Film-score GAF, I have a game to play.

For those of you that love film music, I have a game.

I can't play a lick of piano. I can't read sheet music to save my life because I can't remember which key is which. But I sure as shit know which key is which on my computer keyboard. And with that, I give you Virtual Piano.

You can find a few bits of sheet music online for virtual piano, such as The Godfather theme:

osDdsDsds OPo
iOad
iOas
tYPO oPOO oort
ssaP dsOo
oPoi
iOio
PosDdsDsds OPo
osDdsDsds oli
ssaPdsOo
tYPO oPOO oort

I've found most of them to be completely garbage or wrong. Plus they didn't have any of the melodies I was looking for. So in my downtime (read: procrastination), I started sounding out certain film motifs and melodies and writing them down. Because while I don't know how to read sheet music or play the piano, I've always thought I had a pretty good memory for scores.

The Game
So the game I propose is recreating melodies from film or TV or whatever by ear, and having GAF guess which film it's from. You might not get it exactly right, but it might be close enough for somebody to recognize. And people might even suggest where they think it could be improved.

The quick 'How to Play/Write melodies' key:
virtualpianokeyaalia.png
NOTE: Capital letters represent the sharp notes

To get the ball rolling, here are some I put together. They're only snippets, but hopefully they're enough to clue in which film they're from.

Film One
This is an easy one. There's sheet music out there for this one, but like the rest, I did this one by ear.

Note: 'l' is a lowercase L, not a capital 'i'

sdfh fdfds | sfh j l k h f gfd

sdfh f ddsfs | f h j | hfd

Film Two

Another one there is sheet music out there for, but the sheet music's tune is wrong godammit. So I made my own.

dfg gfsi o | dfg dfs j h

dfg gfsi | i yiu | y

Film Three

Whoever guesses this film is a cool bro in my book. (lowercase L's, not uppercase i's)

g f g l Jj f | g f l J j f

i u i s Ppu | i u s P p o

Film Four

Whoever guesses this has a soul. (lowercase L's)

H g H g JHhHg | Hg Jg lJHJg

Film five (uppcase i, not lowercase L)

979797979797 r y | ot | trtyuuIuuuyw

Film six

ruaa p oporyu opad ps pa appor
ruaa p oporyu | dp sdp sdortyu

Film seven (capital i's)

app aoIu IIopIrI | u Iopopaf | f a | f a

Film eight (capital i's)

paS p u | paS p u | padS pas poIu

Film nine
(This is one I don't expect people to get, simply because I'm not good enough to do it justice, so it's very short)

o sad[sp] | o fdg[fs] | o jhgs[fs][ds] [sp][ou][tu][t1]

A theme is from television

e tiopp | sio pp | etio p P p | dso pp
p Psd s | f s | etoi ui

Have at it, GAF. Quote the person you're guessing and try not to use sheet music you've found as that would rob the challenge and fun from the game.

shire theme from LOTR?

Not from a movie, see if you recognize it though, added a little variation to it from the actual piece

The TV show is Band of Brothers, film six is on the tip of whatever organ control my theme music memories, it drives me NUTS.

Edit: if you can give tempo hints, that would help, like, immensely (though might ruin the fun).

Yeah I might in the future. You got the TV show correct. A hint for film six:
It's animated.

I'm sure its fuck awful but I've tried one as well:

[2E]PEPEPEP[4E]PEPEPEP[2E]PEPEPEP[4E]PEPEpEp[2E]

(equal tempo throughout and entire sequence repeats once more)

Sounds kind of familiar. Can't place it though.

Film Six sounds so familiar but I can't put my finger on it. Ffffff

[sf] [dg] [fh] [gj] [hk] [jl] [kz] [hk] [jl] [hk] [gj]

(should be right, if so it's instantly recognizable, it's all two note chords)

For those still trying to get six, I'll spoiler it:

And three is a pretty cool film too!

Empire of the Sun

MOON?

edit: Dream by Akira Kurosawa, the part with Van Gogh. The TV spot for Halo 3 too.

edit2: Ok, it was actually moon?

Heh, I wasn't actually close, I can't even remember the theme from that film.

Anyway, was trying to get something else, got frustrated (i'm getting musically retarded or something) and went with something super easy -

Edit: That's a capital I

oooYPoYPo dddDPIYPo

I might be a bit off there, but for real, I'll be shocked if people don't pick it up immediately.

^ Imperial March, of course. :p

Keyboard sucks for this, can't do chords with the shift key, but oh well.

Code:
t Y | yYyE i Yi o i Y t | YytE
t Y | yYyE i Yi o i P s |
d D dsP s o sd D DDdsP s |
d D dsP s o sdD dDg h g J |
g D d D d P s

bonus:
rte t tr0 | 0rte t tr
rte u u y r t e
euyrte

Ah! I had been thinking about doing Schindler's List. Nice one!

Salander - I'm pretty sure I recognize yours, but can't place it.

Which one? TV Series or the long one?

I thought everyone was going to get the TV one easily. The other one? I can understand, but is a very popular theme. Song, actually.
