FIFA Soccer 10 or PES 2010? Which would you recommend?

I'm currently downloading the demos for FIFA Soccer 10, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, and World Cup 2010 from the PlayStation store. I'll post some feedback tomorrow and hopefully make my decision by then. Thanks a lot for the help guys. :D

The Wii version of PES uses RTS style pointer controls to let you move multiple players at once. So you can set up certain guys to make runs and clear space and then move someone else into that space while you control the player with the ball with the analog stick, then point exactly where you want the pass to be into that open space with whatever lead distance you want.

Here's some example vids from a few years ago:

Offense
Defense

Why more sports games aren't trying to think of alternate controls like this is baffling, seeing as how this has been done for PES Wii a few years now.
if the controls are like that then to me that's ultimate footie game. One thing I hate about PES/FIFA is how the players without the ball move around, they don't exploit the open spaces sometimes don't make any runs, so you gotta hold the ball and wait for the damn AI to react, and once it does the opposition will have probably close down all the available space.

if you can also control the passes with the pointer, then thats pretty awesome.

WC 2010 for PS360 will probably give you the best WC atmosphere.

For the best footy sim, take PES PC.
For the best footy simcade game, take FIFA 10 Wii.
For the best footy arcade game, take Mario Strikers Charged.

You can get PES2008 or 2009 on Wii for pennies now, if you're not much of a fan of the genre (I'm not, to be honest) then you can have fun with it without worrying about the incremental yearly updates.

Do people still play those online? That's my biggest concern about buying sports games "late". The diehard fans will likely have moved on to the next year's version.

Does PES PC have the Wii-style control scheme? Seems like an obvious thing to implement with a mouse.

The Gaming Access patch for the PC version of PES is head and shoulders above anything else out there. They added a ton of teams from leagues all over the world.

If your PC can handle it, it's the way to go.

How is career / manager mode in FIFA? I wanna take some shitty squad into the big time.

Someone last page mentioned PES accomplishes this quite well, but it sounds like FIFA is the better game...

PES has that side of the game locked up with the master league. Even if it is the same old master league.

Well now I'm torn :/

Sports games are always scraping the bottom of the barrel for new features to roll out yearly anyway... why doesn't EA get its shit together and include a similar single player mode? Even if it were bare bones year 1, iterate on it for a few years and it could be gold.

Negative.

FIFA 09 PC tried to copy PES Wii's control scheme with the mouse but it was rubbish.

For real. The worst is when you play a guy, they beat you, you rematch and win and they quit before the stats register.

If someone quits on you mid game it should register as a 3 - 0 victory for you. I've had a number of people quit on me mid game and that has happened nearly every time and I'm fairly certain the times it didn't were just legitimate problems with the connection.

Fifa is the better game. I've played the full versions of both games for the past 6-7 years, and swapped between both as I see fit, and right now Fifa is where it's at. My past allegiances:

PES3 (PS2)
PES4 (PS2)
PES5 (PS2)
PES6 (PS2)
Fifa 08 (PS3/360)
Fifa 09 (PS3/360)
Fifa 10 (PS3/360)

A lot of people seem to refuse to switch between the two, regardless of how much better one is than the other. "FIFA is shit", "PES is shit" "rah rah rah". But that's not a problem for me. I play whichever game I think is the best.

To summarise the recent versions of both games; Fifa is more of a footballing sim and whereas PES is more 'arcadey'. Fifa has better/more stadiums, more teams, a lot more liscences, more leagues, better graphics, better sound, better animations, better online, better/more game modes, more realistic gameplay. PES has better player faces, better customisation, better Master League/manager mode, Champions League, arcade style gameplay.

This is true for so many people even if they say "FIFA is shit," "PES is shit."

That's true. I should probably point out that I'm in the PES is shit category at the moment, but I'm not limited to either (and neither are they mutually exclusive).

None. Save your money for PES 2011 and register on FIFA.com to play the full World Cup mode of the free to play FIFA Online.

I'm hearing good arguments on all sides. Wouldn't you agree that the best way for me to decide would be to sample each of the games myself? I might have more questions later even after I played them. I can't believe that I completely forgot about the PlayStation Store though. :lol

Bear in mind that demos could be a bit misleading though. At least for me personally. I thought the pes demo was where it was at. Fifa, I think, is the better football game. But like I said before, master league on pes is well... the master league on pes.

I see that you don't have wii, but I'll add a +1 to those who like pes on wii.

edit: and just to add more confusion, the world cup demo is a significant step up from fifa 10, and will probbably set you up better for fifa 11, as well.

Yeah unfortunately I think the demos for all games are misleading. I think that's just a very weird habit for football games -- final versions can differ markedly from the demos. At least you'll get a general flavor from them though.

(fwiw I'm currently playing and loving FIFA World Cup; the World Cup atmosphere and online modes really add a lot)

So after playing all the demos...

World Cup 2010
- Impressive character models. I thought it had the best character models of the three demos.
- Excellent presentation values. Definitely felt like it had the best atmosphere.
- Loved the menu music. Gives that World Cup type of vibe. :D
- Controls are easy to use.
- As for gameplay, I can see what people meant when they said it plays like FIFA 10 almost. Honestly almost feels like FIFA 10 lite.
- Animations are smooth and in good variety.
- Good commentary, adds to the exciting atmosphere.

FIFA 10
- Character models resemble NBA LIVE character models so much. And I hate LIVE. -.-
- Animations feel more herky-jerky and not as smooth as WC10.
- Fairly good presentation values, but still needs more to be on par with WC10.
- Same controls as WC10. Simple and easy to use. Do any of you recommend a different control scheme?
- Question: How are the Be A Pro: Seasons and Virtual Pro modes? They sound tempting, but usually means they're too good to be true.
- FIFA 10 seems to have A LOT of different modes you can play. Is this just an example of quantity over quality?

PES 2010
- Character models, textures, and design make the game look a little too arcade-like for my taste, almost like plastic models.
- Animations feel about the same as FIFA 10, but the game did seem to have more of a variety of animations for the players.
- Everyone has been telling me about this Master League feature that puts PES higher to them compared to FIFA. Could anyone give me a brief summer about this feature?
- No commentary in demo. Can't comment too much about the presentation. :(
- Controls are different than FIFA and WC, so kinda threw me off at first.
- What exactly do the "special controls" mean? Does that have to do with what moves you can execute when you have the ball as a player?

Am I missing anything else that is particularly appealing about any of these titles individually?

I wanted to ask about the create-your-own-plays feature. It looks like an awesome feature that I've wanted implemented in NBA games for years now. Is there any substance to it?

As of right now, I feel like I'm leaning toward World Cup 2010... then maybe buying FIFA 2011? I really don't know, because I want to play with teams like Chelsea and play in different leagues than just the World Cup. I assume in WC2010 you can only play through the World Cup? Still a little divided on this issue... Wish they just had a discount pack where you can buy them all. :lol

Damn son, you need a better pair of eyes! :lol But seriously though, WC2010 is all you need right now, enough to tide you over till the new footie games (from both Konami and EA) come out.

It's really hard to say... when you play them all back to back. :lol I remember there was something weird with how the players moved around in FIFA 10. I did notice in PES that there were apparently some extra animations thrown in like a player grabbing the post to stop himself from running into it, or another playing running into the back of the opposition's goal and kicking at the net after missing the goal. I thought all this was pretty neat because I don't think I noticed that kind of variety in FIFA/WC.

I honestly might just stick with WC2010 since the WC games obviously only come out every 4 years. Might as well enjoy this one while this WC is still going. :D

On that, does anyone know a place where I might be able to find it under $50? Tried Amazon and Ebay. :lol

Thanks again for all the help guys. I'll jump in the PES and FIFA threads when the 2011 editions hit the market.

FIFA WC 2010 is the right choice anyways. its a great game and you got the fever right now.

look around for some deals. hm it was on sale for 40 at a bunch of different places recently... not sure if its still on sale though.

Just ordered FIFA WC 2010 used from Amazon thanks to this topic. $41. Plan is to play it a lot over the next few months, dump it on Goozex before it loses all its value. Then pick up FIFA 2011 this fall :D

This is my first soccer game ever, and my first traditional sports game since the Genesis.

Somewhat related, Amazon wearhouse deals are... great deals:

http://www.amazon.com/Video-games-Products/b/ref=sv__1?ie=UTF8&node=1294448011&me=A2L77EE7U53NWQ

The titles are used, but the orders are fulfilled by Amazon themselves, so they are guaranteed to be in working order. Mario Galaxy 2 for $38, Alan Wake for $40, etc.

dont forget to try out Captain Your Country mode offline. ive been having a lot of fun with it recently. i made my way to the cup and im kicking some but right now.

If you have a PS3 either go with World Cup 2010 if you want to play as the national teams (US, Germany, etc) or wait for FIFA 11 if you want to play with the MLS and Premier Leagues, and see how the reviews are. If it isnt a big leap from FIFA 10, you can just pick 10 up for cheap once 11 comes out. Like someone said though, you can find World Cup for $40 at a few different places if you look around.

don't worry, the next pes will likely support MOVE and have the same control scheme.

Just placed at order for a brand new copy of World Cup 2010 on Amazon for $46.99. I had some $10 promotional gift card that I had no idea about, so that was a nice surprise. Can't wait. :D

The PES 11 trailer I last saw looked fantastic. As it stands though, I think WC10 plays better than Fifa 10, but IMHO it's worthless compared to Fifa 10 as you can't play with clubs or do manager mode. I tried some version of PES a few years back and really really didn't care for it. I'm going to download the demo for 10 now though, and see if there's anything worthwhile. Not having been spoiled by the supposedly better masters league, I think everyone is being a little unfair to manager mode in Fifa. It really is an excellent single player experience. They definitely need to fix a lot in it, but overall I found it fairly satisfying.

Also, what's the deal with ultimate team? Does anyone here use it and like it? The whole idea seems stupid to me, and the trial was pretty bad.

OMG. YES.

Like a beaten wife, Blaburn never fails to defend PES even to the point of blaming himself for not liking the games obvious flaws. FIFA has changed, it has learned from it's past and will never hurt you again Blaburn. When you're ready i'll help you through the rough transition but it's for the best. PES won't change, the game you once knew is no longer there.

I prefer pes for split-screen action. I'd rather play fifa single player tho.

Does world cup 2010 includes clubs ? euro2008 didn't had clubs, kinda disappointing.
:lol

That was a joke right?

Also World Cup games don't have clubs.

I think he mean't two player modes. But it really doesn't make much sense. If you prefer one game play style over another, I don't see how it will change when you play against a friend. Maybe he means that pes is more arcadey, fluid and 'fun' and the keepers aren't lightning bolt action when it comes to saving. :p

From what I palyed I really can't understand how anyone can still recommend PES on HD consoles. Konami totally missed the boat.
