This just proves the idiocy of Qatar winning. Yay for Qatar because they'll introduce airconditioned open stadiums to the world and are so friendly and welcoming that they will even allow Jews to play sports matches on Qatar soil.
What the hell do you want man seriously? Gonna complain if they don't allow them in but will complain if they do too?

I can't believe how much ignorance there is in this thread, most of the posters here are acting like Qatar is terrorism central or something and are hating on a lot of situations that have been addressed. Matches won't be affected by the weather because of the AC, and yes the weather outside is hot but its not as bad some of you guys are making it out to be. The weather gets up to 50 degrees celsius where I come from so 30 degrees isn't bad, and sure I'm more adjusted to it then someone from say Canada might be, but don't worry I guarantee you won't burn to a crisp as soon as you step outside. And they already allow alcohol in Qatar, at least in hotels (I went there a couple years ago). So I'm sure they'll be shit to do if you're looking to get a vacation and not just a WC, plus you got the Arabian Gulf and 12 years for a bunch of new things to be set up before its time. 12 YEARS. If you really want to go sightseeing elsewhere badly then you have 12 years to do it before you have to "endure soulless Qatar".

Edit: Although if I were able to pick an area in the middle east I'd think the UAE would be best suited for the WC, or maybe even a multi-nation thing in the Arabian Gulf, but I have no doubt Qatar is up to the task.

Being Dutch, I am glad that the Holland/ Belgium bid was rejected. Firstly, because we don't have the infrastructure or the capacity to house all the people flying in from all over the world. Secondly, we currently have a budget deficit of close to 6%, we shouldn't be wasting money on things like this. Thirdly, Our Soccer teams aren't big enough for the types of stadiums needed for a World Cup, meaning that those new stadiums would go to waste. And, our Football League is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

Thank you FIFA for not placing that burden on my country.

Why did anyone think the US would get it? They had it in 1994, they can have it again in 2094. Why would they deserve more? They're not a footballing nation.

And Obama publicly whining about it? facepalm.gif

I don't think you understand how much world soccer would benefit if the US actually picked up a real interest in it. In the US alone, there are 4 major professional sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) and combined they easily bring in more money by themselves in just one country than soccer brings in elsewhere in the whole rest of the world. If soccer made real inroads in the US it would be the biggest windfall in FIFA's history, and this is FIFA we're talking about here. :lol

The 1994 World Cup led directly to the creation of MLS and over the next decade and a half the US went from nowhere and nothing in soccer to a country which has a successful and expanding professional soccer league and a national team which has appeared in every World Cup held during the 21st century. We also became a team which regularly defeats Mexico, much to their bitterness and hatred. :lol

What the hell are you on about? Where is it said you have to wait 100 years to host a tournament again. Where in the history of host venues does it even imply that this is the case?

Your justification is the US isnt a footballing nation so its alright for Qatar to host? :lol :lol

The amount of people that follow soccer in the US dwarfs the entire population of Qatar.

What you talking about?!

Feyenoord is getting a bigger stadium and can get it full, PSV stadium is getting a bigger capacity and will get it full. Twente is getting a bigger stadium and has enough fans to get it full. Don't know about the Belgium stadiums but that's not our problem.

And our infrastructure is almost perfect! Great railroad lines, enough buses, good highway's between the cities (especially in the summer when there aren't many traffic jams).
We have plenty of hotel rooms in our big city, and if we don't have enough we could always build more hotels before 2018.

I'm really disappointed :(

Which ones, the old shitty used German trains? :lol :lol

Actually, if you have a joint bid with Belgium, then Belgian stadiums ARE your problem.

No they are not, but i know where you are coming from and i personally blame Belgium being on the verge of bankruptcy for this :lol

I know that the stadiums in Belgium would be great, new stadiums in Antwerpen, Brussel, Gent, Brugge... I meant that I don't know how full they will be when the WC is over. (but as a Dutchman that's not my problem)

We have the second most busy railway in the world, 6.5% of the population takes the train daily. And there are a minimum of delays.

Or trains may not be the best or newest, but they certainly aren't bad!

I'm going to spend 10 years stockpiling the ingredients for the Full English Breakfast just outside the borders of Qatar. Come 2022 I will open a concession stand outside each stadium using my countrymen as serving staff & bouncers. I'll make an absolute fortune.

The Full English Breakfast will be accompanied by a nice cool pint, served by a topless woman in bright red shorts, sponsored by 'The Sun'. Instant national hero.

And lol at the British press today.
I thought "FIFA BUNGS RUSSIA WORLD CUP" was worth a chortle.

Smoky, I am not your countryman, nor am I of the size or temperament to bounce anything but a tennis ball, but I am on your side. Fucking blisteringly spiffing notion.

FIFA Executice Committee Member: To award England the World Cup would have been the final insult

As I said before, if the BBC and the Sunday Times had let them vote before publishing these allegations, they would be completely fucked.

Now your making things up and believing it. They should build an AC in your arse to cool the butthurt.

Edit:
Im more worried about Russia - how hot does it get in Russia during summer? Part of the WC experience is the summer atmosphere, it'll be depressing watching a game with murky clouds and little summer sun.

The weather will be fine in Russia, the average temp is around 20c during the Summer.

My favourite is the description of Qatar as a medieval kingdom. :D

Fanzones will be cooled using the same (solar powered) air conditioning technology. Qatar will make this technology available for other countries with hot climates.

All those "cities" are within 20-25 kilometers of each other. Everyone in Qatar can attend any game quite easily. It's even one of the highlights of the bid: fans can attend more than one match in one day.

Mad props to Russia for winning, I think that we Spanish - Portuguese have the same problem that England had: soccer needs no further implementation here. We all know that It would have been amazing, but I am counting on Russia's love for megalomanic infrastructures and booze to make up for that. Now, Qatar, that's a bullshit choice and it will provide a bullshit, mediocre World Cup.

1. Tiny corrupt, oil rich, West-hating Nation. So wrong

West - hating? Nah. Tiny and corrupt? Yup.

2. Giant security nightmare. Enough money for security

Enough to bribe Al Qaeda and their perfect chance to screw up a western celebration AND a "not muslim enough country"? I fear not. I do hope that everything goes alright, but this is going to be a hell of a job for Qatar's security forces, much more than for any other country.

3. Average daytime temperature during matches: 101 degrees. Football for real men

More like ZERO SPECTACLE, which is what the world cup is all about.

5. Zero tolerance for normal human behavior. Biased, there is enough tolerance for "normal" human behavior

A country where I cannot walk freely on the streets while holding hands with my girlfriend or kiss her in public is not a country worth of visiting, nor "normal", unless you consider wahabism and kafala laws something normal, which speaks volumes about your country's and mindset's "normality".

It's called a World Cup. Yes, that means it has to be held around the world, meaning countries you may not have known to exist or particularly know anything about or particularly agree with their society. Get over yourselves for crying out loud. It's amazing how we can hate on FIFA for having politics a factor for their decisions and yet all the supporters now can do nothing but air their own political views. That's a farce. You should be hopeful and excited of how those regions will react to the WC coming there with all the worlds best players and teams. When you're in a stadium, that guy sitting next to you may come from Russia or the Middle East or fucking Mars, and yet he's just as passionate as you about watching the sport - the game. That's what it's about at the end.

Judge 2018 after the games, and judge 2022 after that. Not 12 years before. Some of you are coming off as utter and total pricks to be honest. You're meant to be football fans, and I don't know about anyone else here, but one of the best sights of the South African WC was seeing the excitement of a continent to be able to host the games. People crowding around a 10" TV in the middle of the street with chickens and goats beside them. That's the spirit of the game, not this purified sheisse

I'm not a football fan. For me, the highlight of the World Cup is seeing the gorgeous women of each nation wearing little but bikinis, smiles & team colours.

Will Qatar accommodate this?

We're not mad because it's an Arabic country, nor because it's in the Middle East, and maybe just a twinge because we (US) lost, but we're mostly mad because it's a shitty choice for multiple other reasons posted in the thread.

So I guess the real question is, how much spirit can Qatar's money buy them? Surely they could put out enough money to send some 10'' TVs, goats and chickens to poorer villages around the Middle East so they too can watch this.

Sorry but thats way off the mark. Do you think people wouldn't be asking similar questions about the other countries if they had won the bid? All bids were evaluated by FIFA on guidelines and criteria set out by FIFA and the 2 weakest bids based on those evaluations were the two winning bids contrast that with the allegations of corruption and I think people have every right to question the process and the winning bids credentials of hosting the World Cup. I do think some of the posts have been too vitriolic

Right. I've said this before- people aren't making this crap up. FIFA itself evaluated the bids and found that Qatar's was technically the worst. And yet it had half the votes in the first round. That doesn't invite a certain amount of skepticism?

I would think the work and interest generated provides the opportunity to its locals to help themselves. If they work for it.

The investment of billions into this tournament is also to bolster its standing globally - far more pragmatic and sustainable then sending free utilities.
