Fighting Games Weekly | Dec 30 - Jan 5 | Rest in peace, Nelson "Remix" Reyes

All the tester footage I see for Ky players is so shit, I could probably find dirty shit and play better than them in less than an hour.

Look, why the heck are Potemkin and Zato-1 in.
They're supposed to be dead.

Bridget is the most popular and he's alive.

Darkstalkers will be odd. Morrigan was fundamentally changed for the better for Marvel, and she will never feel the same.

The UMVC3 Morrigan is one of the most wonderful character designs in a fighting game of the past generation.

She came into a game which is dominated by rush down and flipped the script. She controls an important part of the meta game that is playing out now. If Niitsuma planned this he is a fucking genius.

Whatever the case UMVC3 goes down for me personally the most creative mind bending fighting game I've ever played. The freedom, the movement, and creativity made me fall madly in love with it. So much so I pretty much ignore other video games.

Marvel characters never feel like their main game counter parts though with the exception of well the marvel characters.

Darkstalkers doesn't need a character that can do what she does in marvel

it already has phobos/huitzil LOL
They rarely get fundamentally new tools that change the basis of their playstyle. Who else besides Morrigan got that treatment? No one, I say.

Uh you did notice Pot is mostly all robotic now right? He wasnt before.

And most endings either have eddie dying or someone taking him and experimenting on him. Probably has to do with the later.

what the clone and the flight cancels? Clone was good, flight cancel was stupid. Hensienko got as many changes as well.... ALL NEGATIVE LOL

Is that how you are in SF? Do you consider yourself to not have a main?

No. These days I wouldn't say I have a main since using whatever character depends entirely on my mood. Like right now I like using Fei and I'm using him a lot before he gets nerfed to hell. You don't see me using him a lot on PSN because of the differences in input lag and PSN online lag adding even more to that. I can do his stuff perfectly fine on the other platforms.

Darkstalkers is another one of those games where I enjoy using a majority of the cast. If it were a lot more active, I'd be streaming and playing it more often.

Fuudo playing Dan

insert Kreygasm here.

Man, those guys are playing random select online for like 16 hours, and we finally got to see Fuudo playing another characters!
His Dan is actually good, and he's good with other characters as well, such as Rose and Gief

Seems like the only big stream is Topanga. Was hoping somebody would do a story time type stream tonight just to relax and ring in the New Years.

Just saw the presentation. Yeah, I'm with Busaiku. It's a parochial presentation, which can make one feel cheated if certain things aren't elaborated on or other things skipped over: but it's ultimately being blown out of proportion. There's no argument because there's no premise. There's no data or statistics because there's no attempt at a demonstration to sway the viewer. There's few value judgments because the presentation isn't premised on any moral agenda. It's just two people from MIT going "Hey, so, in case you didn't know; Fighting Game subculture is a thing. Here's what it looks like."

People are just being overly sensitive to what's in the presentation because it's another media spotlight on the community that doesn't consciously paint it in the brightest light. It's unfortunate they didn't go out of their way to talk about some of what they thought were positive aspects of the community to balance out the Cross Assault stuff, but… *shrug*. You could argue that the FGC deserves better representation at an institution like MIT than that, but it's going to take someone from within the community to achieve that. The potential positive side to this is that the FGC gets some exposure at MIT. Maybe that will inspire someone else to do something more substantial.

The thread regarding this video on SRK was closed for good reason.

Who's gonna be on PSN AE tonight?

What do they say?
It isn't addressed in Patrick's article or Art's response (which is what I responded to).

My mistake it was actually right near the end. When I originally saw this I followed a timestamped link to twitch, but watched it from the beginning yesterday, got mixed up about the order they said things in.

Basically their whole point about the FGC having more black and latino players due to lower entry costs (poorer people), who strongly defend their right to sexually harass women because it's part of their culture. They're taking one isolated incident and making it look like a typical thing that defines a worldwide community.

Could you timestamp this please? Must've missed it.

Yes, and it's (the cultural divide) a point I have brought up, which you quoted about Ultradavid addressing the same things and all that, they don't have enough research, and so on.
The women thing isn't based on one incident, Cross Assault was a focal point for them, but they also indicated the lack of female players, as well as stream/forum behavior in general.

I've seen plenty of female players at tournaments. Not everything is streamed in this day and age. So you don't get to see everyone's pool matches.

Stream / forum behaviour is fucking terrible regardless of what Video game community we talk about.

I've been in freaking speed run twitch tv rooms where stream monsters (AKA Anonymous people on the internet) are saying some of the most sexist, racist, homophobic crap it does not mean anything because in my head I know it's not the speed run communities fault people are jack asses.

Stream or forum monsters should never be considered as main examples of a community since anonymous people on the internet are fucking stupid most of the time. Only reason Gaf is civil is because of the hard work the mods have done to rid the forum of filth. You don't think we have seen our fair share of racist, sexist, homophobic, etc people on this forum? Big difference between say Gaf & SRK is that SRK simply does not moderate on the same sort of level or have the mod power to do so.

Here's the player list for Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Version 2012 at NEC XIV.
Granted, there may be some names I'm assuming to be male/female names, but from the list of 176 players, there are only 2 that I can clearly identify as female.

Err this can't be used as proof of anything. Since it does not state specific gender in the google document.

But, regardless the women I know that play fighting games in my local community don't even play SF...they play KOF and Tekken. All of them don't use "Girly" nicknames so yeah if we were going by names alone that means my local community has no female players at all.

I've been to Singapore before where the women prefer playing A.E and they go fucking hard at it.

End of the day as a whole in offline competitive video games males greatly out number the females however things are already starting to change more and more females are showing up and entering. People forget video games for the longest time were seen as a boy only hobby and were treated that way by these big corporations.

P.S Lets have a look at all the female players in the international dota 2 tournament from the invited teams.

Tizoc better back the fuck up im makin' that thread come august

Right, I'm definitely making a lot of assumptions on my end.
And different areas will have different demographics. They based it on their observations, which is why I'm saying it's limited.

Again, at no point do they make the claim that other competitive gaming communities are any better, they state that Starcraft is the same thing.
This isn't the narrative they're trying to push, and because some people are seeing it that way, they perceive the message to be more negative than it actually is.

Could you timestamp this please? Must've missed it.

Their summary makes it all pretty clear.

So the FGC has a lot of good points, they're a really high energy infectious community. They have a lot of passion for what they do which is really great and watching them play at high levels is really fun and it's not just who has the most reflexes there's room for strategy and mind games too. But there's a section which values meritocracy has overwhelmingly masculine player ranks.
Yeah like even though there's ethnic diversity like we said, the one tournament that we attended had only 2 female combatants. I was one of them and only entered as like a joke, so really there was only one. Out of... 100 people? Over 100?
And they're really defensive about other gaming communities, a lot of fighting game players view esports as kinda like sanitised and corporate and they're like "no I wanna be able to sexually harass people and swear a lot. So I don't want to clean up my act."
Yeah and the idea that sexual harrassment is somehow part of the FGC while being really welcoming it's also part of the FGC.
Again no-one really compared notes on that.
Aris had a really "good" quote during the cross assault thing where somebody asked him "could you have fighting games without sexual harrassment?" And he's like "no, fighting games without sexual harrassment is starcraft." Or it's fighting games, whatever. All of these things encourage really bad exclusionary behaviour especially to women.

Their whole presentation is basically:
-i don't understand fighting games
-FG players are stupid and poor and ethnically diverse
-FG players disrespect women.

That's "everything you always wanted to know about fighting games."

This has nothing to do with their claims I was just pointing it out to you. You can't use that google doc as proof of anything.

These two presenters honestly half assed a university presentation. Still I like CPS was very annoyed by the blatant misinformation & racism displayed in a fucking academic facility of all places by these two.

Pointing out how demographics might be different due to socioeconomic factors prevalent in the US is not racism.
When the barriers to entry are lower, it is easier to achieve greater diversity.

I can't believe you guys are arguing this.
You're taking something that's a positive and making it into a negative...
