this was something I learned in the old days of counterstrike voip
if you acknowledge the harasser, it empowers them, and there is very little you can do to deter them if you aren't in a position of power.
which is why twitter harassment is such an issue, the people in power that can change it do not have the current capacity to remove the harassers. The best we can do right now is just ignore it.
edit: you could say that twitter is a 500 million man server with 500 or so admins (numbers speculative).

Like, yeah it's possible he was serious, GG tends to be crazy, but still, his comments certainly seemed like sarcasm to me instead of the typical bullshit. That said, you still should be careful with what you say if you aren't well known - context is pretty important.

Ignoring the trolls was what allowed gamergate to grow into the monster that it is. We're at the stage where we have no choice but to invoke higher powers, which is why you see Anita speaking to the UN, the US congress and tech companies.

It is kind of crazy how powerful harassment is and how there's no real response to it. Engagement is a losing strategy, but ignoring it doesn't actually help stop it either. Ignoring just reduces the pleasure of the harasser, it doesn't eliminate it. And meanwhile you're still reacting internally and having to deal with the cumulative weight of it all.
trolling is like when you make not so obvious bait posts or intentionally try to rile somebody up over a topic that you don't actually care about but you know they're passionate about. \
Sending a picture of your penis and/or ejaculate on a photo of the recipient is a bit beyond trolling IMHO.

There are a lot of lonely guys out there who were rejected, or ignored completely (and quite likely because of their own abhorrent personalities), that conjure a reality where this occurs because they are "gamers" or "nerd" and not because of their own flaws.
The fact that a great deal of women play games and are "nerds" or "gamers" as well conflicts with this conjured reality, as it highlights the reason they are alone is not because women think gaming is lame, but because the guys themselves are assholes/deeply flawed characters.

Stuff like this happens when someone goes against the status quo . You going to harassed until you stop talking about it. The issue is the harassers have no need to stop, especially if it anonymous angry. They will face no real penalties and bunch of other people will continue to back each other furthering their own actions.
How I see it social media sites or government officials must step in reduce the amount of chronic harassment so people like Anita will have a voice without having to fear for her life.

I would actually contest even the bolded (!), by the very definition of misogynists. I'm going to hazard a guess that most of the morons that get their kicks out of this shit have never had any meaningful relationship (romantic or friendship) with any gamer girl, so for all they care they may as well not exist; therefore they claim they actually don't exist. That relieves them from a whole plethora of unconfortable and stressing (for them) scenarios, like actually engaging them in conversation, treating them like actual people, and so on. A human mind's inertia is a terrible thing.
There is, indeed, probably a less extreme, semi-functional gator profile that actually has female friends, but this is probably rarer simply out of the sheer cognitive dissonance between treating them like human beings and treating female characters as virtual inflatable dolls and feminists like dartboards. But the power of the human mind to find peace even in the midst of the most preposterous of contradictions never ceases to surprise me, so they might actually be quite numerous.

Even if there were enforced RealIDs on the internet, this wouldn't stop. For example, if you made gay hate speech a crime, it'd still be coming from places that don't consider it wrong or a crime. So I'd question the trade off that such a change (if even possible) would provide.

I hate to be "that guy" (and i'm not even a guy), but this really has nothing to with gaming, and should be in the OT. Her work is gaming-related, sure, and the harassment she receives is despicable, but that doesn't mean everything she tweets is worthy of a thread.

Which is my main criticism of Anita: she's fighting an honorable battle - although I'm unsure how radical she is. But she should focus on children and adopt a tactic of outliving the prejudice.
Children are not born racist, homophobic or misogynist. They are taught that. Employ a strong counter to that at the school level and watch kids get the support they need to fight off their biased parents. With time, the bias starts to wither and die, left without a steady supply of blind supporters who couldn't know any better.
Used to jump online with my girlfriend's account on 360 pretty often since I was lazy and only paid for the year 360 sub on her account. Her screen name obviously denotes the player being a girl and I got some fuuuuuucked up messages when I used to play on her account in multiplayer games. Not fun times. Thing is she literally talks about how "sex sells" is a bad excuse and what it really means is that sexism sells and this is harmful to society and is something we shouldn't put up with. Not exactly hard to see where those people are coming from when she makes a video shaming DOA and ripping into the term sex sells. Just go watch the last video on her channel, I mean it's all there in a 6 minute video or whatever.
The problem with why men specifically are upset is that she is always ripping into the straight male focused stuff. She never uses fan service aimed at women as examples in any of her criticisms which paints her entire argument in a biased light. Pretty easy to see why boys find her annoying if you actually take a moment and watch her video game videos.

People that are against woman playing games or getting into the industry are a small minority (brand me as one if it suits you, something I certanly am not),you can drag this until eternity by pulling what suits your angle.
Some of the best professionals and people involved in this industry are woman, some of my favorites as well. This should be handled in a way more mature way, giving attention to those who dont deserve is pointless(your cue).

I get the feeling that some disgusting asshole who goes through the process of filming themselves jacking off to her picture and sending it to her don't live relatively normal lives. That's some real fucked up shit and sad that someone would ever have to even deal with that in their life, and all because they have a differing opinion and is vocal about it.
Just because it's 'NotAllMen' (thanks Captain Obvious) doesn't mean that the minority who are being bell ends should be ignored, and that the people suffering the abuse don't matter, or they should just put up with it for some reason.
I don't understand why you'd need that explained. Or how you could try and paint yourself as a victim in some way "I'm being generalised and made to look bad!".
I do wonder if you'd have the same approach if it was your partner, your sister or your own daughter for example, who was on the receiving end.
