Wow that's pretty good. Hopefully things will pick up. Or maybe the defending really is better.

Probably need to see more matches though. That Canada China match was a horrible way to open a tournament.

I've only been watching this one for 30 minutes but it seems more entertaining at least

China's tactics definitely weren't helping so we'll see how it goes in the other fixtures

A bit unrelated and off topic here, but... I never understood how the USA can be at the top of most sports competitions (like the olympic games) yet their male soccer team isn't that good. The women's soccer team is amazing, but I'm disappointed that their male team isn't as good. If anything, in my opinion, good ol' US of A's male team should be up there among Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Argentina.

It's not the most popular sport in the US. So resources...players...development, etc are focused on other sports first.

EDIT:
And the system.
College players get out at age 22.

By age 22, most world class players....are already world class.

I was surprised they didn't put the game on Halifax if they wanted games for that eastern part.
Yea true. I guess they wanted the games spread out and not have two cities in the same province.

At least the U.S. Mens team qualifies. Canada is terrible for men's. Only qualified once. :( funding here is a joke.

Football has to compete with American football, basketball and baseball inside USA. Once it becomes at least the 2nd favorite national sport, USA will be big. But for now, we lost a lot of potential good talents for other "American" sports.

The big male footballing nations have like a century of history behind them before USA became even remotely relevant. The USA women aren't that far behind in training, tradition & history... In fact they're not really behind at all.

It has to do with economic opportunities. Things will change in the coming years because the MLS is growing so more youth will look at soccer as a viable path.

There was no professional soccer league in the US in the early 90s! The MLS was founded in 1993 and back then it was very small and the players got paid shit.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but... how come the women's team always does so well? In addition, other sports like gymnastics and swimming are not as popular as basketball and football in the US, but American players will win gold in those two (or can win gold) as seen in the Olympics. I think the US has everything to be the World Cup champion but not enough interest and passion like Brazil or Argentina.

And that too. Crazy, I didn't know the MLS was founded in the 90's, in contrast Spain, and England had soccer leagues since the 1890's and early 1900's. That's a 100 years of difference, woah.

USA Women's soccer is the most popular women's soccer.
Even in soccer/football countries, the women's teams are not as popular or prominent.

Good game overall but 1st half was better.

Canada and Netherlands will probably be on the next round. But I can see China and New Zealand being tough.

So, I am really disappointed in the Canadian Soccer Association and FIFA's decision to use artificial turf. I know it's a big expense we'd have to take on, but it's not like we had to spend money building stadiums for this tournament. And it's not like grass is that difficult in Canada's climate (unlike Brazil, which had to import grass seed).

Actually we spent money ripping up grass and installing turf in Moncton Stadium.

Just disgraceful.

Yea, NZ deserved a draw at least.

Netherlands defense was great tho, this group will be very interesting. I can see NZ beating Canada and China.

I was at both games. 53,000 people at the Canada game most left after the first game. Atmosphere was good for the first 15 minutes. After that there was actually loud times, just never coordinated so it was lost on TV. Honestly after the initial fever wore off, this was just sloppy bad football to watch in person. Canada got lucky and so did the Netherlands.

Elite athletic talent in the US are more drawn to the other sports first. They usually go towards football, basketball, or baseball.

I am not saying that the best players in those sports would excel at soccer, just that overall talent goes that way. Our youth development systems for those sports are far more entrenched and have way better financial backing. US Soccer and MLS are trying to play catch up with youth academies and what not, but it's really hard to compete with college sports and Minor League Baseball.

Soccer has potential in the US to blow up. It's already the 3rd most played sport in the US and it's ahead of football in total participation. Soccer participation takes a big drop between junior high and high school when male players have the option to move on to football/baseball/basketball etc. But for kids under 14, its probably the most played sport in the US. Soccer just needs to find a way to bridge that gap to keep participation up after junior high

Well the US has a population of over 320 million, there's lots of athletes to go around. Eventually we'll break out in soccer, it just requires our youth development system to put down roots and become as extensive as it is elsewhere. I mean, they found people like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at a very young age and were able to direct them into youth development programs, this is something completely absent in the US right now.

Not enough competition in the USA.

That's the reason why even small countries like the Netherlands can be competive because they can send their talents to the best leagues.
Either you improve the MLS which will take decades or you send your best talents to Europe.

This was perhaps the worst weekend to start the tournament... we had yesterday the UEFA Champions League final, throughout the weekend a lot of international friendlies for the men's national teams, and also Canada F1 Grand Prix is today... a lot of events to compete with the Women's World Cup. :/
