Final Fantasy fans: how do you feel about FF XIII?

And not to be a downer, but FF hasn't been awesome since FFVIII. I wonder who's living the past.

@_@

FFX, FFX-2, FFXII > 98% of rpgs in existence. FFIX was nice as well, but battles were too slow to make it one of the greats.

Staff-wise FFXIII is being made by the AWESOME team that made the AWESOME FFX-2, so gameplay-wise I expect it to kick much ass and have all kinds of well-implemented fresh ideas. It's just the story/art/characters that I am afraid of.

Maybe when the real main character is introduced, if he looks interesting I'll start getting onboard for the art/characters/story.

To me, there's something missing about this FF. I don't know what it is, but from what we were given it just screams "More Action! Less Story!" I know I could be wrong but thats just how I see it right now.

I thought FFX was pretty average, FFx-2 is the whole spice girl thing...wich downright sucks, and FFXII...uh...cool artstyle i guess.

More like parody of the spice girl, power girl thing. But it obviously flew over some people's heads.

I'm loving it. It reminds me of FFVIII. You can't look at Esthar and say they aren't similar. Also the gun-blade looks awesome. The battle-system looks like it'll be a lot more energetic than it was before, but still keeping the menu-system, and I'm all for that.

I'm way more excited about FFXIII than I am about FFXII.

I'd say it's my most wanted FF ever :p

There isn't enough information out about FFXIII for me to even make a respectable guess.

QFT. Damn you guys are making some completely unwarranted judgements. Most people only saw a 1:10 video that showed appoximately 2 environments (train line, inside the train) and 1 main character but already OMG this game will suck. There's almost no evidence that shows it to be more like FFX, FFX-2, FFVIII or any other so relax with the comparisons. I'm also not crazy about the design of the pink-haired girl as there's nothing truly unique about her look, but maybe that's for the better.

That battle system they showed also barely gives hints about the game. How are the menus navigated, order of actions, etc. is still up in the air.

I may prefer typical Tolkien-esque fantasty, but if Square Enix can developer a great story, plot, and cast, then they can take the setting wherever they like. I had the exact same reaction to FF XII at first, but based on the story and characters, I'm damn excited.

Actually it's more that the enemy guards looked ripped out of FFVII/FFX and looked really lame.

FFXII enemies were too awesome. Can't go back to lame designs for enemies :(

Is there more info on XIII out other than the trailer? Just wondering if I've missed anything because you can't tell a whole lot from the trailer, yet people are jumping to all kinds of conclusions about the game.

I'm cautiously optimistic about XIII, mainly because while I've often doubted previous FFs (especially VIII), once I got to play the actual games I ended up enjoying them (even VIII, which is probably my favorite among the PSX FFs). I felt the same way about X-2, which looked ridiculous, but ended up having one of the most entertaining job/combat systems yet. Hell, I even liked the story to X-2 well enough, although then again X's story wasn't one of my favorites, so I didn't feel "betrayed" by what happened in X-2.

My main concern with what we've seen of XIII so far is the futuristic slant. I had hoped for a return to a more "traditional fantasy" setting. I also wanted to see a big focus on the job system, which is my favorite aspect of FF, but it's still too early to tell what Square is planning with the gameplay in XIII.

Return of the job system would make me a happy man. Since it is the same people behind X-2 maybe we'll see something like the dress sphere system. This time they need to be sure to include dragoons though

I think FFXIII has a lot of potential. Music is being composed by Hamauzu, and it sounded awesome in the trailer. Then there's the Kitase/Nojima/Toriyama trio from FFX. IMO, FFX's story was a huge improvement over FFVIII's in many aspects, so I'm hoping those guys keep improving and make FFXIII's story their best yet. Isamu Long-ass-name, one of the art directors of FFXII, is the art director of this game! So it will without a doubt have awesome art, in fact, the forest scene and the huge sky city reminded me a lot of FFXII's art. The new battle system seems very refreshing, and it's being made by the FFX's and FFX-2's team (CTB and FFX-2's ATB were much better than the old over-recycled, outdated ATB). The animations might look like AC's, but is that really a bad thing compared to the dull animations from previous FFs? Changing the gravity of the battlefield, seamless battle transitions, interactive environment in battles, and up to 11 enemies per battle? Can't wait to know more stuff, but from the little info so far, it sounds awesome.
I also happen to love the idea of a strong gunblade-wielder female and the social rank system (the one where NPCs dialogue will change depending on your social rank, which also seems to hint that the story will be political).

Nomura's character designs are probably the only thing that have yet to impress me. :P And yes, the trailer seemed like the game would focus too much on action, too little on story, but that's only probably because Square does not wants to reveal any story info so far. Besides, half of the "action" in the trailer was gameplay stuff.

It appears to be back to random battles again... That I DON'T like
What made you think that? It was already confirmed that the battle transitions would be seamless.

Oh no u didnt Bebpo :( FFX-2 had a fun gameplay system, but 80% of the missions had no soul in em at all - i finished the game at 100% (had to see the ending) and most missions felt...lifeless. Sure it wasnt linear (i personally prefer linearity in RPGs) but there was never any "driving force" for any of the missions.

As for FFXIII, my biggest gripe, especially after the really awesome looking story of 12, is that the games story is going to be very...hmm whats the word?? simple?? I thought FFX-2 had one of the lamest stories in any RPGs, especially as a sequel to FFX, but maybe thats just me. I just hope Toriyama's team doesnt screw up XIII's story.

It will be released on the PS3, which is a Sony system so I don' care.

Also, for more INRI... I don't care of the series since FFVIII.

FF III to VII are gold, but any other game simply sux.

And at what time are we bowing to our great lord Nintendo's statue today?

Simple is not the best word, as FFXII's story is also simple. You probably mean other stuff, like FFXIII's story being less mature? Less subtle?

I thought FFX-2 had one of the lamest stories in any RPGs, especially as a sequel to FFX, but maybe thats just me. I just hope Toriyama's team doesnt screw up XIII's story.
The FFX-2's staff (including Kitase) had mentioned multiple times on interviews that they never cared much for FFX-2's story while they were creating it, the gameplay was their bigger focus (and that one rocked). Obviously, with FFXIII, they will care about the story as much as your average main FF.

After FFXII, I'm not really concerned with FFXIII. But there's hardly enough to make any sort of judgement on.
I'll still buy it, though. -_-;

They killed lik-sang! People will be boycotting them for at least a few more hours until they forget about it.

my most anticipated game...Ive enjoyed all ffs so far....ffxii first though....oh shit, just remebered lik sang closed down...feck, need to reorder it rat dammit....

Anyway, some of the extrapolations in this thread are bizaar...anyway, it seems like it will have more innovative gameplay than some of the other nex gen rpgs.....no random battles though...I doubt they will be in

Funny things is that people are complaining about innovation...equating innovation with new ips...games such as LO and BD have shown very little innovation so far, and the info has been vague....while the ff stafff have been forth right saying they want the fastest most streamlined battle system...They said they want to shake things up so people will even question if it is ff.... the people who think it will drop all the innovations ff xii made are just talking shit....no proof whatsoever

peace

the next final fantasy looks pretty cool so far but its way too early to tell

as for everybody that hates on the futuristic theme: how many more swords and dragon games do you want. FF stopped being about that over ten years ago. nothing is really cannon now in this series. it constantly changes

I'm very excited for XIII. I love X and X-2 both, so I'm happy that their director is working on this game; I love Hamazu's compositions in X, so I'm sure he'll make an awesome soundtrack; and I'm really intrigued by the pseudo-real-time queued-abilities system the trailer hints at.

Also, I gotta say, "I'm less interested because there's a female lead" is kinda... pathetic. I'm really excited that we get to have a female character in the lead again.

Sallokin said:
In response to the OP, hasn't it been said already that the main character is not the female from the trailer?

No, that was a mistaken translation of an interview. What they've actually said about her is that they wanted to create a female lead character who was like a "female Cloud" -- i.e. tough and pushy, compared to (say) Yuna.

Bebpo said:

It makes me very happy that you have the correct read on X-2 and that you liked it a lot. :-P

Female lead is the best thing so far with this game and I have liked what I have seen up til now. It will be one of the main reasons to pick up a PS3 for sure. (for people that are into JRPG:s that is)

I saw the clip of the game recently, and what I noticed is 'slash slash slash, flashy shit, slash slash ... 10' ... all that for 10 lousy points of damage?

Even if it was a 9,999 points of damage, all that unnecessary fluff will get old and real soon. Here's hoping for the best ...

I didn't know that. If it wasn't for the art direction, characters and story I would have really enjoyed FFX-2.

Anyhow, so far I like the character design (I'm talking about with the female lead).

Am I the only one that's read that the girl shown won't be the main lead? They said something about her just being a character they decided to show the game off with. Here, I found the quote "I wouldn't say that she's the main character. It just happens to be that she was the character that we chose to feature in the trailer. However, it is true that we wanted to have a strong, independent woman as one of the main characters in the game." ~Toriyama

Anyways, I've been wanting a futuristic RPG for a while now, so I'm pretty happy. As long as the battle system is fluid and they have a decent story in place, I don't see how they could screw this up. The game looks like one of the best games on next-gen systems, and I really like the colors and design. (hopefully the rest of the cast won't look too feminine, but I'm not getting my hopes up)

ff13_03.jpg

About the battle-system; I think it's going to be really interesting. It was confirmed that the girl in the trailer can control gravity, so it adds another dimension of difficulty assuming your distance and position from the enemy affects your attacking capabilities. They also mentioned a "time-axis". So that's also another element to throw into the mix.

They said they want to take FFXIII in a new direction,"...in the traditional RPG, the game flow is pretty much the same way. You go into a town, talk to people, go out of town, and enter battles. We want to start looking at that flow and revolutionize it in a way that it may surprise people to learn that this is a Final Fantasy game. I'm thinking it will be an extraordinary new form in RPGs" ~Kitase

I'm really looking forward to what they'll bring to the table. :)

I prefer older-type RPGs but I'm not a zealot for them. The game looks (graphically) fantastic, even though the art design isn't necessarily my favorite and hopefully it has smooth, quick and fluid gameplay.

As others have said, there really isn't enough info out there for me to form an opinion. I do think it's graphically impressive, although I don't particularly like or dislike the art style. It doesn't matter to me whether the lead is male or female.

The next Dragon Quest game is much more on my mind than FFXIII (despite knowing nothing at all about it yet), or even FFXII (no offense at all to FFXII, just really excited for more DQ).

Coop said:
Am I the only person who thinks the main character looks like the two female leads from FF X and FFXII?
They only have like 5 human models. They reuse them for everybody with slight tweaks. That's how production goes on a lot of modeling work, but they've just done a poor job tweaking the models in FF imo.

I'm excited! I'm a sucker for sf RPG's (I prefer that motif to the traditional pseudo-European knights-and-wizards high fantasy), and what I've seen so far puts me in mind of the classic Phantasy Star games. (Especially with what appears to be a female lead character kicking ass - that takes me back to Alis and the gang in PS1. :D ) Since we'll probably never see another 'real' Phantasy Star RPG from Sega, my anticipation for this is running high.

It's FFXIII, I'll buy it. The direction they're taking it is rather unappealing, but I've got over it for other FF games, so... yeah

As opposed to pressing X, watching your characters jump forward, hit an enemy, and jump back for 50 hours?
