Because I think I could accept them messing up FFVII. They already have tried stripping out all the charm of it with Advent Children, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, etc. Playing through the game again, it's weird seeing that the cast aren't (especially Cloud) emo douchebag whiners. All of that came from the expanded fiction, that IMO, missed the damn point.
I agree. Advent Children made the continuation of FF VII into just another anime.

It didn't even look better than The Spirits Within for most scenes!

This again ?

Hey, Square-Enix. How about before you start remaking FFVII you gives us a DS remake of FFV and FFVI first. Hm? Maybe PSP with high-quality sprites of FFI and FFII. How about that?

Keep dreaming, brother. I'm going to agree with soco on this one though: If they ever did decide to do this, GAF and all VII's fans would rant endlessly about the changes they'd make to it.
After purchasing a copy and telling all their friends about it.

No. The shit-storm would hit long before any purchases were made. This would be one of the most aggressively investigated piece of gaming journalism in history: We would be hearing about this fucking thing for years before it came out. Any changes would be documented in vast detail.

Why, oh why can't Toriyama and Kitase close their mouths? Do they have a lot of free time? I thought 3rd Birthday still needs to be made and Versus XIII still needs to come out. It's like Wada didn't give them anything else besides XIII to do.

...On second thought, that might be a good thing.

FFXIII-2, FFVIIr... make up your mind!

I really want a FFVII remake, but I don't know if I can trust S-E to do it properly. So much crap has been retconned into the storyline, forcing huge modifications that may very well do more harm than good to our beloved FFVII.

Why do they think it would be so hard to remake FFVII? Do I just expect to little from a remake? If I was going to remake the game I don't think I would feel overwhelmed. Every thing in the game is done. All they have to do is bring the graphics into this generation.

  • Redo all the cut scenes with Advent children quality video.
  • Add voice acting to all the cut scenes.
  • Do the voice acting twice and choose the best actor for each part.
  • Redo all the character models up to FF13 standards.
  • Recreate all the painted backgrounds into 3D.
  • Redo all the enemy models up to FF13 standards.
  • Redo the over world and recreate the over world models.
  • Leave the battle system the f alone but add skips to the summons.
  • Job Done

What's so damn overwhelming about that list? It's a list. Do they think they have to reinvent the whole thing?

I think the problem is that they wouldn't be able to keep themselves from monkeying with the game. For example the one thing I would think they would absolutely change is the over world. If I was going to redo it I would make the over world like Gran Pulse. Where you could see all the enemies walking around and you could walk around in the middle of em. I would still leave the random encounters in the rest of the game though. They wouldn't be able to stop there though and I think that's the problem.

Lets see, what would Square do to this game and what would it change?

  • Remove the crossdressing scene
  • Change the script since there's *gasp* swear words.
  • Change Cloud from the asshole in the first game to the emo git Square portrays him as now a days.
  • Stick Genesis somewhere,
  • Add a lot of Crisis Core elements to the story.
  • Shitty voice acting like always.
  • Make it more anime styled and add a lot more fanservice.

I don't think they change in battle system and upgraded graphics and sound would be a bad thing if done right. I didn't say "No HD towns" since I'm not sure that would be the case. But anyway, if you think you'll get the same FF7 you loved but updated with no actual changes to the plot, characters, theme and what not. You sir, are deluding yourself.

This game does need remaking because the story needs reworking to make it coherent, make the battle system less mundane too and don't change the OST.

They can add Genesis and any other bullshit from the compilation into the remake for all I care. There is only ONE reason why I would not be hyped for the game and that's if they changed the battle system. They can add stuff to it like they did with the FF4 remake but it better not resemble a post FFIX battle system or I will go crazy.
That's stupid. FF7's battle system isn't particularly fun. The ability system (materia) ain't bad, but the actual battle system is basically FF4 plus limit breaks. I'd like to see the same ability system, but with FFX-2's ATB 2.0 for added speed.

It's all because of that fucking tech demo - I guarantee that if they never released it, the ridiculous idea of a VII remake would never have gotten into anyone's head. It's not like the fanbase collectively thought "you know what, we think VII needs a remake for PS3". SE brought it on themselves.

Having never played FFVII to completion, and having only played it recently, I can't say I am excited. I don't really see why people would want this over, say, a HD 2D-sprite remake of FFVI. I imagine in the end the costs would be similar and from my (limited) experience VI seems to be the better RPG. I think at this point people want it just because it seems like they should want it.

I remember the Sony conference like it was yesterday......

Wada comes on the stage, busts out the FFVII tech demo.

People jizz in their pants, the world becomes a peaceful prosperous place. No wars, no poverty, no bullshit.

Then Wada says they have no plans to remake FFVII.

The world reverts back to a chasm of misery.

Wouldn't 6 be a closer comparison to 7 than 4 in terms of battle system?

Maybe journalists should stop asking them that fucking question. Toyirama did nothing wrong here. He was asked a question, he answered and people act like he is baiting them or some bullshit.

Apart from some minor stuff like desperation attacks/limit breaks/trance, the battle system remains essentially unchanged from FF4 through FF9. The ability systems are what changed. FF6 is somewhat more similar to FF7 in that normal fight commands don't pause the ATB briefly like they do in FF4 and FF5, so yes (FF9 changed it so that even drawn-out summon animations didn't pause the ATB, which is what made auto-regen so damn useful in that game).

Did anyone actually read the article this was pulled from? For the last question they asked him which FF game he would want to remake, he answered the question.

God I hate Kotaku.

Would be so freaking sweet. By far my favorite director/producer at Square. Despite all the silly whiny narratives cropping up amongst haters and critics and undue hate XIII gets, he should be really proud of it.

Screw the haters. Embrace the linearity. It's what FF is all about. If you don't like it go play something else.

So every time someone asks them about it they should awkwardly stare and not say anything. If they say they're interested SQUARE SHUT THE FUCK UP AND JUST DO IT. If they say they aren't interested, SQUARE YOU'RE SO FUCKING STOOPID.

So yeah, next time just have a blinking contest with the interviewer, or type "..." if it's an online interview. That's what some of you would prefer?

I still cannot fathom why people think a remake of a ps1 rpg would be any good. Probably just the usual FF7 freaks who will drool over anything related to their game.

The game is great as is. Trying to make it "fit" current gen standards would just end up in a mediocre game.

The graphics are currently terrible

The game would be enhanced if they weren't

Not very hard to fathom IMO

GAF should have made cloudbro, my head is fucked up so i got to slice/skewer you II: it's straight up zipper time.

everybody wins and this topic could get a well deserved rest.

No, seriously, you guys, Toriyama teased NOTHING. This thread is the perfect example of how people in GAF don't read anything other than the thread title before replying.

Actually, since we know PS3 will be the lead platform for any more FF games this generation (or so we'd think...), Sony would do well to throw money at Square for a timed exclusive FFVII. The reason is that FFVIIr would be possibly the only remaining megaton Sony could toss out on the PS3. And going into the back half of the PS3 life cycle Sony could use one more nuclear bomb to clear out system stock after 2010. Maybe throw FFVIIr out for spring 2013 to infuse one last breath of life.

Which of course, is why I'm also not hyped for even the possibility of a remake. I have zero faith Square would be able to turn out any game on that scale in less than 3 full years. More than likely, 4, or even 5.

Okay, I'll take X-2's battle system, but NOTHING ELSE post IX.

i remember when i used to flip out after reading news like this. it seems like times have changed. they won't do it. come on, guys. stop believing. even though the gaf logo tells you something else...

XIII has the better ATB and Dress Sphere system.

A battle system where the A.I. doesn't do what you want will never be better than one where you can control everyone.

Also, I'm not even talking about dress spheres or paradigms or whatever. That's not part of the battle system, that's just a mechanic in battles. I definitely wouldn't want something like that added in a 7 remake.

It would also make for a megaton launch title on the level of Super Mario 64. Personally, I think this is what all the cock teasing is about. They're just hyping the PS4, which will probably be announced at next years E3.

Stupid for you, not for everyone. Maybe some of us prefer the slower battle system and not have the speed upgraded to 2.0.

I haven't liked a FF battle system since X.
