Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo is UP!

Short answer: Yes there's a lot more to the game that isn't in the demo.

To clarify, the demo covers what would've been the opening mission in the original game. After this, you'll slowly start getting new team members (whom will each have different combat styles in the Remake). Materia, arguably the core game mechanic of the original, has been confirmed to be in this game and will open up new spells, abilities and summons. There's a lot of potential depth to be explored with this game and impressions have been overwhelmingly positive. Fingers crossed they're right.

In terms of linearity, Maximilian Dood confirmed that the game isn't exactly open world based on the extra time he was given with the game. It'll be linear in nature with some side quests here and there. There's also mini games with significant gameplay changes to look forward to ranging from motorcycle chases to throwing darts.

The meat and potatoes of this game will be the story and combat. Personally I had a lot more fun with the combat in the demo once I started switching actively between Cloud and Barret. Assess the enemy types, fill the ATB bar, use ability, switch to other character while ability plays out - rinse and repeat. Hopefully that helps!
Thanks it kinda does help. I'm gonna buy and try I think.

liked the demo a lot, however I can not condone a purchase for a "Part 1" of a game. Most likely when the whole game is released there will be some sort of collection for it then, Ill pick it up when all parts are together.

Biggest FF7 fan alive. I loved to see return of this story, BUT I can't get on with the combat. Just seems like an action game mashing the button. I wish it was turn-based :(

Try the Classic mode. All the button mashing is automated and all you have to worry about are switching characters and selecting the Abilities/Items as the ATB bars charge, very similar to the original game.

Except it's only available for easy mode sadly

mash the buttons to do low damage attacks but it builds up your ATB bars faster. you should not solely rely on the mashing. use those ATBs.

once your ATB bar is full, you can do a skill/ability/spell. this is where the big damage is done.

honestly its not that different from the turn based style where you have to wait your turn before selecting the next move. except now you can button mash to make that wait less.

plus you can jump from one character to the next while your ATB fills up

I'm one of the biggest FF fans alive as well; and I loved everything! You sure we are playing the same game...? Because I swear I opened up the command inventory many times over the course of the boss battle especially to heal, etc...

I think you just need to accept the fact that RPGs have evolved now. That is life, it moves on and change over time. Either adapt oorperish/move on.

My only complaint about this game is the combat change from turn base to what it is now.

I tried the classic mode and it isn't classic at all. On classic mode the game basically plays itself while you watch and maybe get a chance to put in some commands.

It doesn't help that I genuinely love and prefer turn base combat over anything else basically. I just feel that the original turn base combat with the Material and Summon system was incredibly deep and that has been nerf'd like Tifa's tits to a basic hack and slash.

I know I'm being harsh on the combat change but I don't completely hate it or think it's the worse thing that happened in gaming.

I guess because I played and completely loved a unrelated game called Code Vein where it's a action RPG I'm open to give Final Fantasy VII Remake combat change a chance instead of writing it off like I was initially going to do. The original Final Fantasy VII is the game that got me into JRPG's back on the PSOne so I'm excited for the Remake.

just hold the square button and select abilities once the atb is full, no need to mash. The heart of the combat lies in the atb, not the action part (at least in the demo).

So it turns out that lock on isn't a general lock but is actually character specific! So you can switch to Barret and lock him to an enemy, switch to Cloud and lock on to a different enemy, then switch back to Barret who will still be locked on to the original enemy.

This camera sucks but if they can fix it, the lock on system is really cool.

On the note of lock on though, I find it helpful to use Cloud without lock on; Barret however can make great use of it.

I'm pretty sure holding square for Cloud only uses his roundslash. There's no auto attack like there was in FFXV.

It will work for Barret though.

Took some time with the demo.

The graphics are alright but FFXV seems to have superior graphics for both character and scenario.

The story, Reator 1, boss, enemies, etc are all like original... nothing to add here.

The battle system... that is where I didn't get excited.
The battle is better than that trash FFXV but at the same time is too simple and lacks strategy.
You basically holds square and Cloud will auto attack the enemy (most are bullet sponges), there is nothing more to do in that part... or you block/dodge or you hold square to auto attack with a predefined combo.
When you fill a bar you can use though menu a Special Attack, Magic or Item.
Secondary character is useless until fill the bar and you can use a Special attack, magic or item.
No strategy... just hit hit hit special hit hit hi magic hit hit hit cute.
And the enemies and bosses are heavy bullet sponges so you need to wait a lot of time holding square to kill the enemy lol

I played on normal and except to take a lot of time to kill the boss super bullet sponge I did not feel challenged any time.

There is no deep or complex combos of a action gameplay neither the strategy and control of a turn based gameplay.

It is too simple and lackluster.

I won't buy it.
To be fair I got bored.

It's actually not that simple.

Holding square is different from mashing square and serve different purposes. Cloud's two stances also have different uses depending on the situation.
And the enemies and bosses are heavy bullet sponges so you need to wait a lot of time holding square to kill the enemy lol
If you think they are bullet sponges and if you are waiting a lot of time, then you're doing it wrong. You're not maximizing your damage. All the regular enemy encounters can be beaten in seconds. It's actually pretty easy.

I suggest you play around with it a little more.

Go into the menu and change the camera settings. It's very customizable.
Thank you, however unfortunately it's not an issue the settings can fix.

The problem is 2 fold from what I've experienced.

A) With lock on, the camera does not adjust to the target until the "reticle" is at the very edge of the screen. This makes it so your target is often mostly off screen and defeats one the main reasons for lock on: focus.

B) The camera shits the bed in close quarters. Instead of treating the terrain as a barrier for the camera, at least in battle, the camera should make terrain transparent due to how important spatial awareness of the battlefield is in FFVIIR.

Those are my issues with the camera at least.

The demo looks sick!

Does anyone know if the story is 100% faithful to the original? I don't know if mah poor little heart can take another Aerith death...

I think theyre adding content, so no, i doubt it'll be the same story.

Screw this remake. All they had to do was make the exact same game with better gfx just like Res1 Remake. It wouldve sold, just like the ps1 version has been constantly selling since the launch of the ps3 and pc version. If PC modders attempted to nerf the combat and change the story in the pc version, theyd be eaten alive by the gaming world.

The combat in the remake is some fisher/price silly nonsense.

we need to see how the game turn out with different lightning, different area to properly judge

hey it is a demo, if you want to see something new, need to play the main game as they add new things and this is a remake..ofcourse it will be like original

umm...this section more like tutorial phase...and its just first area..easiest part and simple even in original..its for player to learn and get used to basic gameplay and its a demo, surely wont represent main game and one of main purpose to attract people to buy the main game..in mere less than hours demo i doubt they would put everything there.....in interview kitase said later the stagger system would play important role to take down enemy and we will see his claim in next month.. even the demo and with early enemy and area, the game indeed demand player's strategy, it demand you to utilize the system, the stagger and stuff or you just end up wasting lot of time on enemy..unlike xv you cant waltz in button mashing everything but maybe everyone had their own specific playstyle that they like to ignore the game mechanic. The scorpion sentinel mechanic more like boss combat tutorial for me..look how they laid out environment cover and boss phase, target multiple part and stuff.

i didnt see as simple and lackluster...its just designed to be easier for anyone to get used but also had lot of depth....this is one of combat system that people can immediately get hang to the basic without much effort while didnt sacrifice the complex for simplicity....well we see final product how they utilize the potential..surely there enemy wont be all same enemy and same telegrah as from the demo and surely not all boss is scorpion sentinel with same level, damage and hp.

The combat in the og game for the same opening sequence was Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Potion-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Attack-Lightning-Attack-Attack-Attack

But it was still turn based and resulted in an extremely deep system

This version is for the short attention spanned action rpg gamers.

I am guessing, next parts of the remake will get cancelled and never appear a la half life 3.

Would be excellent marketing strategy to keep series alive forever.

Lol.

Beats me. It would be neat if you could change the cannon story via different actions.

Nah, the new approach they're taking with this game is interesting. This not only feels like an entirely new game, it is.

The combat in FF7R is deep too. You have to make choices with consequences since the ATB gauges are a scarce resource. If you want to play optimally, you have to pay attention and think.

The R stands for retcon. Turn good things into bad things, just like Kathleen Kennedy.

Well, alright then. The game just might not be for you.

I don't think the remake is a bad thing - what I've seen and played so far is very fun and looks promising.

They game should be for me. Im one the fans that was there from the beginning and has been waiting for the remaster since the ps2/early ps3 days. The only reason this series, along with Square as a whole is still trucking, is because gamers like me kept talking about and buying their older games hoping that one day theyll return to old form.

Then we have this trash that makes DMC2 look like an entry of the bible.

How many of the people who like this game, are the same people that bought ME: Andromeda, Fallout 76 and Anthem and Ubisoft games? I beat a massive portion.

I've been waiting for a hint of a remaster ever since REmake came out and I realized they could do that. You're not the only FF7 fan out there in the world.

They also made a lot of new games in the interim, and many of them are very successful. There's a lot of reasons Squeenix is still trucking.

I have no idea, but I haven't played any of those games personally. I love turn based games. Civ and XCOM are in my top 5 of most played games.

There's more to love about FFVII than it's turn based combat mang.

I for one have been wishing for a remake with action based combat since I played the game. Then Advent Children popped up and stoked those fires. I always loved the world, characters, adventures, mini games, and yeah the combat was fun too. As long as materia is intact though and the characters don't stray too far from before, I think this will be one hell of a good time.

For the record though, I feel the depth of this demo exceeds the depth displayed in the same section of the original game. There's plenty more to see for this new game, so if the lack of "depth" is what's got ya bothered, why not keep an open mind while the meta is revealed? Materia and Weapon leveling seem pretty promising.

Coz ive played this game. Its called FF12 and it was a trash combat system. Id rather a last remnant battle system over this nu-gamer crap.

Eh, to each their own.

I love the gameplay loop they've got going on. Switching between each party member and using their differing play styles in conjunction with each other to overwhelm the enemy while also managing magic, item, and ability usage kicks some major ass.

Is there anything you can see them doing to make this appeal to you or is it by its very nature just not your cup of lovingly brewed tea?

Lmao at those thinking SE would ever go back to turn-based combat for any of their AAA projects, and no DQ11 isn't comparable to any FF game's budget and has a limited world wide appeal.

Simply put FF will not have a turn-based system ever again, if you want a SE TBRPG you should look at their AA efforts i.e Bravely Default, Octopath and any of the Tokyo RPG Factory titles.

FF is too main stream and SE wants to keep it that way and turn based (as much as i love it) doesn't bring in new people or rake in the big $$$$.

XV was mediocre but it was a huge success and you can bet it wouldn't have sold as much if it was turn based.

Downloaded this a bit ago at last and finished the demo. The game looks gorgeous on the PS4 Pro, really enjoyed the voice actors and I enjoyed the smaller details, such as:

knocking over barricades and street cones when interacting with them with the sword, I know it's a silly thing but it's kind of neat you can move them.

Am I the only one who takes the time and glanced at the advertisement posters at the beginning? There were a few, such as advertisement for mineral water, spikey hair gel, and such. Thought it was kind of neat.

The music was pretty good, but I was kind of disappointment that there wasn't a summon we had access to like the original FFVII demo on the PS1. Would had been kind of cool to use it and get a feel for it.

The combat is pretty chaotic, I played it on normal. Not sure about the other two modes but I felt like it would had taken some of the excitement away of defeating enemies since normal mode was a bit challenging when you start to face the guard dogs, scorpion bot and shock troopers.

Speaking of the boss, that shit was pretty intense. I realize they probably had to make this boss memorable to get players excited, since it was otherwise a forgettable boss in the original game. It was surprisingly difficult at times but very fun!

Oh anyone else get the secret ending on the demo? I did unintentionally playing it the first time.

After the busy week, was finally able to spend some time with the combat this weekend, and just no-damaged the boss. My thoughts on the overall demo below:

Pros:
- FF7 Remake in HD (This feeling is at the top coz holy-freaken-nostalgia!!)
- Music
- Voice Acting and Dialogue (Certain mannerisms excluded)
- Graphics
- Music
- Combat

Cons:
- Quality of Life
  • Can't use shortcut buttons outside of combat
  • Some buttons aren't as responsive (like secondary character shortcuts)
  • The camera doesn't follow the enemy when using the direction buttons for lock-on switching
I think the combat has that same strategical aspect that the XIII games had, but this also adds 3D movement to the mix making things more complex. So not only do you need to come up with the strategy for the fight, but also need to worry about execution in a 3D space. I guess it's a nice mix of both turn-based and real-time combat. While I prefer turn-based combat more, this hybrid system is quite intriguing and I can't wait to explore this more.

Talking about the characters and the dialogue, I loved the banter between Cloud and Barret. Cloud here seems better than the old morbid one from Advent Children or other projects. Him smiling when Jessie says "That was cool!" felt a little out of character for him, haha.

I also really liked the music in the demo. The graphics were also nice, though I the dithering was annoying. It would be nice if the game was 60 fps, but can't complain being on the base PS4.

Overall, I really loved what I played. The only annoying thing is that I don't have enough time these days to do everything I want to with the demo (like making combat tips vids, try various other strategies against the boss, etc). Oh well!

Anyway, below is the no-damage no-items boss run if anyone is keen. While it wasn't really a speed run, the time is around 2:41.

I was watching Angry Joes demo impressions, and he brought up some interesting things about pricing. Have they talked about pricing for this game yet?, i mean will it be $60 and then you get episode 2 and 3 for free when they are released like other episodic games?. Its not exactly our fault that Square decided to split the game up into 3 parts instead of waiting untril the remake was finished. It would be a bit dodgy to charge us $180 for the 'full game'.

Lol it's a demo guys, a demo of one of the easiest parts of the original game, of course it's going to be 'shallow' given this context. It's meant to be like a teaser. The depth of FF7 will be there, at least up until the section of the original game this covers.

Yeah, Maximilian Dood got to play chapter 2 and he said enemies get way more tough already.

Absolutely. The game is designed to be played in this way.

I was previously looking at Baldur's Gate III to be my RTP combat fix.
But it looks like Squeenix actually nailed it here.
Shame on you Larian!

Awesome skills! I love it.

Question: Is there a reason why you didn't use Barret's Overcharge ASAP at the beginning of the tail laser phase?

Pallas Pallas The game is smooth as FUCK on the Pro! I don't think it'll be different a lot from the vanilla PS4 though
Interesting. I only have a vanilla PS4, and was wondering if I should upgrade to a PS4 Pro to play this game. At first I thought I would need to upgrade to Pro to do HDR, but there's an option for HDR in the vanilla PS4 settings too. Is the Pro implementation of HDR better than the vanilla Ps4?

I would still have to upgrade my monitor though...

Do I really want to spend another $800 for a PS4 Pro and a good HDR monitor just to play this game though? lol

Fuck no definitely not worth it for ONE GAME. Yeah of course its better because it supports higher resolution

No you don't trust me. Keep it for next-gen because at this point its really waste of money
