FF4a help: How do I defeat Dark Bahamut (final dungeon)?

The FAQs (which were written for the SNES version) just say to cast reflect on party members. But while I'm doing this, the boss just casts reflect on himself and then continually casts flare on himself, reflecting it onto my party members and preventing me from getting a foothold in the battle (the effects of my reflect spells are wasted by the boss casting flare on himself instead of my party). I tried casting dispel on the boss to remove his reflect effect, but that just bounces off. Any tips? Avg. party level is 53.

... cast dispel on yourself. It'll reflect off and hit him. :D

btw, level 53 is pretty low for the lunar ruins dungeon. O_o

Or simply cast you spells on yourself when you are on reflect. In FF, spells are almost never blocked if they are reflected.

There should be some sort of whipping system for people who contain spoilers in thread titles.

Dude, it's not the last boss or anything. Just a random monster guarding a treasure, the name of which I didn't reveal. But sorry for ruining your life.

Thanks everyone else for the help. The casting dispel on self bit is a good tip.

I think the OP is talking about Dark Bahamut/Wyvern (the red Bahamut) in the last place, Gaime.

If you are, don't bother casting Reflect on your party. Dark Bahamut always starts out using Mega Flare, so heal/revive your party ASAP (hopefully Rydia is alive and can cast Asura and you get the effect you really need). Just attack it or throw stuff at the guy. Don't bother playing magic warfare and don't use summons back at it (it counters with Mega Flare, at least if you use Bahamut against it).

At level 53 he shouldn't be too tough. Do you have any Protect Rings? If you have 2, try having one on Rosa and another on Edge (if you are going to throw stuff) or Cecil (if you aren't going to throw stuff). Sometimes you can get lucky if you have Cain use Jump and Dark Bahamut targets him in the air with his Flare spell and no one gets hit. Eventually Dark Bahamut's Reflect will wear off and he may hit himself with Flare before casting Reflect again.

If you get a rhythm going, Rosa should be able to keep up with the castings of Flare with a Cure3 or Cure4 spell on a single party member, or Cure4 on everyone to keep your HP up.

Ribbons can help too, but it is a bit easier to get those after you beat this guy.

Thanks. I think you're on target with the boss I mean, although there's no mention of wyvern. He is red. I've already gotten the two ribbons and two protect rings. I don't have either Bahamut or Asura though - are these summons that I would have gotten from a side quest?

You can find Bahamut on the Moon and Asura can be found in the Summoner's Town in the underground world.

And the best Strategy is to just pound him as hard and as fast as possible with physical attacks. Any odd magic tactics usually back fire against him. I recall having Kain jump just before a Mega Flare and avoiding it but it's been awhile since I played the game.

Thanks! You were right, I was overthinking it with the reflect business. Beat him with simple attacks and heal spells from Rosa. Wasn't too difficult once I dumbed it down.

What Shouta said about Asura and Bahamut.

When only the Super Famicom/NES versions of the game were out, the monster you were stuck on was called 'Dark Bahamut' in the Japanese versions, but renamed to 'Wyvern' in the US version.

Go, go Ragnarok!
