i posted was a dolphin screenshot but what SoraanTribal said about the art direction still stands.Xenoblade is an incredibly beautiful game even if you play it on Wii.
Personally i played it on my 27" LCD (that i have for my retro consoles) using component cables and i thought it looked fantastic.Monolith definitely made a miracle by creating this game for the Wii.

Well yeah, obviously :P. I was thinking of things like minimal loadtimes, insane draw distance and a giant world. Dat world design is amazing too.

Half-Life 2's airboat section, Water Hazard. It felt like an action-packed arcade game with strong moments of atmosphere (and no quarters required to keep playing).
