Favourite hideouts/safe houses.

What are your favourite hiding places in games, GAF. It doesn't even have to something designated as a safe house in game, I have a preference for abandoned buildings, remind of my childhood when I would always explore empyrean buildings.

A favourite of mine is the bunker from Watch Dogs, really cool and I like he location.

I gotta love new serena in yakuza games. They alwaya seem to all gather up there after doing all their parts and chapters for the finale.
 
I really liked Sanctuary in Borderlands 2 and the safehouse in Wolfenstein: The New Order.

The Mansion in Assassins Creed 3 was really cool. Seeing all the settlements build up over the course of the game was a great idea, it's one thing I wish they kept from that game.
 
Yeah the Bunker in Watchdogs is pretty dope, but is has the same problem I have with almost all safehouses and hideouts: there's nothing special to do.

Why can't I sit down? Or interact with something, do something worthwhile? Most hideouts offer a place to save, change of wardrobe if you're lucky and sometimes a vendor of some kind.
GTAV tried more interactivity but even then it's pretty limited. Why can't I sit down on the chair on Franklin's balcony and enjoy the view?

I love a good hideout but give me a reason to actually go there, for christ's sake.
 
Secret bases in Pokemon Emerald were always sort of fun. They felt enclosed and isolated and were very customizable. Its like your very own little spot of heaven in Pokemon.

Caed Nua from Pillars of Eternity. Free rests with temporary stat perks, a bunch of shops for you to browse, bounty quests, free crafting ingredients, and an awesome 15-floor dungeon underneath. And if you upgrade it enough, you'll be swimming in gold.

The aforementioned Moscow safe house in Alpha Protocol is great, too. I also like the tower in Saints Row 3, you know the one.

Junes from Persona 4 Golden. Not in a "gameplay" sense, but it's the secret hideout of the cast- So many memories there, man. <3
 
Since I'm playing Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen again, I'll vote for Gran Soren, even though it might not technically qualify.

But god damn if coming back after a long night's travel isn't the most rewarding feeling.
 
The Dying Light outposts at night were always awesome. They really did feel like a little sliver of safety in an extremely hostile environment just one power surge away from being taken over by zombies.

Not to mention they are always the "light at the end of the tunnel" when running away from the super zombies.
 
Crescent Isle in Skies of Arcadia. There was just something so cool about turning a really bad thing (
Vyse being stranded
) into a home base. Just kind of sold me on the game's tone of "Well, make the best of what happens to you!"

Great choice. They did a great job of making the safe houses actually important to the gameplay. (Only place night-time super zolbies can't get to.)

The purple/ultraviolet visual design was flawless, too - when you get spotted at night and start sprinting like fuck, and in the dark distance you can see a glimmer of bright purple, which dips in and out of sight as you free run across the environment.

So great.
 

This is the epitome of a poor hideout. A superficial, empty shell with nothing to do, nothing to interact with except some soldiers and the shower. It's empty, boring to traverse, needlessly complex in layout and investing time and money to expand the base is not rewarding in any way. Not to mention the Motherbase in the actual game doesn't have helicopters flying by or other stuff happening like in this picture.

Why isn't there a vehicles platform? Where is the armory? The infirmary? Rest areas? Or brig for that matter? There's nothing.

Ah the Nexus.

Freaking Yurt! Thought it was safe until he starts killing NPCs lol. Took me a while to figure it out.

Your post just reminded me that Assassin's Creed: Syndicate has one of the best safehouses i can remember.

1. It's on a train. It moves. It's like if your GTA safehouse was on a monorail train - you can actually stand at the window and watch the incredible city go by (it's on a long loop) and like Uncharted 2's train level you can clamber all around it - including onto the roof of the carriages, so you can jump to specific places off the line you want to get to.

2. There are 2-3 key quest givers on the train, who are almost always on the train. As such you need to go back of your own volition to actually progress the story and improve your income (sidequests).

3. Your important 'Gang upgrade' tree is accessed on the train, so to buy upgrades that improve the open world and dynamic events you need to go back and manage the train menus. Sort of like Mother Base but it actually impacts the open world and resources directly. On top of that, your 'Income Safe' is on the train - the thing which fills with money every half hour. So whenever you need an extra bit of cash for some gear, you go back.

It's perfectly useful but also perfectly important to the gameplay - while being a beautiful and nice thing in and of itself.

Such a well-designed game on the whole. All the scattered, nebulous elements of previous AC games suddenly came together.

That's a good one. I love the gameplay function of actually bringing people back to it, getting sidequests in it, and also picking up survival items in it.

I love Dead Rising's structural design on the whole.
