Final Fantasy Five Four Job Fiesta 2012

I'm about to grind out some levels before I hit the Rift for the first time. Am I going to need Flame Rings at all, or should I blow my money on Hermes Sandals?

awww got a knight AGAIN on hard mode :(

was looking forward to a blue mage. Maybe I can donate and get a blue mage hmmm

maybe

Anyone know why my quicksave on FF5A doesn't work? I know it is a legit cart. I'm playing it on a DSL (not sure if it matters, and I don't have a GBA to try it on). When I try it just says "quicksave failed". It'd be nice to have this when I'm out and about.

As far as progress goes, I am
about to fight the airship in W1
with Black Mage, Summoner, Berserker.

Aw man, I'm not that active on these boards and I missed this topic. Is it too late to get in on this action?

I've beaten every FF from IV up past XII except this one. I really have no idea why; I remember playing the crap out of it as a kid, but I don't think I ever completed it. I can recall various parts of the story, like some kind of haunted library in a desert and a certain old man
dying and being replaced by his daughter
, but I'm afraid not much more than that. I want to give this another fair shake, now that I am older and less liable to drop a game I'm engaged in.

That said, this event sounds perfect for me because I am extremely OCD about games like these (Tactics comes to mind) and I feel the need to grind the fuck out of every class. And I don't even really like grinding that much (it's why I stopped playing Diablo III!) so it's essentially an unavoidable process that milks the fun out of the game for me. Community-based restrictions would go a long way towards making this a great venture for me; please let me know if it's not too late to participate.

EDIT: Also, assuming I did participate, what is the best method of playing this? I seem to have lost my GBA version, and I was thinking emulator would be best. Where are you guys getting your ridiculously clean game shots from? Is it the GBA rom?

I'm sure with 45 pages these questions must have been asked a dozen times by now, so any cursory responses would be fine. I'd really like to give this a go.

The fiesta might not be the best way to play this game through your first time. It's more a way of challenging people who've played it before to hey endless unique strategy and new gameplay. I think the job system is much more flat than fft. Rather than classes opening after getting to a certain level. You get them in four phased. It's impossible to miss all but a couple of the jobs unlike fft.

You can enter the fiesta at anytime, it goes til the end of August, simply tweet #reg or #reghard to @FF5forFutures aka Gilgabot to begin. Some people are using emulators others are putting the GBA version into the GC GBA player for the clean streams/images. Play by whatever method is best for you, but if you do end up choosing an emulator don't take advantage of save states, wouldn't be a challenge if you cheated :P

Allows you to play GB/GBC/GBA games on your GC, probably the only reason I never sold the GC

It's a cheap accessory. Picture doesnt show it but it uses a Gamecube disc to run, so make sure if you buy one it comes with it.

For those who've used rangers/bows before, is the Artemis bow or the Yoichi bow better? Yoichi has slightly less damage but has a 30% chance to crit while Artemis does slightly more damage but has a 100% chance to crit on "magical beast". What exactly is defined as a magical beast and how often should I switch?

Start my 2nd hard mode run through.

First class is Black Mage.

Nice, easy bosses and easy grinding.

Went to first town and bought fire, lit, ice and spent all the rest of the gil in potions. Off to the canal.

Destroyed the crab boss with lit.

At the ghost ship area. The black mages made all the random battles easy.

Siren boss. First attacked the alive version. Then killed the dead version with fire.

At the dragon mountain. Ran from most battles and spammed ice on husband and wife. Lost two characters but they were dead.

Flew to Waltz and went straight for the mammoth boss. The mammoth boss detroyed me first go. 2nd go I broke an ice rob and won easily.

Woo 2nd class and my 2nd clas is................................................Knight.

Hmm disappointed, I got a Knight on my first hard mode run. 3/5 runs I've done had a knight in it. Well at least I know I have a good magic class and a good physical class. Good class but just wanted something different like monk/thief/time mage.

Off the fire area. Bought some new spells. Grind a little to get 3 of each rod and some new gear. So fast to kill wolves with multi target fire 2. Grinding for fire rings is going to be much easier.

WEnt to fire ship and ran straight to fire ship boss. Spammed ice 2 and ice rod enchanced ice 2. Easy win but fire 2 did 1hko 2 of my characters.

Got everything fleeing the castle. Just spammed ice two (since I already had the rods equips. Kills death claw before hey could even transform.

Next class is................................Geomancer .

Nice

I have no idea how good this class is but its the first time I've ever had this class and I never used it in my normal playthroughs.

Off to the library.

Killed Ifrit with ice 2.

Killed Biblos with Fire 2.

Used gaia in the library a few times and it kinda sucked. So I just had every spam black magic even the knight.

Story and ship goes to cresent ships sink and got black chocobo.

Head to desert and fought the earthworm.

Earthworm was ok. Just slowly spamed black magic unstill it died.

Trekked through desert/town/ruins and got airship. Destroyed the claw boss with lit 2.

Got airship more story and went to get adamantium.

Spamed ice 2 on turtle boss. and headed to earth fortress.

NExt destroyed all the cannons with bolt 2. Had just enough hp to survive the boss cannons super attack and its drain attack.

Trek through the earth dungeon. Gaia finally become good, eff that it was godly. Wind slash is awesome.

Fought the dragon boss. First try a spamed gaia and the first part died easy. The second part though since I haven't used physical attacks pretty much all game my knight wasn't exactly well set up and the 2nd part was completely immune to magic. 2nd go went two knights with gaia and killed it easy.

Final class.................Bard.

LOL Exdeath does no get a break. 3rd time I got Bard in my runs.

Party of Black Mage/Knight/Geomancer/Bard is good. No synergy at all but a lot of great stand alone skills in Black magic/Gaia/Sing.

I just got the final tablet on my second run (not that I needed it just cause I wanted it) and I have to say the undersea rift or whatever that place is called has to be the most pointless dungeon ever if you don't have a time mage. Nothing of any great value treasure wise (especially compared to Ishitory Falls), the dwarven village if only useful as a shop if it's your first time playing and you don't know about mirage village, and it's a massive pain if you don't have float/geomancer.

With that said now it's rift time for me, shouldn't be too much of a challenge between 2x rapid fire and 2x bahamut.

Edit: Unless I get into the first battle in the desert area as a back attack and they choose to do 3 earthquakes killing everyone but my knight turn one :|

Did I just spend the past 20 minutes whacking Gilgamesh with nothing but a thief knife and kill him without once stealing the genji shield?!

Edit: VICTORY on hard mode

All four classes pulled their own almost the entire run, the only real lamers were ranger pre rapid fire and my Blue Mage Faris who spent half of the final battle berserk :( If I were to redo the final battle I'd take rapid fire off my ranger and give her blue magic. Having only 2 characters who could throw up white wind/mighty guard was a serious pain. Despite the fact Neo Exdeath died faster, I found staying alive easier on my first run because of how good Ribbon is and because I could concentrate my 50% sword dance better then my rapid fire knight/ranger.

Not sure if I'll do a 3rd run, if I do it'll be normal mode. The odds of getting good classes in hard mode seems too high IMO obviously the possibility exist of getting something completely awful like thief/thief/monk/monk.

So I'm having a tough time with Exdeath at the end of world 2. Any advice on beating him down? My party is W.Mage/Monk/T.Mage/Knight. I need to prove I'm not a fraud!!

Why can't red mages at have access to heavy armor. At least a god damn shield!

Shell Haste and lots of healing I suppose.

Just finished my fun run. Quick makes most anything a joke (especially on a Dragoon). Bardsongs (mainly Hero's Rime, Swift Song and Sinewy Etude) mean you'll be doing a ton of damage, especially with a physical party. And Focus makes Monks pretty dangerous, actually.

Will probably try hard mode in a few weeks, I think I need a break.

Shell, haste, and reflect are your friends, make sure your party also doesn't have a level divisible by 3 so you can't be hit by lvl 3 flare. Go White/Time Time/White Monk/White Knight/white. First turn have someone cast hastega and the other 3 cast shell on the 3 characters with the lowest mdef. 2nd turn get shell on your last character and protect on your knight/monk. From that point on melee and cast comet every turn, healing is the priority though and if you don't have everyone with a high enough white level that they can all cast curaga go back to bal castle and grind for it, ditto for your white mage having a high enough level for comet/hastega. If you do that you should be fine, if you want you can also just throw up reflect on everyone and go for a faster agro approach with hi potion/elixir healing, if you want to do that make sure everyone is level 3 divisible so level 3 flare reflects and hits exdeath for 4k.

I would think Time/White + White/Time would be enough for healing. I'd give the Knight Two-Handed and the Monk Focus to quicken the battle.

Lamest party ever seriously, Knight (x2), Mystic Knight and Red Mage.
Four Swords...shame Blue Mage is missing and the Knight isn't green.

I'm almost ready to wrap up play 1. So an interim update:

Does Agility even work on Berserkers? From what I can tell Heremes Sandles don't (at for the first attack)
Assassin's Dagger would be great if it ever activated when the Iron Giant was at full health...
Uh-oh better heal up...

...oh yeah, bone mail.
Time to take on an old fiend...with battle speed 6 :(
Looks doable...damage isn't too bad and the barriers are about dead

Necrohobe himself was a pain though. Gilgamesh took too long to arrive (I couldn't really do damage, Magic lamp was drained, Monk was doing 400 per hit, Berserker took 1 turn every week and I forgot to put Mug on my Thief so "can't escape occurred too much")
Stole his armour...
Ooh, shiny

Magic Lamp recharge.
I've got about 40 Elixirs so I'll have to give things a go sometime. If its wind slash only in the final fight Geomancer might be MVP as it'll be 2000 damage to all targets each time...then again !Mug with Chicken Knife will do ~3000. The Berserker is mostly Genji'd up (I'm keeping Aegis Shield).

I just hope you people playing two or three times don't get sick of FFV and never join YE fiesta again.

I won't give up on fiestas until I get every single job at least once.

When I do I'll even do the legendary four freelancers until I get all the Advance jobs run.

I think I won't do this hard run after all, every job chosen killed my buzz even further and just going around changing jobs is so unfiesta

might just train and pick up shinryu and the other dude.

plus now that vacations are coming, nier is waiting for me

Tried this a few times last night. Once he gets to 50% or whatever he starts doing double attacks with VaccuumWave or a level 3 spell and i get bopped. I'll try reflect but when I do get it off he Dispels often =/. Maybe I'm just too slow. Debuffs don't seem to work on him either?

Do NOT SLOW EXDEATH.

Ever.

Just don't do it.

Put everyone in the back row, protect, shell, haste, blink everyone while healing. Once that is all set up move your attackers to the front row and keep your healers back. Reapply blink when it goes off someone.

Put the Ice Shield on your Knight when you get to his spell casting phase, that is if you don't have flame rings for everyone. He'll eventually cure your knight through that giving you a free turn.

Sweet, thanks! I'm sending the tweet out now, goodbye productivity. But it's for charity, so I'm OK with doing it. Thanks for the advice, too--your call on the GC GBA reminded me that my brother had a wired xbox360 controller lying around for his Steam purposes. I've plugged it in and I'm about to play the ROM on my computer with it. Wish me luck on my first full run of this game!

EDIT: Noooope. Is anyone using VBA for Mac here? I'm running the most up-to-date version, 1.7.5, but the Configure Keys option is grayed out. From scouring the internet, I've found that the solution is to close the ROM and then do it, but the problem is when there's no ROM running the window instantly hides. Seems like a pretty big issue; would I be better off downloading an older version or is there a known fix?

EDIT 2: OK, I'm an idiot. Still relatively new to Mac: the solution is, after you close the ROM, even though the window automatically minimizes, the top bar still has Options in it. Yay, things work!

Even if I "get sick" of it by the time the fiesta starts next year I'll be in the mood for more FFV. Also FFV is easily one of the most fun to replay so it's hard to imagine me ever getting bored of replaying it. Considering I'm going to continue my normal run in a little bit I can't say I'm goingto burn out on the game ever. The only way I'd burn out on the fiesta is if next year I get something too similar to this year.

Perhaps in the future you can come up with a system to anti-request a character like say "#wind #noknight" for people who got knight 3 years in a row. Technically job fair exist but I feel the true spirit of the challenge is random classes, so by going #noknight I'll get a random job from the remaining 5, where as if I'm allowed to just job fair I'm intentionally choosing to break/gimp my game, it's not the same feeling. Also it'd allow people who feel their challenge is "ruined" because they got "Thief/Berserker/etc" to feel comfortable they'll get a class they enjoy.

Glad to hear :) if you need any help feel free to message or post in this topic. My advice is if you get white mage/thief don't rage quit cause it'll start tough but you'll get though it.

I finished a low level run through of FFVA (As in, beat everything up to Euno with my highest level being 5) just as the Fiesta started.

Then I played again for the Fiesta.

I'll join it next year as usual.

Thanks :) I got Knight for my first pick. Seems pretty boring and typical, but I really don't even know what jobs are in the Wind crystal. Did I get lucky, or was it an average draw?

Knight is a press a to win class. I never use them during a normal play through. Double grip or whatever isnt that great. The innate defense of low hp characters can be used in a cool wayike in ffiiv: keep everyone at single digit hp and give your knight string equipment and they will defend better than the mage or what have you in their own. Of course magic attacks break this strategy...

Equipment can be expensive too and no good way to heal. Also Excalibur sucks since alot if end game enemies/bosses absorb holy.

What would be your top choice for jobs? I would want blue Mage, magic knight, ninja, and I dunno beast master?

For a traditional run?

Blue Mage is the best wind job, not the greatest statistical class but blue magic is such a powerful skill it's great the entire game, and it can even break rods to take advantage of enemy weaknesses (not that you'd ever need to break rods with a blue mage).

Mystic Knight vs Summoner is hard to pick which is better, mystic knight is more consistent the entire game between early game elemental sword usage, to mid game drain sword + bone mail and -aga usage, and end game flare/holy sword destruction. Summoner starts off slower but if you have blue magic it's not even noticeable, and it's a class that quickly picks up steam and continues to get better and better until end game when it wrecks.

Fire job is probably the hardest to argue which is "best". Ranger has rapid fire, but it's not a great class in of itself. It's only okay until it gets rapid fire mid-late world 2. Even then you'd rather have rapid fire on another melee unit, if you got all mage/support classes then it's not helping anyone else out. Ninja is better because of throw which is a decent secondary, though it's best skill dual wield is only useful if you have melee units to take advantage of it. Bard has sing which gives you access to early white wind (if you have blue) and confusion is a pretty powerful skill either way, you get a great way to deal with the undead and can god hax your characters with your songs. I really don't know which of these jobs is the "best".

Chemist is the best job in the game because mix is the most broken skill followed closely by blue magic.

Really FFV is great because there really isn't one best combination of 4 jobs

Thanks :) I got Knight for my first pick. Seems pretty boring and typical, but I really don't even know what jobs are in the Wind crystal. Did I get lucky, or was it an average draw?

Knight is pretty good, though you should never run, ever. This will allow you to get a max power brave which allows you to do tons of damage in the final areas of the game. It'll be solid the whole way though, plus you'll have access to the knight only swords. Doublehand is a great early game skill, makes the first half of the game a joke, later on though you'll want the evasion and defense bonuses of shields.

Wind Job is a very hard job to determine an absolute best.

White Magic, Black Magic, Knight and his awesome stuff, Blue Magic and his broken magic (good equips too!) are all enough to see a team through to the end.

Have to add in Time Magic to the Water crystal discussion. casting slow and haste is incredible plus Quick just allows you to win at all. I didn't really believe the hype until I had one.

Ranger, Ninja, and Bard are the three to beat for fire. Yes, no hit points hiding all the time Bard. Once you get the idea behind them though and their final two songs you are in for a treat.

Chemist is the clear best job in the game but Samurai is the best solo job and will win any fight with his unique combination of haste, giltoss, and instagibbing random encounters while dodging most hits.

In a hard mode run you also have the wildcard of Redmage. Now normally the best you can do with Red Mage is make him a better black or white mage with some luck in your wind crystal job. But now with a ton of luck you might get some combination of Time, White, Black, and Summon, which will turn a normal rod breaking heal staff attacking your own team dead weight into a superhero.

I forgot about time mages, they're another class that's hard to judge because they're okay early game but broken end game. Early game they have no real offense and manually hasting each character is slow, once they get hastega, comet, and quick lol broken. Yes they do have 750 breakin rods but breakin rods is over powered and makes all the mages stupidly powerful for most of the game. To be fair any mage not named red is awesome end game and black/white/blue/time/summon are great secondaries on any class, even berserker thanks to rune axe lol

While not a very good class, elemental is an awesome ability. I spam it basically through the whole game on normal playthroughs

Do you mean Gaia?

so i beat the game, but i dont know how to take a screen cap... or how to send it to the twitter thing...

my mystic knight had doublegrip with flare/stone sword chicken knife and hermes sandles. the knight had flare sword excalibur, but i pretty much had him on damage duty so he died alot. the red mage and theif were on healing duty.Even at lv 25 wasnt that hard. He did use southern cross or whatever a crap load which is annoying. i kept most of my party near death because they would die from one hit kills anyway, and that way the knight would often times block for them with my genji shield.

It doesn't have to be a screen cap. You can take a picture with a camera, even a shitty phone camera.

As for sending it to twitter, on the website where you tweet just click the little camera icon to select the picture file.

Done! might help to write all that in the OP

....how do i register again?
