Well, no one ever accused The Onion of not having serious fucking balls.

What topics are off-limits in The Onion?
None. Poop jokes are fine. Sex jokes too. Rape jokes are fine as long as they’re funny. We’ll make fun of retards and old people, and old retards too—don’t count them out. We’ve had advertisers pull their business, but we don’t care. I think that’s part of the secret of The Onion’s success.

What stories have riled up the advertisers the most?
They don’t like swearing, so “Foster Mom a Cunt” didn’t go down well. We did “Area Man Only Person Comfortable With His Nudity,” and we showed one of our writers in full-frontal nudity. They didn’t like that either. But the story that got the most mail was “Mary-Kate is Dragging Ashley Down.” And this was years ago. We got tons of angry letters in pink envelopes with stars. Little girls did not like that story.

What did you do to keep the paper’s flame of meanness alive during your post-9/11 coverage?
Usually, we don’t give a shit who we offend, but that was the one case in Onion history when we were worried that we would. At first we were going to avoid the topic all together, but then we realized that was ridiculous—people all over the country weren’t talking about anything else. So we sat down and came up with stories such as “Hijackers Surprised to Find Selves in Hell” and “U.S. Vows to Defeat Whoever It Is We’re at War With.”

Are there world events that you pray for so that you can make fun of them?
The next September 11. The first one was great for us. People saw what we did and were like, “You guys are funny. You made us feel good when we all felt bad.” We’re all just hoping for the next big one.
