Fellow GAFfer Davcak was fired from Reddit for having Leukemia...

Man I feel so bad for your Dacvak. Hang in there man.

And for those doubting this story or saying "Let's hear the other side of the story". I'd believe Dacvak over Reddit. People are saying Reddit was very generous, but that was the old guard. The company as it is now is completely different. Ellen Pao showed her character when she lied to his face and told him he could come back if he got the okay from a doctor, which he did.

My heart sank reading that post.

I think reddit was very generous to him-and to fire him after speaking with him when he's ready to return to work is not only strange but shitty.

People saying they were generous for giving 1 year of Cobra. That's a way to prevent him from suing. It would be far cheaper for them to do that (With the chance of him being cancer free as well) than being sued.

Wow that's really horrible. Can soemone explain what COBRA is and why one year of it is considered good?

So wait, they paid him for two years while he was sick, and then gave him an extra year of medical coverage when they let him go?

Why are they the assholes here?

Sounds like they went above and beyond what just about any other company would have done.

Exactly. It sounds like everyone whining in this thread has not worked a white collar job and has an unrealistic expectation of the relationship between employees and a large corporation. Even the thread title stinks of bias.

That said, I hope the guy gets well soon.

Man, screw you guys with your "Chairman Pao" shit, the reason she is gonna walk away from this winning is because she is gonna argue that this exclusively about racism.

i don't know, she doesn't have a good record when claiming discrimination

I'm going to interpret what he is saying as "He's asking why people would do that just to give her a pedestal to stand on that she shouldn't have."

She already is known to have some shady practices and apparently bad ethics.

But that's just it. It's not a standard office job. It's a job as a community manager. Reddit's bread and butter is its community, stories like this damage their core-business hard. Pao should be doing everything to keep the community happy, but this is the latest of several stories pissing of her community. And without its community, there's no website, no business, no money to be made.

So yes, I can see why she needs to let the guy go, but she, of all people, can't handle it this sloppy.

I still don't know what reddit is, so I'm confused about why there's such a big controversy other than Davcak situation.

Can someone inform me?

Its one of the top 10 visited websites on the Internet, essentially the front page of the Internet for millions of users. It gets over 7 billion page views and 150m unique viewers a month, that's larger than all TV networks combined. For a long, long time it was a user driven website where people formed little groups (subreddits) focused around specific topics and it ranges from the high (science, history, math, cities, politics) to the low (extreme fetishes, trolls, racism, misogyny, etc) and the front page was a mish mash of the groups you subscribed to (90% of users were defaulted to a popular set). There are thousands and thousands of subreddits, each similar to a topic thread on neogaf with some having millions of viewers and contributors.

In the last few months a new management has taken over and seems to want to get rid of anything controversial or that could be seen as anti-corporate, but they have executed in odd ways. Obvious inflammatory subs have been banned, but others that mimic the same behaviours that were considered ban-worthy are left alone.

The thousands of volunteer mods who curate the various sub-reddits are left with broken tools for years and no communication from the reddit administration staff and finally yesterday the person they considered their "champion" inside the reddit staff was fired with no warning or reason or replacement plans, the proverbial straw that broke the camels back.

i was goofing over the fact she's 0-2 i that aspect.

i do adhere to the idea that the whole "cunt, mao, hitler imagery" only adds more bullet points in her favor to overlook her screwups.

Wow, thanks for that!

I'm quite embarrassed that I didn't had knowledge regarding a site that was so popular.

American law perspective on health care is despicable from top to bottom. Tying being allowed to live to your ability to work is gross. If you aren't rich, your life is over. I hope Davcak seeks outside help. Good luck sir.

Cobra is an interim health insurance when you are terminated from one job and need to find another. Basically it means you will still be covered during the interim.

It's a like for like health insurance plan, so you don't lose any benefits that you had from your old company.

Usually it's on the ex-employee to keep cobra active and pay the premiums. In this case Reddit is covering it.

Regan signed it in. Somewhat surprisingly. However, not many people actually use it. If you are fired the last thing you want to do is spend more money on insurance premiums if you don't need it.

COBRA is health insurance coverage past job termination that's guaranteed access to for up to 18 months. Your job has to allow you to be able to stay on their health plan for that time. The thing is premiums for these plans can be very expensive depending on the coverage, size of the company, etc.

For example the COBRA coverage I was offered when I left my job at an orchestra was about 1700/mo. (Extremely good PPO) (I was going on my wife's work plan).

Excuse me, why are we shitting on reddit? From the four years he worked there he was almost one and a half on leave, during which he was not only kept payed, but reddit actively helped him to find a donour anx kept his ppsition safe. This sounds a tually pretty reasonable, especially for the USA.

The whole (pre-Pao) point of Reddit is to be better, and sorry for your luck with those companies. And that doesn't address Pao's flip flopping on the doctor's note, hopefully that counts as a verbal agreement in court if it even goes that far for Dacvak

That's the part that really stood out to me and I was wondering where the post was leading. The first though I had was "wouldn't this be grounds for a wrongful termination suit?" Especially if he can prove that she lied about the agreement, etc?

As for COBRA I thought you were entitled to that for a time because you're paying into it while working. Part of your check goes toward it? If that's the case it's not like they were doing him any big favors on that end.

That's not how it works. You are only entitled to access.

You have the opportunity to pay for Cobra. It's usually quite expensive. Reddit is paying for a year of it, usually when you lose your job you have to cover it yourself.

Ellen Pao honestly sounds like a total biotch.

From her wiki page, it sounds like she has all the credentials to run a business, but evidently it seems like not even an MBA from Harvard will guarantee that you would be a good CEO.

Just because she's fucking up (and possibly corrupt) doesn't mean the Chairman Pao stuff isn't driven by racism.

For sure. Those insults wouldn't be said if it wasn't for a racist meaning. Those people are unfortunately hurting the people actually trying to point out her poor actions. Not surprised though, since Reddit has a lot of racism in several subreddits.

Glad I'm not the only one.

He got the job then was sick, then he was ready to move and got sick again all the while his position was kept open and fully paid. He got well again but whose to say it wouldn't relapse again and again he be off for another year with full pay.

It's disingenuous to say he was fired just because he was sick, it made it sound like they found out about his illness and then fired him for it, I feel for the guy and hope he is well but we are only hearing one side of the story and is only now coming out because of the shitstorm surrounding Reddit just to put the boot in.

It's weird people are super angry about this.

If I was unable to work for more than a year, I would be absolutely shocked if my company kept paying me a salary for any portion of that time that wasn't covered by sick days -- and a whole year's salary? And he was still 2 to 3 months away from being able to work when he was let go.

If people are mad at this they should be way more mad at every other company in the USA, because Reddit's sick policy seems like it's one of the best in the entire country to go as far as it did.

Saying shit is not as bad as other levels of shit doesn't make the original shit any less non-shitty.

Health care in America, pardon the word, is literally cancerous. The way it's linked to jobs and it's an opt-in service is remarkably Bronze Age when looking at any other developed nation.

Racism and sexism.

From everything I've read, she seems like she is a ruthless business woman. Brilliant, too.

That being said, even though she's.. heartless, I suppose, I haven't even seen an ounce of the same hate for her equally heartless husband.

I mean, people dislike women in power as it is, but when you throw in her being Asian American and doing things people dislike... wooooooo boy. She didn't stay in her place. Bad Asian American. Shoulda been quiet and submissive and left all the managing to a nice white boy to.

Because that worked out really well for America.

Giant raging deleterious assholes (Short sighted corporate hatchetmen) come in all shapes and colours. Sometimes they're asian american women too.

Also her husband is shit but isn't in control of one of the most public community discussion services in the world.

Seems to be chaos over there at the moment. No idea what is going on.

I mainly use the website for the NBA subreddit, so luckily I have not been affected by any of this.

That's horrible and all of this is getting out of hand but I'm sure his number 1 priority is getting better right now (unless he already is which would be great).

Wish you the best of luck Davcak.

Business degrees have pretty much no correlation to someone's aptitude as a businessperson.

Wow, thanks for that!

I'm quite embarrassed that I didn't had knowledge regarding a site that was so popular.

It's not only just popular but there is a great interest by many companies in reddit. Someone I know that works in the IT department at a very large news agency told me around 1-2 years ago that if a news article of theirs would hit frontpage they'd be seeing ~300k page views just for that article the couple of hours it is on frontpage. You don't get that sort of page views from any where else on an article from a single source. Before reddit's time, slashdot used to do that but would be in a couple of thousands only.

Many places also use subreddits as a direct, official source of communication such as specific subreddits for games where developers interact on and not to mention that even cities and their districts have dedicated subreddits where I believe people that represent a politician or whatever can interact with the community. This is why reddit admins were in such a flurry to get the subreddits back online.

That's the thing with reddit, it's a useful shit hole most of the time. However it has really genuine good subreddits and communities with unique content that you can't really get elsewhere. That's how I use my reddit experience, I never see the general reddit, only the niche subreddits I am subscribed to like /r/gamedev, /r/astronomy, /r/astrophotography and cool game specific subreddits like /r/kerbalspaceprogram and /r/eve. Even fun interesting subreddits for discovering great unheard of new music like /r/listentothis is really valuable subreddits and they don't tend to inhibit the "reddit culture". Reddit got so big that subreddits become completely detached and isolated from the rest of the site if they want which is great of niche subreddits.

What? I've seen countless posts on reddit of people exposing and mocking that guy.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's true, I mean they kicked out one of their most famous and hardworking community manager for not moving to SF.

Nonsense. Medical leave is a known factor - you have your leave policy, and you have Fmla leave, and companies follow those and there is zero fear of lawsuits. In this case they went so far beyond the legal requirements that claiming they had any fear of lawsuits is ridiculous.

Deleted it himself apparently. I'd assume to avoid legal repercussions, though it seems a bit late for that now.

And probably out of concern for his future employment opportunities.
Ellen could've handled the situation more tactfully. But the way davack handled this
isn't going to help him with finding a new job in the same/similar field.

If being open and honest closes doors for people, then they weren't doors worth walking into.

In general, discussing your past job like this is a bad idea. You don't want to give potential employers any reason to lay a strike on you, because if they do, you're pretty much toast.

Sorry to hear about everything Dacvak and I hope you land on your feet soon!

Pao sounds like a despicable human being.

Here comes the Defense Force. First of all, what have you been reading, since I have seen nothing to suggest that she is brilliant. Second of all, people are hating on her because she sounds like a horrible person. Plus, she's one of those people who falsely accuse I others of discrimination based on race/gender for money, which means people who are discriminated against have this thrown up into their faces.
