Did you tweet #wind? Despite instructions saying you didn't need to for some reason you have to. Also, thew bot likes not to talk but the website is updated so look it up there.
Earth Crystal get and party is:
Monk Thief Berserker Geomancer. Its not that I don't like Geomancer, but some kind of reliable healing mechanism would have been welcome. But thats part of the fun, trying to work out ways round these "mionor" issues. I've got thief so in long dungeons I can make a beeline for the end and if Monk and Berserker keep up the boss killing in world 2 and 3...
they probably won't
Also I'm slightly crazy and tend to give the Monk Berserk for the damage boost.

just played as far as the wind temple, have now received my first job, got scared i was going to be very unlucky

Geomancer means I can grind ABP really easily in the Jachol cave 
Blue Mage is the best of the 6 starting classes as long as you go out of the way to get as many blue magic as you can. Get Goblin Punch and Vampire, put everyone in the back row, roflstomp

i'm just uncertain, as have never finished this game before, mainly because for whatever reason i just found it way to hard.
dunno if the game is generally difficult, or i was just terrible with my job assignment.
i'm guessing the latter, haha, so yeah it being a lottery could work out well for me

The good thing about the Monk class is that you can pretty much steamroll over just about everything in the early game without spending much on equipment. Two attacks + Barehanded Counter for regular mobs, Focus + Counter for bosses. Certainly, that was my experience this year, whereas last year, I had to rely on my lone freelancer to get rid of the enemies that my white mages could do little against.
Of course, without any way to cure, Walse Tower posed a threat to my party, since the enemies could not be KO'd in one shot, while Garula, with no way to confuse it, posed the greatest threat I've faced so far. I started off with Focus punches from all monks, then I devolved to regular attacks. Essentially, I wanted to take down Garula without stopping for anything, and I succeeded, only losing two party members before it was vanquished.
So now for my water crystal job... (pleasenotberserkeragain, pleasenotberserker) MYSTIC KNIGHT! Great, at least I have a powerhouse to replace pick up the slack for Monk in the late-game. I'll still need a utility class in the future, or Ranger or Ninja to enhance MK, but at least I wasn't stuck with Berserker again.

Never even used a blue mage before. I'm sure this will be a learning experience.
Maybe a silly question, but are your menu BGs two-tone (i.e. blue, purple)? If so, how did you do that? I thought they were always monochrome.

Once you go Blue mage you can't go back
And that's the default color for the menu on the GBA version, I'm not sure what the question is?
I got killed twice right before getting the dragon, and both times I didn't have a save since the Wind Crystal.
It's the R3 G0 B7 config, but I think all of them use various tones.
I shouldn't have tried to kill this monster, as it only guards a stupid sword. I had to use the old strategy against Atomos about doing damage and damage. It was more fun using dark spark and lv 5 death.

Hahaha, fuck Berserkers. Especially on this Sand Worm fight where I'm getting countered with Gravity over and over.

Monk/Berserker/Geomancer.
Beat him first try after violently murdering my Berserker.
I feel your pain. I just made though the ship graveyard. I went into the Canal with 50 potions in stock and came out of the graveyard with half of that, even with stealing more along the way.
I am hoping that my water crystal job gives either some more survivability, or more versatility.
So Melvin and company don their traveling cloaks and hats, and decide to go sightseeing.
They meet a nice lady on the beach.
Unfortunately, she develops a nasty sunburn, and has to leave.
They encounter a married couple hiking through the woods, but Melvin's dull stories put them to sleep.

Um...you can't. You only get one Frost Rod that you find in Carwen, IIRC.
Do you have the Ice Rod from Carwen?
If so, break it. It's what I did.
Edit: Oh, and stabbity death to Magissa was fun.

White Mage? If so, get the Healing Staff from Tycoon and use that to heal. Cast protect on everybody and just slug it out. Did you pick up the flail in the Ship Graveyard? That will help too.

Playing through with my girlfriend and a friend of mine. Right after the fire crystal, our parties are as follows:
Me: Knight, Blue Mage, Thief
Girlfriend: Monk, Monk, Thief
Friend: Blue Mage, White Mage, ???
Anyways, my girlfriend is having quite a bit of trouble with Byblos as he protects and she can't break rods. Any suggestions? She's using 3 monks and one back-row Thief with Moonring Blade at the moment. Power-leveled to 22 and is now going for another attempt.
Edit: She beat him with tons of focusing.
