Unlike most people here I have to congratulate FIFA for bOth decisions. Sure, they were driven by money, but they are gonna help the internal development of two countries that do need it.

Its Qatar, they don't need to have internal development. They have a town where all the oil guys stay at while working in the country, and an airport. Hold it in India or Indonesia if you want that.

I'm happy it didn't go to England, the resulting media storm is going to be hilarious.

Also, I'm Scottish.

That, actually, is something to look forward to.

EDIT: Haha, LBC is already going apeshit on the BBC/Panorama

Enjoy Qatar in 2022! No beer, no women, nothing to do outside the matches....... fantastic choice FIFA. Seriously what a joke. Ah Germany 2006! How I miss thee.

Hells yes, Qatar!

I would love it if my country hosted the world cup but it will never happen. Qatar is as close as we're gonna get. It's gonna be great if Saudi qualifies, we'll probably have more fans than the locals :D

oh yeah, before I forget....

I love how a choice doesn't go to a certain countries way and so its citizens say nothing more than "FIFA ARE CORRUPT!"

Of course they are corrupt, it's been that way for a long time. Still it went to Brazil for the next one.
FIFA are corrupt. There is a lot of evidence for claiming important world up matches have been rigged in favour of host nations, and their stubornness for not including technology in refereeing is suspicious enough to make many claim under the table negotiations.

I'm happy Russia and Qatar got it, but let's not get absolve them here.

so other than corruption, what's so bad about Qatar hosting the games?

Seems like a place I'd want to travel to to watch the WC.

29C - 46C with 80% humidity in July. fuck that.

i live in the tropics and that sounds fucking evil. in fact i guy from here flys in and out of there for work and he said its unbelievably HOT!!!

I know the FIFA rankings don't mean shit, but Qatar is ranked 113th in the world right now - or 30 places below fucking CANADA. :lol

And these guys will get seeded and are guaranteed to avoid the Group of Death. If I'm England, I'm getting the bribe money ready to get in Group A and stomp Qatar 15-nil.

Yes and the alleged Russia bribing refs for Spain so that Spain bids for Russia and helps to get people vote for them.

As well as the fact Russia needing to build the infrastructure and stadiums, is stupid. And Quatar being classed as a hisk risk and awarding them the bid is stupid also.

Yeah,...England will probably lose.

Exactly how is Qatar gonna "develop" further? Their per-capita GDP is already ludicrously high, and it's almost entirely based on oil.

They need help getting over their terrible human rights record and fundamentalist religious rule, not developing their economy.

Don't forget the temps over 110 degrees!

Why is everyone talking about the one after being in China? What's that based on?

I thought they were saying that they wont get the next one due to their neighbour getting it and a middle eastern country getting it?

They should have postulate themselves ten. Out of the five nations that went for 2022 they have the most potential for infrastructural growth.

They will get it. Come on, how can FIFA not? bringing the World Cup to the largest country in the world? they'd be crazy not to!

Re: Qatar:The bottom line for me is the players aren't going to want to play there and fans aren't going to want to watch. Its great that they might have awesome stadiums with AC for the games- but are they going to AC the entire country? The event is going to be completely neutered for the fans. I was really hoping US would win, but I would have been fine with Australia.

wrong on beer and women. Qatar may be a boring place, but it will liven up when the football carnival comes to town.

normally i can't stand this country (uk), but i think england could have put on an amazing world cup. An olympic china level of spectacle.
I'm glad we didn't get it. We can't afford that kinda shit at the moment.

Will there be women allowed in the stadiums? And if so without headscarf especialy when they are not muslims? What about alcohol in the stadiums?

Quatar has huge potential to become the most pathetic football world cup ever and that's telling after the pos wc we just witnessed this year.

Well yeah I don't doubt that china would get it, they did an awesome job with the olympics and they don't have any real draw backs other than the media issues.

It's awesome that Russia and Qatar won and not a country who already hosted it before

Even more awesome are the meltdowns here :lol

Russia is not a bad choice. Footballing nation, although with some big racism/hooliganism/corruption problems, Qatar is just a joke: 1.6million, hot as hell and number 113 on the FIFA ranking. That's like having Norway host the Super Bowl. They will be slaughtered in the group stage and I'll enjoy every single second of it.

FIFA has forgotten that football is about the fans and the World Cup should be the biggest fan-celebration in the world. Which they failed in South Africa due to pricing the locals out of the matches and they'll fail in Qatar. Moneygrabbing scumbags.

I actually don't mind Qatar getting it, but since the US hosted, the selected World Cup have been in:

Europe
Asia (Far East)
Europe
Africa
SA
Europe
Asia (Middle East)

Not only is Europe the only repeat (the Asian selections are too far apart to count,) it's hosted three times! Why does this "global" game so favor the second smallest continent? For all the British complaining, I'd love to have had the opportunity to have to travel as little Brits have had to do to see the Cup. Seriously, all of Europe is only 353,325 sq/km larger than the US. The Cup being in France or Germany to Brits is like the Cup being in New York and Illinois to a Pennsylvanian.

Hell, maybe they should just call it the Eastern Hemisphere Cup and be done with it.

So is Qatar classed as Asia or the Middle East, rotation wise?

You're not telling me because Qatar is hosting 2022, Australia can't host until 2034? :lol

Fuck I'll be 50! And probably not living in Australia.

Middle East is in Asia. So Asia.

I'm Scottish and I would have wanted it in England.

The sad thing about all of this is you just know that the BBC is the one who is going to get all the ire of the public, rather than it being directed at FIFA where it belongs.

Maybe because European football is the most popular world wide? It'd be interesting to see what % of players at the World Cup in South Africa play in Europe.

If I'm being kind, FIFA are clearly more interested in implanting their 'legacy' (ugh) in order to create new commercial zones for football thoughout the world. So they should at least rule out 'merit' as a criterion for future bid processes.

My Response

This is exactly the case; the legacy of giving the WC to regions that have never had it before was a strength that no presentation, no matter how good, could match. If anything, England's strength in the infrastructure and it's association with football was an inherent disadvantage in comparison to the attraction of uncharted continents.

But England coming last, behind Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Holland will cause waves of anger in the media and people will refuse to acknowledge any thing that doesn't paint FIFA as corrupt taking money behind closed doors. England not winning is one thing, but coming last? That is just a joke

By the way alcohol will be authorized:
[Hassan Abdulla al Thawadi, chief executive of the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid, said the Muslim state would also permit alcohol consumption during the world’s most watched sporting event.

I believe they've done away with that rule about cycling continents. At least as far as 12 years go.

Sad thing is unlike the (shitty) Olympics, the WC wouldn't have cost a lot. Although we now have built in excuses for the media when we get knocked out (Russia= too cold, Qatar= too hot)

Right. I was hoping the US would get it since I'm 20 miles away from one of the venues, but honestly, in 12 years I might be in a position to be able to go to Australia for the WC- that would be fucking awesome. Qatar? No way.
