Features that sounded bad on paper, but were great in execution

For me Kinect was a great idea executed decently well. It didn't reach the level it initially set out (or has yet to anyway), but it wasn't the absolute failure it could have been either.

I reserve judgment on Kinect, but the release of this title will tell me a lot.

Superguide. Opened up accessibility while allowing games to retain a satisfying level of challenge.

This. Part of it still makes me a bit uncomfortable in principle (I'd like the option to never have it offered to you; seeing it there... taunts me) but there's no denying that we've had two games now that use and have offered a level of challenge somewhat above that which I'd seen in recent years, yet were still reasonably successful.

A racing game in a taxi cab with open roads.

Zombies vs plants, not in that order.

A Dragon Quest mech battle game.

Tetris as a sphere.

Shmup that is actually a two player verse game like. Good ole Twinkle Star Sprites, I wish I could have played you in the arcades.
