FIFA 17 sells 40 times more copies than PES 2017.

You really have to question why Konami bother when you see these figures, but you also have to criticise their strategy recently. As much as I think these sales figures are drastically unfair, because I think the games are at a pretty similar level, this is surely the consequence of PES failing to differentiate itself properly. When FIFA went through a phase of copying PES's features, it was a sensible thing to do, because FIFA has such a massive default advantage due to their budget, their licenses and so on. At the point that PES started to copy FIFA's features, often not very well, they were signing their own death warrant.

For me to buy PES over FIFA would require me to feel that PES's gameplay is signifcantly better than FIFAs, and it plainly isn't. More than ever, FIFA seems totally unassailable, and you really have to fear for the franchise's future. They have got to go away this year and build something new that FIFA doesn't have, or they're done for.

Having the licences counts for an awful lot. If PES somehow got all the licences, it'd probably become the market leader. IMO.

This is suuuuuuuuuuuuuch a shame because the PES is a great game that deserves a large audience.
Many have said, that gameplay wise it is even a bit better than Fifa 17, but Fifa has more/better game modes/story.

For me, having played both, I am quite undecided about the two, but this is insane, because I have been Fifa player all my life...

I really hope:
1. sales pick up somehow magically (unlikely to happen, but perhaps with word of mouth and some discounts)
2. PES will not get discontinued

Good thing that sales do not = better game. Such a shame that so many people are playing a shit house soulless game of football like Fifa compared to the king since 2002 Pro Evo.

Similar to the Battlefield and COD situation

I know that, on PC at least, as long as Konami keeps releasing crappy PC ports of it, it'll keep selling like shit.

It'll sell like shit even if PC gets the full version. I'll never reach the levels of fun I had on the old PES games with any FIFA game, but you just got to admit it that's it done in terms of sales. FIFA is a juggernaut .

I don't think licences alone are the reason

I am pretty confident that Fifa would still outsell PES even if both games had the EXACT same licensed teams and leagues.

I'd say it's a combination of things that factor into the massive sales, advertising, Fifa 17 is pushed in your face everywhere, I can't remember an advert for pes 2017 on tv or youtube. Have you been on the PSN store for example? Fifa 17 plastered all over the store. Ultimate team is massive and I don't think people should underestimate the power youtubers have on sales. What big pes youtubers are there?! But there are loads of Fifa youtubers with millions of subscribers, these millions of people enjoy watching pack openings.

You've also got the presentation, which nowadays is very important, let's be honest to the average person pes looks like a joke on first glance, and the commentary is laughable.

While you can get around the licensing issues with option files, again the average consumer doesn't want to mess around with that. While it's very simple, we live in a society where a lot of people are not computer literate.

The other major factor is online play, ultimate team (a predominantly online mode) is the heart of Fifa, PES is perceived as terrible online so it puts potential buyers off.

It's unfortunate really because it means there's less incentive for EA to change certain things about Fifa. I'd have loved PES 2017 to outsell Fifa. But as things stand there is no incentive for EA to change their game.

I can see a point where Konami feel it's simply not cost effective to continue developing PES and soley focus on mobile games. That will be a very sad day as I would hate a monopoly on Football games.

If indeed true, that's such a damn shame.

Seconded. I only buy a soccer game once every 5 years or so but I think I'm going to jump on PES this year out of principle.

Also, the NFL 2k series was a big part of my youth so fuck EA.

While I agree that PES beats FIFA in game play this year(and last year), PES must do a better job at their overall game. I was hoping so hard that Konami actually gave a shit about their online stability so I could get PES this year, but they just do not. I can't take my player online to play Pro Clubs, I can't do online seasons, MyClub online...That is 3 things I enjoy doing in soccer games and only FIFA offers it due to Konami's laughable online stability.

Deserved. FIFA may not be perfect but PES is straight up garbage and has been for years.

I agree. I feel that most of the praise that I hear for PES come from non-soccer enthusiasts. Had EURO 2016 and burst into laughter at least 4-5 times a match. Just dreadful.

Is that why PES 2017 is reviewing better than FIFA 17?

PES seems to review pretty well every year. Eurogamer have been proclaiming "the return of the king" for the last 3 years. I think this is partly because PES has had more room for improvement in recent years, whereas FIFA has had only had minor tweaks most years since 2009.

PES is finished as far as competition is concerned.

Like it or loathe it, but EA have done a tremendous job of cementing FIFA in the minds of the football gaming public. They're part of the wider culture of football itself now, especially to younger demographics. They've also done well to cultivate modes like FUT and Pro Clubs that people return to annually as friend groups, not just as individuals.

PES is a good game again but FIFA now exists on another level. It's the defacto video game of the most popular sport on the planet and Konami don't have the power to change that.

This.

People here in the UK will buy a games console just for FIFA. Literally just FIFA. They'll play that all year, spending hundreds in FUT. And then they'll repeat when the next one comes out.

Er I take back my passionate statement, This is correct, Konami is a joke online. I gave pro evo a chance online 2 years back and the lag is just horrible, never touched it again. I guess because I never play these football games online I do not see the ugly side of pro evo, in terms of local multiplayer and master league the game is a pure blast & fifa feels like watching paint dry.

This makes me very sad.

I've been playing both FIFA and PES for the last several years. Both games have their own unique pros, and the strides that PES has taken over those years have been outstanding/astounding. The developers have truly done a great job, and if they're not getting sales or monetary credit, it saddens me.

Although I'm not the world's biggest soccer fan, I enjoy the games and would be saddened if PES were to die. I was gifted FIFA this year, after deciding I'd not buy a soccer game this year (I know that makes me part of the problem and somewhat hypocritical, but I'm on disability and usually don't play them nearly enough to make it worth the $90 purchase).

I hope PES will bounce back. It's a great series. It's just harder to get into because of its lack of different leagues.

Gameplay of PES 2017 is magnitudes better anything FIFA has ever put out, same could be said about 2016, but the online and whole presentation is lackluster/terrible and it's not a licensed product like FIFA.
Me personally, I only ever play local multiplayer and offline exhibition matches so I stick with pro evo.

Nah, BF may not beat COD but its no slouch either.

COD is similar to FIFA in that its the same shit every year, they love milking their fanbase because people buy it no matter what, while Battflefield and Pro Evo actually make improvements and changes with every new release.

Both games are good this year but PES 17 just has the edge gameplay-wise. Every goal is different and it feels faster and smoother than FIFA. Will be a shame if this series goes away as both of them existing makes both strive to be better, IMO.

They also paid like 40x as much for licenses, no? And when people say "Return of the King" they mean on the pitch, not in sales.

Deserved. FIFA may not be perfect but PES is straight up garbage and has been for years.

This is youtube levels of garbage posting.

Have you played the PES 2017 demo?
I played the PS4 demo and its definitely gotten a lot better over the years.

I still feel the AI isn't on par with FIFA though.
I still see where players don't run in to space thats been created.
Like I've said, I'm seeing much less of this happening, but I still see it.
And its stressful. You can use the L1+R analogue stick, but you need to do it manually instead of just flicking because its not just about running forward. And its near impossible to do it manually while you're taking control of the player who has the ball. (Or maybe I suck, I dunno...)

Anyways, thats the only thing I feel PES is lacking.
Other than that, I love the ball physics and graphics over FIFA.
The ball physics in FIFA feels too light to me, like I'm kicking a volleyball rather than a soccer ball.

I have trouble believing you've played FIFA 17 given this opinion. This edition of FIFA is absolutely excellent.

I played the demo and found it to be awful.

I'll end up having to buy it as well because all of my more casual gaming orientated friends will buy it.

Such a shame. I think FIFA 17 isn't very good this year, even the Journey mode, bar the novelty is a let down. I prefer FIFA 16 still.

I wonder what sells more in UK on PC: FIFA or Football Manager.

Football Manager bearly breaks 1 Million worldwide

Like Lister said, I'd bet it's Football Manager on PC by quite a bit. That game is like crack.

Yeah, I had someone offer to buy my PS3 off me just for FIFA.

Fifa sells more in week 1 than FM does in a year.
SI only announced last week FM16 breaking a million. The next selling FM ever only sold 1.3 iirc

Pes never outsold Fifa.

I checked it on VGCharz a year ago and it wasn't able to to that even during the Golden Winning Eleven Age on PS2.

This is sad and it shows us how dumb is people and how many fans are attracted by licences, stadiums,... they simply don't care how good is the game as long as it is fun.

That's why I think that Konami should focus on the simulative aspect of its game.
Pes should be the Assetto Corsa of the football games while Fifa is the Forza Horizon.

Reaping the rewards of being the better game since the last decade.

No, not true since 2 years, plus licenses are a faux problem. With batch import this year. I've got Epl,championship, french ligue 1, french ligue 2, serie A, serie B, Dutch Eredivise, Spanish liga 1, Spanish liga 2, liga Nos, Bundesliga and 24 other european teams fully updated (rosters and kits) plus Brazilian, Argentinian and Chile licensed teams, Liga Mx and 24 other latin america teams all with rosters and kits, plus Jleague with rosters and kits. Plus all kits and rosters for national teams included. For clubs only , that represents more than 320 real teams...
How much clubs Fifa has got yet...?

Attempts to act elitist, calls it soccer

Considering they don't only have Adam Bhatti hired, but also refuse to make a proper pc version and keep on region locking, this is exactly what they deserve. Would love for Konami to pull the plug on PES (probably unlikely, but one can hope), which could hopefully get another company to see an opportunity and make a proper new football series.

Until then Fifa will have to do. It's not great, actually it's not even good, but it does the job better than PES.

I'm in the UK, I prefer PES to FIFA and yet I got FIFA. Purely because the game modes interest me more. PES gameplay on FIFAs structure would be incredible.

That's not how it works. If Konami were to pull the plug then FIFA would have a monopoly of the market.
