FIFA 17 sells 40 times more copies than PES 2017.

I'm in the UK, I prefer PES to FIFA and yet I got FIFA. Purely because the game modes interest me more. PES gameplay on FIFAs structure would be incredible.

That is probably my biggest problem as well. The game mode I play almost exclusively, is not there in PES. and if it was, I could not play with quite a few of the people I wanted to, due to their hilarious online region locking.

That's not how it works. If Konami were to pull the plug then FIFA would have a monopoly of the market.

Well one could hope another company would try. But they clearly already pretty much do have monopoly, look at the sales lol.

A huge shame, but Konami/Sea Bass only have themselves to blame, really. The damage was done years ago.

Konami fucked up with the transition to Xbox 360/PS3.
They remained stuck in the PS2 era with graphics, presentation and animations losing a lot of credibility and fans.

They use to give FIFA a good run for their money at the time (peak was PES 6) and now that PES is the superior game again, they've already lost to the FIFA indoctrinated crowd.

I could barely get my younger bro to try PES demo over FIFA 17, he was just having none of it.

lol!

Then your point is moot since other company could already join in given PES's irrelevance.

Eh it's still a risk for other companies, that Konami would actually pull it together* and start making good games again, that would also sell well. We all remember PES5. What if they could do that again. Then there's also the whole licensing issue, which is only more complicated with both fifa and pes.

*i know that is a very small risk

Last week I went to a store to get a physical game, and the line for the cashier was filled with people buying FIFA. Somebody even had preordered it.

Nope. PES has been the better game this gen.

The series sold better than PES during the glory days (PES 4-6), so quality of gameplay doesn't mean much.

I'd say this year PES is as good or better than FIFA, but last years PES was flawed big time. The goalkeepers and referees were terrible and it ruined the game. 2017 has ironed out those issues and made it a genuinely good game. This is the first time since the very early days of last gen that PES has been anywhere near better than FIFA.

(i know that is a very small risk).

But PES17 is already an excellent game. The best PES ever, actually. Quality isn't the issue.

How can you say that when online is as bad as it is with PES.

The best you read anyone saying about it is at least it's a little less leggy, like any lag is acceptable in am online sports game

Fifa wouldn't sell near what it does if the AI play was the focus. Playing sports games offline is about as tedious as gaming gets, that's a huge part in any most people won't even give PES a second glance.

PES has broken as fuck online. People don't buyou sports games to play the AI.

There were people praising it in the OT for only being a "little laggy" . That isn't acceptable , at all.

I play online on PES every night, some games are laggy, that's true, but it's the same for Fifa stop bullshiting about Fifa having zero lag. Fifa's advantage with online though is related to the massive pool of players, allowing EA to easily connect People with good internet bandwith.

That's pretty natural in UK(I guess, I am from Greece), PES doesn't have the licenses and I find it a major turn off.
I am not even a football fan but I play(PES) once in a while at friend homes, I always struggle to find which team is which, except Chelsea which is the team I supported back when I was a tiny bit interested..

Pro Evolution Soccer reached its peak in 2006 with 970,000 units sold, it still was half a million away from FIFA. In 2005 (2004 too) the battle was very fierce, it was the lowest difference between both franchises.

2007 was the last year Pro Evolution Soccer put up some sort of fight in the UK.

2007

FIFA 08 - 1,391,435
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 - 787,382

2006

FIFA 07 - 1,480,000
Pro Evolution Soccer 6 - 970,000

2005

FIFA 06 - 1,000,000
Pro Evolution Soccer 5 - 800,000

I know that, on PC at least, as long as Konami keeps releasing crappy PC ports of it, it'll keep selling like shit.

No PES's biggest problem will always be licensing, period. The mainstream doesn't know about data imports and don't want to play with North London FC. This directly impacts FUT as well which WEPES has no answer for.

But PES17 is already an excellent game. The best PES ever, actually. Quality isn't the issue.

Quality isn't and has never been the only driving force behind why people buy which football game.

I'm right there with you in loving this years PES. For me it's the best PES ever made and, by extension, probably the best football game ever made. At least where gameplay is concerned.

Yet despite holding that view, I've not touched it since buying FIFA. Realistically, I don't need 2 football games, and my overall experience with FIFA is better than it is with PES. I find PES more enjoyable to play, but FIFA has it beat for me in literally every other aspect. My experience playing locally, online, even offline with Career Mode and The Journey, is just better in FIFA. I think I could stick with PES exclusively if all I wanted to do was endlessly play Exhibition matches, but I don't, and therefore PES starts to become less appealing when compared to FIFA as a bigger picture in terms of modes, licenses etc.

This is why EA pays out the nose for licenses. Based on both demos I actually preferred PES and would buy it over FIFA, but I imagine for the U.K. this is like a competitor launching a Madden competitor in North America but only having the licenses for the Packers and Dolphins. Sales wise they'd get trounced as well.

It's a shame, PES certainly deserves better, but even with option files it'll never touch FIFA because of licenses.

Which I get, I used to be that guy and it was a lot easier to be when PES was garbage. However this year I picked up PES with no regrets. Game is fantastic. Gameplay is much better than FIFA has been in years and Master League is a lot more engrossing than the very stagnant FIFA career mode, which needs some new life breathed into it (or any life, really). I'll probably get FIFA when they patch in Atlanta United, though.

I really wish PES could actually pick up all the licenses and get on even footing with FIFA, but it'll never happen.

Edit: Plus, FUT. That shit is super addictive to people. Never got it myself.

This.

People here in the UK will buy a games console just for FIFA. Literally just FIFA. They'll play that all year, spending hundreds in FUT. And then they'll repeat when the next one comes out.

Really? Who are these people? Kids?

He's right. My friends boyfriend bought his Xbox One on launch and the only games he has for it are FIFA 14,15,16,17 and he also has GTA 5 but only because she bought him it for his birthday, he's 30.

She text me one day asking me what FUT packs were. She then told me the reason why she was asking was because she had just read his bank statement and he had spent £1400+ on FUT packs that's fourteen hundred fucking pounds and here's the killer, he managed to spend all that in one month. When confronted he broke down in tears and begged forgiveness saying it wouldn't happen again. As far as I know it hasn't, if it had in sure she would've told me.

That's the power of FIFA.

Also to add, he was originally a BIG PES/ISS guy but when it got shit he asked me if FIFA 10/11 was any good as that's what I was playing at the time and I told him it was miles better than PES which it was at the time. I created a monster :(

Me, I'm PES all day long, gameplay wins every time.

Wasn't elitist at all, I mean when I play with friends that know FOOTBALL (OK, I'm in a mostly populated by americans forum, should I create confusion? no. I'm italian btw, so nice try I guess) very well, watch games every week and so forth, I cannot find a single person who prefers PES. It's just my experience, while most of the people that are more casual on the sport actually have different opinions. And I absolutely agree with the former, end of story.

PES was leagues ahead on Ps2. Me and my friends all shat on FIFA, and we even used OF on Ps2. We rocked the JP Version. Wars were being fought.

I think all those guys play FIFA nowadays. Sad but PES was shite for the better part of the Ps3 generation.

It's a shame really, cause even if FIFA has all the whistles and bells, the actual gameplay is miles behind that of PES, in my humble opinion of course.

Maybe EA should just buy Konami and we can have the best of both worlds. ;-)

I know towards the end of the PS2 era all my brothers friends who care about football for more than me had switched to PES because it was the far better game. If someone played FIFA they were laughed at for only caring about player names. I guess they are currently close enough that FIFA can be carried by the licences? Or is it just Fifa Ultimate Team.

That's an extreme example but, yeah, take the £1,400 a month on FUT packs out and I'd say that story is a representative slice of the UK games industry.

The older I get the more I sympathise with that view, to be fair. I've already bought FIFA and PES and I'll probably buy COD and Battlefield this year. And other than Resident Evil 7 those might be the only games I buy until PES and FIFA roll around again next year unless something from Rockstar appears in the meantime.

We're in a FIFA thread, I don't think there would have been any confusion lol.

If you look through this thread you'll find plenty of people who prefer PES including myself.

I'm not saying your opinion is invalid. I'm just referring to the people I know, that's it.

And seriously, are we still talking about that word?

Jeeeysus those FUT packs really are like crack eh?
No wonder EA is raking it in big time with ultimate team.

I remember Nirolak or someone posted FUT rev sometime ago, my mind was blown.
Anyway I shouldn't be so shocked, that's a pittance compared to what some whales spend on mobile games.

Never cared for FIFA (after the 2D versions) but I was such a HUGE fan of PES until one version just killed it forever for me.

PES-Jaquettes-history.jpg

I want to say 2009? Something around then was drastically different and I've never been more quickly turned off a franchise before.

PES has always been better then FiFa even when it was Winning Eleven. EA is trying to do what they did to 2K sports and the NFL! buying up rights cause they know their game isn't as good. Stupid ass EA pisses me off! I would much rather play a fully licensed PES game over Fifa.

Because I don't play online, so I don't really care. Most of the casual FIFA fans I know tend to play local multiplayer mostly.

Like I say, both have their pros and cons, and I find it tough to declare one better than the other this year for the first time in a while.

Even last year's PES was good, but they fucked up with the transfer updates, bad online, and region locking. For convenience alone it's not really worth sticking with PES, even though it has the better gameplay right now.

I agree. I feel that most of the praise that I hear for PES come from non-soccer enthusiasts. Had EURO 2016 and burst into laughter at least 4-5 times a match. Just dreadful.
looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

Yes but maintstream people are all for FIFA now, the dream is dead and it'll take years to counter the "problem".

PES tried to counter the problem with getting the champions league licence, that's obviously not working and it's just a matter of time until that's back in FIFA and PES is left with scraps. It's a shame because it's such a good football game.

PES has been shit for so many years, that one good year isn't going to make any noticeable difference in sales. Word of mouth on the game spread over two generations of consoles to reach its PES6 peak. It needs to be consistently that good over the years to reach sales like that again.

Still won't beat FIFA though.

I think the problem PES has is that in the PS1/PS2 days, it was significantly and obviously a far better game than FIFA, whereas now the gap, if there is one, is much, much smaller. It easy to look beyond licenses and presentation when the alternative product is garbage, but now the games are much closer in quality, stuff like that is more of a draw, making it tougher for PES to win back some of the fans who defected to FIFA last gen.

Regardless, FIFA is always going to sell more because EA put way more marketing muscle behind it than Konami do with PES, and it has the FIFA brand behind it, which somehow is a positive...

I went with PES again this year because Arsenal were licensed, if they weren't I'd have stuck with FIFA/PES 16 until FIFA 17 hit the EA Access Vault, as last years roster update issue really soured PES 16 for me. As much as I really love this year's PES, I really can't be arsed to edit teams anymore (no Bayern was also a big miss), so I think I'm done with it until they improve the overall package to at least rival FIFA (presentation, commentary, game modes etc.).

One area I'd like PES to concentrate on (FIFA as well tbh, but they've touched on it with The Journey), and one that'd ensure they get my money, is to help players craft their own stories within career mode and have the game reflect around their performance. Let me take a team from the lower leagues and turn them into a powerhouse, have the stadium grow as you attract more fans and money and in turn, sign better players who were off-limits previously (or the ability to do a Leeds). Pick a team like Arsenal or Liverpool, have the game reflect their past success via commentary, but update it should they add to that (Arsenal have now won the CL for the first ever time, or Liverpool have once again won the most league titles in England and so on).

That would just add to the immersion for me and keep me from being annoyed when the commentators state it's been a while, even though I've won the league 3 years in a row!

Yea my best friend only plays all the Fifa games, he bought the day one edition Xbox One with Fifa 14. Lots of people at my old job did exactly the same thing, only difference is they also bought COD every year.

Now I don't know how she knew it was FUT packs because statements don't even mention FIFA, never mind FUT or packs. Also if it's his card/money don't know why he would break down and apologise.

the uk are ea's territory, while fifa it's probably still on top by a good margin,i'm sure that in othr countries the situation s nowhere that desperate

It more crazy with how the pricing in UK is for FIFA it ridiculously expensive compared to most games and still gets bought

I helped in that too, last two years i played PES but this year i switched to FIFA 17, PES servers and online modes are not as good as FIFA ones, and playing online is all i do in these games, gameplay wise instead they're different, to me PES 2016 was way better in gameplay than FIFA 16, but this year FIFA really got better so i guess overall it's the best soccer game.
That said i don't think PES will die, true FIFA sells way more, though PES still brings money to Konami, and they added lots of microtransaction in My Club mode which makes good profits for them, and from what i'm seeing that's the only thing Konami is into now, make money from microtransaction stuff

FIFA has all the official teams/players and the gameplay is not terrible or anything. Until PES gets all the licenses, FIFA will always outsell it.

We don't have Fifa numbers because of EA, and the last few PES releases have been shit on PC, but I don't think it sells as well on PC than on consoles. But I don't think it's dead.

funnyn thing is PES on steam peak numbers keeps going up every year, if they actually cared and released a proper version the game would sell a lot more. EA gave us the shaft for a very long time on fifa pc as well, once they made the switch sales got better.

konamis just doesnt understand that alienating your fans with a shitty dodgy port of last gen, is not the way to communicate with the fans.
