I agree with the Brazilian commentator: "Andrade is like Robinho, she show the skills but can't pass the defenders." She wasn't effective.

lol dang.
I'm inclined to agree.

But isn't that a disservice to Robinho a bit? I mean, when we was on, he could actually do things. Andrade? eh.

Colombia played well. It was a shame they had to go down to 10 players.

So was that red card deserved? I agree with the second PK though.

LOL Abby Wambach. Before the World Cup started, she was not one of the five players I would choose for a penalty shootout. Can't believe Lloyd didn't take that first one.

Holiday finally benched and Rapinoe finally getting some rest next match.

I thought Alex Morgan was the best USA player by far. Becky Sauerbrunn made some sweet tackles though.

woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo leggoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Alex Morgan is life

Yep she is. She just needs a better team around her tho.

She can dance but the decision making on the ball is awful. So many touches yet she isn't effective in moving the ball forward. I dunno if this is a result of coaching, the surrounding team, overconfidence or all 3.

Now i see the Brackets and notice if the US wins against China they face France or Germany in the Semi, the dream is if it's Germany, i am 100% positive of that.

She doesn't look up when she plays at all. Multiple times she went for the far more difficult take-on against bigger, stronger, better positioned defenders instead of the simple layoff for her teammates.

I don't see this U.S. team beating Germany. France has looked less convincing.

Probably all three. The Colombian team did seem to switch off a lot, but then Andrade does look like she has let the hype get to her.

Robinho has a better reputation outside Brazil. lol Yeah, sometimes he could do great things. The problem is that he talks too much and isn't as good as he thinks.

Lloyd skied her PK in the World Cup Final a la Sergio Ramos. Wambach made hers. #neverforget haha. But actually though, isn't Wambach usually automatic from the spot.

I'm glad Holiday is out...but Brian is likely coming in. Or Boxx. So...eh. Hopefully O Reilly will come in even though Rapinoe is better.

I wish Press would. GO. She did in that goal against France and it was great. What happened since then

Press, Morgan, Leroux need to watch that Bachman Swiss player. Or Le Sommer in France's 3rd goal last game. When you have speed and skill. Just go at players.

People keep bitching about how much the US sucks but they just keep winning.
Also only 1 goal scored against them all tournament.

The makings of a good player are there but damn, just wasteful with the ball. Lack of confidence in her teammates was a thing but I also think she is too confident in her ball handling. You just need to put the defender off balance. She wasted so much time playing with the ball that the defender was able to set their position and then the play was just dead.

by the time women's soccer gets its own Thomas Mueller, that's when you know the sport has gotten to where it should be.

Mitts said ideally she would want Johnston to move up to CM to replace Holiday and Rampone to step in a CB.

um, what?

Johnston's touch and passing is no where good enough to take over the game at MF.
Passing unpressured out of the back is completely different and harder than:

- receiving a ball in the midfield with people coming at you and making a good decision
- having a good first touch. People's first touches disappear when they're under pressure like that.

Weird commentary.

Anyway, Ellis sounds like she doesn't what she's doing.
One of the question askers sounded exactly like Donovan. Strange haha.

EDIT:
And what is Morgan Brian?
Like, is she offensive or defensive? A good passer? Fast? Nope, not fast. Not a good tackler from what I've seen. Like what is she?

EDIT:
ugh, i'm done. Too much

The Improvement in the woman's game has been good as the years go on. They are getting there. I think there has been a lot of quality so far in the tournament. But yeah they have a ways to go still.

O'Reilly on the wing. Brian or Chalupny in central midfield.

How I wish our strikers played more like Le Sommer. Love her.

It's amazing seeing Christi pierce rampone on TV. I graduated a year behind her at high school and watched her games. She was amazing back then. I played 12 years of soccer myself

Mitts probably said that because Johnston was a midfielder in college. But lets be real here. There is no one on this USA roster good enough to take over the game in midfield. And there is no way I'm fucking with our center back duo.

I think Brian played as a CAM or box to box midfielder in college. She's mostly been played on the wing or as a holding mid on this national team. :lol :(

Oh does Chalupny play there as well? I guess I'll take Brian. I'm not sure I trust many others to be able to recieve the ball in the midfield and find a pass. Brian at least did that I guess.

Yeah. Le Sommer is skillful. She takes what the defender gives her.
Like this: https://youtu.be/etEFLQER6ZY?t=56s

Recieves the ball. Is at a standstill so she doesn't have any momentum. Instead of passing it back because you "should" she notices the defenders are not good. So she takes it and creates a goal. Starting with her back to them completely.

Why can't Morgan, Press and Leroux do that? They're not as skillful but I'm confident they're faster in terms of top speed than Le Sommer. They can blow by people if they'd try. Press did vs France once and it was great. They also need to shoot more.

So frustrating.

Yeah. But wasn't almost everyone on our team a striker or some attacking position in college? Even Hope Solo
They were just better than everyone else. O Hara was a striker.
So yeah I wouldn't trust them on the bigger stage. Yeah, even our good CMs haven't taken over.

That's also piss poor defending from Korea.

Plus the defenders weren't really pressing. You won't see that against the U.S. because they know U.S. players don't have the technique to punish them for a dumb challenge. That's what world class technique buys you. Respect.

That game may have been largely depressing, but there were some positives to take away:

* Welcome back Alex Morgan! She was fantastic. She earned a penalty and drew a red card, scored a goal, and had numerous gorgeous touches and passes. She was in 2011/2012 Destroyer of Worlds mode. With every other member of the vaunted forward crop underwhelming, the US needs her to stay in that zone.

* Lauren Holliday has been playing so poorly as of late, Morgan Brian could be an upgrade. I fully expect to see, a week after the World Cup, the headline "Report: Lauren Holliday played with injury in the World Cup." She looks nothing like her normal self.

* The defense has been amazing. Becky Sauerbraun and Julie Johnston might be the best center backs in the world. Megan Klingenberg has been steady in defense and useful in the attack. Ali Krieger was a little shaky, but that could be due to having to guess at just what the heck Tobin Heath was doing/going to do.

* Hope Solo is still the best goalie in the world.

That defending isn't that much better than the other mid tier teams at this tournament. (Like Colombia or China). The issue is, not many players run at the defense with confidence. They usually pull up or stop for some reason. Or telegraph what they will do.

I think on the USA team, a few players can do that. Lloyd used run through people but dunno anymore. But Press did this against France. Not France's first choice CBs but still better than some of the bad teams' CBs we've seen so far I would say.

what happened to that? ^^

EDIT:
I agree Oozer3993. Hope is the best in the world, yeah. I'm not even sure why some say "one of the best". Who comes close? Angerer? not anymore. McLeod? She's alright. Bouhaddi? lol. Barnsley? no.

Okay I stand corrected. That is horrendous defending.

Chalupny is actually a midfielder for her club. I've seen her play and she's a lot better in the midfield than she is at fullback. Her lack of speed isn't exposed like it is on the flanks.

Why did you have to bring up Le Sommer? I'm going to start gushing about her now. The thing I love about her is movement off the ball. Often, you'll see France's wingers and a central midfielder higher up the field than Le Sommer because she is running to the half-line to receive passes. Sometimes even Amandine Henry, a defensive mid, has the freedom to move way up. Le Sommer's hold-up play is just brilliant. She really helps the midfield get involved in the attack. France's midfield is already amazing without her, but I think Le Sommer has an important role in the possession game that France plays. There are so many other qualities in her game like her vision and touches on the ball, but I'll stop now. :lol

Yes, a lot of people on the USWNT were forwards in college. Why does US Soccer keep bringing the same type of players onto the national team...

People keep bitching about how much the US sucks but they just keep winning.

Brazil was going exactly like that. Except that they didn't receive any goal before losing to Australia. Step up your game, USA, you have a hard route ahead.

Holiday has been playing like this for at least 8 months now, going back all the way to World Cup Qualifying. She's an attacking midfielder being asked to play as a holding midfielder. Her performances are just uninspired and she looks miserable out there. Despite her poor play, Jill Ellis insists on using her in every single match and using her out of position. It's so frustrating to watch.

On Krieger, she recieved a concussion in April. At the beginning of the year, I would've said she was a world class right back. She hasn't looked the same since the injury, and I'm not talking about the headband she wears now. :(

I agree with everything else in your post.

If Wambach starts the next two games, then Ellis needs to be fire as soon as they lose to Germany. Leroux and Morgan would wreak havoc for any back 4. I'm getting tired of seeing Wambach lumbering into the box waiting for a cross that she can never put on on net.

Wambach should not even be in this World Cup.

At this point it's just sad, she looks dead tired by minute 30 and wastes a lot of chances because her team mates still pass/cross it to her.

Good comeback by England last night, including a stunning strike by Bronze and a towering captain's header. But I don't know why we spend at least half of every game playing terribly. First 45 minutes yesterday we couldn't string together a passing sequence or get a shot on goal.

We'll lose to Camera so I'm not celebrating too much.

Andrade is fucking class.

Shes shit.

No point showing off your futsal skills if you cant fucking do anything with it. Use it to take players on or hold for an opportunity to pass, I never once saw her get anywhere or do anything productive with the ball except show off some before immediately losing it.

If I was her coach I'd have told her for that shit back in the game vs France.

Ah welcome to English world football...

England's Lucy Bronze told me today on facing Canada, "the Queen's on the coin for a reason."
Isn't Elizabeth II the Queen of both countries? I don't see Bronze's point here, they both kneel before the same Queen, it doesn't make any team special.

England colonized and own Canada. Is the joke, anyway.

Anyway yesterday left me totally deflated but now I'll spend all energy on cheering France to a win over Germany.

:lol

I expect more from England players. That's kinda lame.
Yea we are a commonwealth country like Aus and NZ but still. Jeesh

Still salty from losing that exhibition match I suppose.
