FIFA 2018/2022 World Cup Announcement

It sucks the World Cup won't be in England (hearing those stories about Russian Racism isn't very conductive for me to try to attend that cup) but fuck Oceania, after screwing South Africa out of the 2006 world cup, I sure as hell don't have any sympathy for them. Its also those fuckers at blame for the continent rotational system FIFA employs now

Actually, soccer (or football) is the most followed sport in Qatar. Soccer is nearly non-existent in Australia on the other hand and I'd imagine soccer in America isn't too big too...

Also, 11 years to get it right.

Right. FIFA itself said Qatar was a high risk bid. That's not bias- its fact! And like I've said, I would have been perfectly fine with Australia getting it.

australia is a fucking island in the middle of nowhere, and they have their own version of football like americans do

qatar is in an area where the world cup hasn't been before and where Fifa is looking to increase their profile. the same may be true of australia, but again it's a fucking island in the middle of nowhere

i think it's good that it's going to asia, and i hope we see plenty more world cups in both asia and africa. you lot can gtfo

I don't even know where to start.

I'm pretty sure my home state of New Jersey has more soccer fans than Qatar. Come on people, don't be ignorant.

:lol Damn I just realized that you're trolling. Well done. That last one was a little too blatant though.

I wouldn't know, I live in Australia and I thought baseball, football and basketball were always the bigger sports. I guess your word is bigger than mine.

But soccer is the most followed sport in Qatar and can be considered a "football country".

Yes, those sports are bigger. But the U.S is such a big country that there is a lot of room for other sports.

You're right, its behind all of those sports. We still have more soccer fans then Qatar.

Soccer's popularity is sky-rocketing in the states. When I was a kid, nobody knew what the fuck soccer was. I'm not even joking. It was only played by 5 year olds.

What a complete joke. I guess I better start saving for Brazil 2014 because there's no way I'm gonna pay a lot more for Russia and Qatar.

I want to go once while I'm still in my 20's

I'm certainly not saying the US or Australia should have won. I think The Benelux had the best infrastructure in place, maybe England second. Not that I wanted us to win, but I think we have a great country which is open to all.

if you're from australia you should also know that soccer is the no1 sport for kids in the country. More kids here play soccer than AFL/Rugby/Cricket. Soccers following in australia is skyrocketing in recent years, the last two world cups really helped that. The A-League is still a joke but there's time for that to improve.

There are probably more people in Australia that follow soccer than people that exist in Qatar. It is an absolute joke. Waiting for the inevitable wikileaks on this.

:lol thats true but Australia is an isolated country while Qatar is in the middle of Asia, Africa and Europe.

My step-mother is Russian and she always tells stories of the high levels of corruption across all areas of life in Russia (not just the government). It did not surprise me in the slightest that they won.

Something I could support from wikileaks :lol

Given that FIFA gets away with even its most blatantly corrupt bullshit, I fear that leaks might have little effect.

I just want Sepp Blatter to fall off a cliff.

Congrats to Russia & Qatar. Glad its going to new countries. Would of preferred it was here in Australia of course. We might have had a legitimate team 20 years from now if we did :lol Would have been pissed if it went to America again. A country should only hold it once every hundred years imo.

yeah, sure hurt our bid for the olympics.... o wait.

I'm not upset only because we lost, but Qatar being chosen is an absolute joke for the reasons I've already mentioned. IMO the two best choices for 2022 were Australia and the USA. I would have been upset if the USA won because they had it in 94, but at least it would have made sense from a climate, population, attendance, facilities and also that their own national team is quite good. The only reason Qatar won is obviously because of the massive money hats, and that is what makes this a joke.

Mexico only got it again cause Colombia couldn't hold it. The others had significant gaps in between them except for germany/west germany which isnt even really the same country.

Yeah they don't have a tourism industry or anything. Basically nobody would ever want to/could travel to Australia. Ever. Good point.

Actually, no. You might have an argument with the GDR, but the FRG is the same country, just with new territory.

Was hoping to travel to one of the World Cups sometime in my life, but now It looks like I'mma have to save up sooner for Brazil cause my ass isn't going anywhere near Russia or Qatar.

A distinction without difference. Düsseldorf was the only city that hosted in 1974 that didn't host in 2006. Even then the time between hosting was/will be Brazil - 64 years, France - 60, Germany - 32, Italy - 56, and Mexico - 16. An average of 46 (53 if you take out Mexico,) and a far cry from the 100 years you'd propose.

Here's what I'd propose, a real confederational rotation schedule. Make OFC merge with AFC, and give each confederation one WC in five. We could even start it retroactively back to the last time UEFA jumped the order:

CAF - South Africa
CONMEBOL - Brazil
UEFA - Russia
AFC - Qatar
CONCACAF - ?

That makes perfect sense but of course that won't happen.

thinking about it a bit more. it'd be kind of hard to consistently have an African cup

It only comes around every twenty years, and South Africa worked well enough that I'm sure there's two or three other countries that could host. Hell, even CONCACAF has three or four that could pull it off.

Perhaps it was wrong for Germany to get it again. Forget what happened in the past, going forward no country should get it more than once a hundred years. There is probably 50+ countries that want it and could put on a good tournament and they should all get a chance.

It'd be nice if FIFA recognized that half of those aren't in Europe.

But can that really be used as a basis for choosing the world cup? I mean by that logic, China should be first in line to host the world cup.

Interesting. News to me, but I'm not really saying Australia shouldn't have gotten the Cup (would have liked it myself) as we have enough stadiums and have handled both the Olympics and Commonwealth in the past decade. The post you quoted was in reply to a post suggesting Qatar isn't a football country.

There is nothing wrong with Qatar hosting the cup other than the alleged (confirmed?) corruption present.

Australia isn't that isolated.

I mean, relative to the power balance of the last 1000 years we are, but considering who's going to be powerful in the next 100 years, we're closer than Europe and America.

On top of that, the Australian timezone works perfectly for China and the rest of Asia.

Also, quick question for the Americans - I was listening to PTI this morning and Wilbon was pronouncing it 'Cutter'. Is that how the rest of you pronounce it? Everyone here pronounces it like guitar, but with a k sound.

Also, "The bidder has submitted an expenditure budget of USD 645.5 million"...

Wow @ pages 14-15. Those stadiums look stunning.

review the population of the cities vs. the size of the stadiums

edit:
Qatar FIFA bid Evaluation said:
City - Population - Stadium Size

Al-Daayen - 36,592 - 86,250

Al- Shamal - 11,229 - 45,120

Umm Slal - 44,177 - 45,120

:/

Just had a thought: Were the hell are the teams going to train during the Cup? There aren't even any stadiums built; does Qatar have any training facilities? Teams can't train outside in that heat. They'll have to train in other countries and fly in for their matches.
