Female Cop Fired for Using Racial Slur on Snapchat

Clicked on the thread to make sure the cop wasn't my cousin. She's a cop in a major Midwestern city and this kind of behavior wouldn't be out of the question for her.

I wonder what that says about police culture in this country.

Even without the use of the N-word, the selfie with the caption "I'm the law today" is dumb enough alone. I don't know what the various law enforcements policies on posting to social media while working/in uniform but at my job (not a cop), you get fired for that.

.

i was gonna say something about that quote, but it's an old article so it's not worth it. i'm so confused about the word nigga now. I go out with some Filipino friends and they say the word, i hear a couple of white people say it on my way from work, white Hispanics are saying it. it catches me by surprise every time. since when was this ok?

You live in Miami?

Seems to just depend on social circles and different communities in different living areas. I mean I hardly hear it in the UK. Pretty much never. No spelling or pronunciation of it.

A lot of Americas black community seem to use the -ga pronunciation. I mean personally I think there are much better words in the languages to use, but I'm not really interested in policing what people want to do. Well up to the point of differentiating intent is important, and largely if I feel it's harmless I'll just ignore it than get outraged. It in many regards it is just a word, but yes, a word with one hell of a "bloody" past.

As much as words are words it doesn't take much effort as a human being to go out of your way to take some importance from history. Being liberal and for free speech is great, like I am, but I also understand I live on this planet with 7 billion people and it does very little in my day to day life to ignore the use of some of the English language if it simply means better community cohesion and respect in public. Other times I'm more than happy to consume comedy or "artistic" work where language is a bit more free. Difference there though is I'm using my brain as an adult to decipher intent and if it's adult content to be consumed by adults I can't hold too much respect for the constant "think of the children!" screaming. As I've rattled on about recently in a porn topic on GAF education is key for younger generations.

Do I think me being white plays a part in it as well? Eh, kinda. I mean I didn't choose my skin colour, or gender, but I can choose as I said above to be compassionate and caring for the wider human race and being reserved over the use of language with a terrible past is hardly an issue for me. It shouldn't really be for anyone. As I also said artistic freedom can exist within the confines of media/writing. The point of that is it's something you go looking for to consume, it's not every day life being on public transport and screaming to your friend(s)/partners and using certain types of language. When you start "forcing" other members of the general public, in public, to listen to your mouth it's a bit more messy than a comedy DVD sitting on a shelve in Walmart that doesn't get heard/watched unless YOU buy it.

Hi can people be so stupid? I just don't get it lol. Social Media is exposing fools everyday.

I wouldn't consider the term by itself to be a racial slur given how some people use it. That she believed it would be appropriate to post a picture using that term while in uniform especially given current events is what makes me have no sympathy for her whether she's racist or not.

"I'm not a racist." I just do racist things.

Good on them for giving her the boot, but shit, you get fired for racial slur but somehow its still ok to outright kill people with intent and go free with a badge.

You would think that police officers would be more aware and focused on the situation between the police and the citizenry. And in particular, citizens of color.

Stuff like this should be obvious not to do.
Even if you are full on blue lives matter, you should be aware enough to know that you shouldn't make casual racist remarks just for the sake of job security.

There's pretty much no gray area with racist commentary.

Police shootings are a bit more complex.
Unfortunate, though.

her fault...she should known how scandalous other women are. She could of got away with sending that that to a black male friends. Women will use anything against other women if they don't have their way. That's why so many women don't get a long with other women.

Racist piece of shit. Glad she got canned and hopefully will never find work in law enforcement again.

but if you knew her you'd know she's not racist! She says so!

How goddamn STUPID do you have to be to send that Snapchat with the current climate in the US with police and race?

Firing... I dunno. After seeing the details. Probably sensitivity training, leave without pay for a few weeks. Gaf will probably want to burn me alive for saying that though.

Right. She was on probationary status and took a picture of herself in uniform saying I'm the law N**** and you think she shouldn't be fired? And it got out for people to see including Black people.

What job do you work at where that wouldn't end at termination let alone being a police officer doing it?

By itself this isn't a fireable offense in my book. There is no indication of a troubled history as an officer. Considering the paid vacations cops shouldn't but still get for murdering citizens this reeks of internal politics nonsense and not a genuine move to improve community relations.

So, eh, doesn't matter because worse things happen.

STOP USING THE WORD ASSHOLES!

Also yuck at the bolded. Like you threw that in there to shame people for caring about this.

Yeah this post isn't sexist Nope. Not even a little. They also get emotional on periods. Yuck!

Much easier to prove one over the other

Probationary period. That's the ONLY reason. Has nothing to do with proof. There are videos of some of these murders and the cops still get off with a slap on the wrist at most.

There should be a box to check off right beside the post button that adds an asterisk to any reply. This would tell other posters if that person has actually clicked the link and read the entire article, or just scanned the bold.

Nah. Don't say nigga. Especially don't say it if you're a cop. Not hard.

Non-blacks saying nigga is ok because intent matters defense force, ASSEMBLE!!

Nobody has said this, don't strawman.
Except you.
Doesn't feel like she was trying to offend anyone, she was just being an idiot.

Not to say she's not racist to a point, but I think her intention here is important.

Kinda funny how she gets the sack but police who kill unarmed black men get paid administrative leave. And by funny I mean sad.

I'm speaking based on my own personal outlook on how the word can be used. I feel that re-appropriating
nigger
as nigga was a good first step in diluting the power of that word against us but I feel at some point if the word is going to lose even more power it has to be accepted that anyone can use it as long as it's understood as a term of endearment (in a rougher down to earth tone). For now most black people don't see this the way I do so I'm an outlier.

You think a police officer in this climate is using it as a term of endearment in this case "I'm the law"?

Can somebody tell me if he's joking?

So many things wrong here, but I'll go with: You do know that she thinks it was a male cop that posted her dirty laundry, right?

Edit: I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Purely for some perspective. Where did I say that it was ok that she said the N word?

Do you struggle with reading comprehension?
You're the only one bringing up intentions as if they're important in such a case and also mind-reading her to conclude that she probably didn't mean to offend (whoever does when they get caught?). Your post implies you're not ok with her getting fired when you're not explicit about these kind of things, so sorry about the assumption. Also, bringing up whataboutism and saying it's sad she got fired while cops who murder black people aren't doesn't help.

Read his post history. He wasn't joking.

Fair enough. You are definitely coming from a perspective that I can't. I think though that it offends far more people than will ever see things your way even if you see it as ideal. Like not just offend, but makes them feel a way I can't even imagine. Like less than a person. That's why I will never use it.

I probably slipped the same caption if I got the job as a nypd just because thw word is part of my vocabulary. Everyone i know uses thw word . in NYC that word is used by everyone even some of my white friends. Walking to work I see 10 year Olds using the term nigga here like "nigga what time is it ?" Or etc etc.

In NYC ppl don't use that word in a racist way. I remember me and my gf went to Indiana and the "nigga" word came out a few times. And our host was like OMG we can't say words like that here. Indiana is not like nyc where you could freely say the word.

Well Ithe has to do with nyc and it's diversity.

Now back on topic. I'm sure where she was hired they don't tolerate thst word and it snot widely used as in nyc. And you have to show professionalism being a cop and using that term is definitely not doing that.

She called the photo “a stupid mistake” — and insisted she’s not a racist.

“Everyone that knows me knows I don’t have a racist bone in my body,” she said.

but, you are racist for saying a racist thing.

dipshit

You think a police officer in this climate is using it as a term of endearment in this case "I'm the law"?

No I actually think she was trying to act hard but I prefer to seeing additional indicators of racist behavior. Studies indicate 60% of the cops are racist to large degrees but you can't say just from this she wasn't being simply an idiot.
