Final Fantasy Five Four Job Fiesta 2012

Hmm I am not sure a Ninja Dragoon Red Mage and Thief can take down Neo Exdeath ; ; He simply does too much damage and I have no way of healing it back in time before he launches another attack. I am honestly stuck. I am level 40 and I wonder if grinding to 45/50 is the only viable option...

Hmm, I think you can do it at that level.

First some prep. Fight and steal from Crystal Dragons until you get a Dragon Lance. Then give your Dragoon Dual Wield with a Dragon Lance and a Chicken Knife, jumping from the back row.

Use the Red Mage (hopefully you have doublecast) to get protect on everyone during the exdeath phase. He's going to have to heal the rest of the group.

Give the thief Throw and throw high damage stuff from the back row. Note that you can steal stuff from all four forms of Neo Exdeath all that will throw for good damage, but other stuff like Excalibur, Fuma Shurikens, all that will do incredible damage.

Start with the magic lamp prepped to Odin and keep casting it until you hit golem.

Good information but Almagest hits me for 1600, killing everyone but my Dragoon. I think I really need to do another hour of grinding so i can survive it.

How I prevent that, I tick off the HP on a pad of paper.

55000, 55000, 50000, 60000, the 60k part is human and not heavy, so it is killed by Magic Lamp Odin.

so dragon lance and chicken knife is better than two dragon lances?

Against the non dragon part, yes.

Well I got the first part down very well. But I think I am just going to grind to get 1700hp for 3 of my 4 guys. Someone mentioned Olding the grinning body piece though. Would this drop the entire Almagest damage (in the last phase too) for the entire fight?

Skipped all the tablets after I got Lenna in an attempt to kill Neo Exdeath today. I made it up to him but lost about five times. My party is Blue Mage, Time Mage, Ranger, Dancer, and everyone is level 34 or 35. I think I'm going to try for Meteor. I'm doing most of my damage from casting Quick with the two mages and then Aeroga twice. My dancer has a fully powered chicken knife and rapid fire, but with less than 1K HP she doesn't live long.

Then he will get me with Almagest when he is done to one part :P

So make sure that the remaining section has minimal hp before you knock off the second to last one. Leave both sections and wear them both down. Like the gargoyle statue fights

Part XV: Megaman Style Boss Picking.

This entire week is going to be filled with short boss fights, so I guess I'll spend some time talking about Samurai.

Samurai, if not for the Chemist, would be the most broken class in the game. They equip heavy armor, use a weapon that while hard to find crits all the time, has the best legendary weapon (casts Haste when used, gives initiative and a high crit rate?) to go along with their innate physical evade. Gil Toss is also legendary. It is the best way to kill Neo Exdeath and all other Multitarget fights.
Code:
1) Use GilToss Damage Parameters:
   Attack = Level + 10
   M = 150
   Defense = Defense
2) Damage = (Attack - Defense) * M.  Max Damage = 9999.
3) Gil cost = 50 * Level * (# of targets attacked)

Unless the boss has insane defense (Necrophobe, Jacknapes, Gil Turtle) this attack does an insane amount of damage. Yes, it will bring you to the poor house very quickly, so what? You don't need it.

Oh, and lets look at slash.

Code:
SLASH
Use Damage formula HEX: 18
Spell Hit% = 85
Follow Hit Determination for Magical Attacks steps to determine if each hit
succeeds.
Instantly Kills all Enemies.
Bypasses Dead status immunity.
Does not work against Heavy type creatures.

Works on undead! 85% of the time it works everytime! Even the lowly Sword Slap can be brutal, especially if you are playing a bug fixed version or FFVa. Even in FFV SFC it does fight damage that will not break sleep or charm or whatever.

Ok, onto the actual show.

12:01 : Cutscene time. Looks like we want to chase after Galuf. Time to change Bartz to Samurai so the party is Samurai, Knight, Monk.

12:05 : That took awhile. Go to the Walse Meteor to find the Black Chocobo. Anyways, pick a meteor that's not the one near Tycoon and fight a boss. I choose the one near Walse.

12:07 : Boss fight time!

Code:

So let's do some math. My Samurai is level 25. How much damage did Gil Toss/Zenigage do? and how much did it cost? There are six Bombs in case you didn't know.

This fight can be extremely tough if you can't do multitarget damage or healing.

Well I got the first part down very well. But I think I am just going to grind to get 1700hp for 3 of my 4 guys. Someone mentioned Olding the grinning body piece though. Would this drop the entire Almagest damage (in the last phase too) for the entire fight?

Yeah, use an Ancient Sword, you can steal them from the Landcrawlers. This only weakens that one part, but it lasts the entire fight. I'm not sure how much it'll decrease by, but it should be significant. If you leave that part for last, he'll be weak as shit and very slow. Alternatively, you can leave the one in the back that looks like a skeleton for the end, so as soon as the others are dead you can just use Magic Lamp Odin before he pulls off any tricks. That's what I always do, anyway.

Only other thing I can think of would be to set Jump on people. When the screen starts shaking, get Jumping, because that's his signal that he's warming up Almagest. Lastly, make sure your Dragoon is using an Aegis Shield because you have a 33% chance of blocking it.

Ooh, nice! I like that idea.

It's a tough call, yeah. I might just grab a Bard straight off--they'd make pretty much any team easily winnable.

Though the early healing would be tempting...

I'm diggin all these ideas you guys are putting out for next year, sounds really good. It's funny you mention Bard cuz I just got it for my Earth Crystal job, so I guess my Monk Monk Berserker team gets a break after all. I had a crazy hard time with Byblos, had to Focus and hope he neglected to counter Drain or use anything bad. Soul Cannon wasn't so bad though, I think I just got lucky with crits.

Monks are like slightly less streaky Dancers when it comes to damage while Berserkers are even more streaky with axes.

The classes that hate Sol Cannon can't do lightning damage or high physical damage. Thief, Geomancer, White Mage. Even Beastmaster can get some good shots in by releasing a Sand Bear and hitting with the Blitz Whip.

Yeah, I put him down using 3 Monks and the Berserker with Barehanded. Those crits make a world of difference. I had to do as much damage as possible because I had way too much max HP and potions just aren't enough, so I could at best survive 2 Wave Cannons. Now that I have Bard, my Monks won't be complete crap at the end.

Damn you, Dancing Dagger. I swear Dance must have some kind of check to see if an enemy is undead, and if it is, Jitterbug moves to like 75%. Because it's almost all I get.

Yeah I noticed the assasin dagger would always do that on undead. 'Kill' them to bring them back at full HP. sooo annoying.

Party 2:
I think even if I get Knight again, I'm still going for the Chicken Knife. Not running from battles gets tedious fast, especially when my only healing at this point is drain spellblade and the heal staff. (No, I didn't get flame rings. Yes, I regret that now.)

Party 3:
I'm finding it's kind of interesting having a freelancer around, since it means that a) Someone can use this ribbon I would otherwise carry through the end of the game and b) Someone can use this death axe that 16 harvesters died for. I'm in the part of the game where the Sleep Blade is a better weapon, but I think it'll still come in handy: My party is going to have a hard time with the dragon pod otherwise.

Thank you all! I was able to finally beat Neo Exdeath with all 4 alive!

My strategy:

Bartz - Red Mage with Throw
Faris - Dragoon with Dual Wield Dragon Spear and Chicken Knife
Leena- Dual Wielding Ninja with Doublecast AND Hermes Sandals (major factor in the battle)
Krile - Thief with Doublecast

All lvl. 45

I had about 23 Fumas thanks to all my grinding and a Mover win.

Phase 1: Took down Exdeath with Fumas from Bartz and Leena, Jumps from Faris. Krile double casted Protect on everyone and healed any damage if necessary. Easy fight

Phase 2: NeoExdeath time! First off, I needed to kill the Grinning demon portion to take out Almagest. Hasted Leena kept throwing Fuma after Fuma, with Fuma help from Bartz and Jumps from Faris. This portion really depended on what the other pieces used. Then the Almagest phase. I kept attacking the Almagest piece and then immediately healed up after the attack. At this point, everyone had over 1700 so everyone lived. I kept Lenna on throwing duty and the piece was soon dispatched.

Phase 3: Dragon killing time! With Almagest nuetralized, it was time to take down Grand Cross. Same deal as before, Throw, Throw, Throw! With Faris' jumps, this section went down after only one Grand Cross, leaving the skeleton portion and the Human. I used two of my magic lamp summons for additional damage and kept Odin ready to go. With protect up, most of Human's damage was minimal. I threw EVERYTHING I had at him and had Faris jumping. No issues.

Phase 4: Skeleton and hyper mode go! Too bad all I had to do was use the Magic Lamp and out comes Odin. VICTORY!

This was one of the hardest fights I ever had in this game. It makes you appreciate how powerful high level White magic, blue magic, and Time Magic are when you do not have them in times of need!

See you next Fiesta!

edit: Horribly blurry cell phone pic for the loss :P
Fiesta2012Complete.jpg

Funny to hear people talking about drafting considering that is how the fiesta originated.

Dammit. I really need to finish this playthrough. Stupid Steam sales are messing with my groove. Fuck it, I'm gonna take down these Crystals tonight!

That party is a summoner and a mastered red mage away from being the one you usually see recommended in regular old FF 5 playthroughs, only they switch those classes to Freelancers and Mimes.

If you're going with Freelancer/Mime party, might as well at least master Monk and Thief to get max HP and Agility stats.

Dammit, I love this game. It has so much depth and so many options to explore. I wish they would make a modern FF game that uses the job system. Best we have now is FF Tactics.

FFV is my favorite iteration of the job system. I don't know if it was intentional but there really is a ton of depth, seemingly inexhaustible replay value. While I love FFT, the job system is not nearly as balanced. There's really only a few jobs that are really good. I don't know how you would defeat veliis wiegraf using some weaker jobs. In ffv it is possible and less frustrating too I think.

The jobs aren't really throwaway in ffv. The wind crystal jobs are useful as much as most other jobs. Seems lower level jobs are more throw away in the tactics series.

Part XVI: Megaman 2.

So in continuing on my character analysis with the classes I have let's go to the Monk. Monk has a ton of neat tricks and is basically the cheapest character in the game to outfit. No weapons, no spells, and his armor is usually pretty cheap. They also have some rather neat abilities like Chakra for light healing, Focus for extra damage, Kick for great early game MT damage, and Counter for those pesky physical hits. Add to all that HP+ skill and A great weapon skill to pass on (!Barefisted is a classic staple of many a Mage and Geomancer) they are considered to be one of the worst Wind Crystal jobs for the fiesta.

Why is that? Their damage scales by level. FFV has brilliant game design all around. One of the things it did to sort of balance out how broken certain jobs and job combinations are was to make the leveling curve very sharp. Oh sure, you can gain levels up to 22-23 or so very easily just by not running at all in World 1 and maybe by grinding out some Flame Rings but after that it slows the hell down. You can really see it if you look at the experience table and then a quick look at how much exp monsters give out.

Code:
Attack = 3 + (0..(Level/4))
M = 2
Defense = Defense

If the Attacker has Brawl:
Attack = 3 + Level*2 + (0..(Level*2/8))
M = (Level*Strength)/256 + 2
Defense = Defense

If the Attacker Kaiser Knuckles (and Brawl):
Attack = Attack + 50

Now remember that the standard damage formula is (Your A score-Their D score) times M.

Early on when enemies have a few thousand hp and defense between 0-15 you will do a crap load of damage even at lower levels. Not to mention that Fists have an 8% critical hit rate (they are stingy with Critical hits in this game. Most weapons have zero. The best has 30% (The Legendary Bow) and the only really high attack power weapon that has any crit on them are the Katanas, which range from 12-20. The crit formula works like this.

Code:
Let N1 = (0..99)
If N1 < Weapon Critical Hit%,
Attack = Attack * 2 and Defense = 0

Double damage and ignores defense eight percent of the time. Remember that fists (assuming you don't use the Equip Shield command or barefist a shield wearing class) hits twice.

Still, that starts to look pretty bad when the weapon modifiers that the other physical classes get start getting close to or over 100. Yeah, you'll do ridiculous damage at level 99 but since most games end in the high 30's or low 40's you'll be behind the times. Oh, you noticed the Kaiser Knuckles and you think well that will even the score? You're right of course, they do in fact bring the Monk's damage roughly in line with other physical classes, only problem is that you get them in late World 3 and instead of taking up a weapon slot they take your accessory. Accessory's are the most important piece of equipment in this game and all the other good ones are available in world 3. Regen and high defense, really high defense with a side of doom, permanent haste, permanent reflect, immunity to old and instant death, Absorb Fire/Null Ice, Absorb Water. All way better options than the Kaiser Knuckles. Permanent Haste will outdamage them.

If you have a bard or chemist though you can see the true mastery of this class when you max out speed and levels. Two 9999 hits a turn with a huge HP pool.

For completeness sake here's kick's damage formula.

Code:
Damage = (2*Level + (0..((2*Level)/8)) - Defense) * M
M = 2 + (Strength*Level/256)
with Kaiser Knuckles:
Damage = (50 + 2*Level + (0..((2*Level)/8)) - Defense) * M

Now on with the show!

This party just wrecks him. He swung at the Samurai who dodged with his 25% innate dodge (so broken) and 5 hits from the man and two ladies did him in. Hell if the monk hadn't missed once it probably would have done him in there, the monk was averaging 308 a fist and the Knight was doing 714 while the Samurai did 704. This guy can be sort of tricky for other parties though, he does swing rather hard after all and his dying Earth Shaker did about 500 to each member, so if he gets that one off in his second turn and then dies right away no one is likely to survive if you have low Vitality.

Woo hoo! Beat Neo Exdeath! First time that I've completed the challenge. Last year I got to Soul Cannon and my old DS Lite deleted my saves. All I have is crappy cell phone pics.

Gilgabot says my victory has been logged for processing.

Lenna and Bartz didn't survive the final battle. Meteor got them on the last turn before the boss was defeated.

Is it really? Ha! How did that happen? Like, some people were talking about doing a draft run, and did it at random instead?
2005, I believe. Red Scarlet was doing her Summer of FF and I wanted to join in on a challenge so we drafted each other's jobs.

In 2009 the idea of doing it with more limitations came up and when I originally limited it to five people more and more wanted to play and it just blew up to what it is now.

Random was just more sensible than trying to have five people draft together.

That wasn't quite as hard as I was expecting. I did initially forget to remove the Flametongue, however.

If I can make it past Exdeath and Melusine, I think I'm home free.

If you have a guy in a goofy pointed hat you can beat anything except maaaaaybe Omega. You can still beat him, you just need to level.

If you can two hand a sword with magic applied, you can also beat anything.

XVII: Megaman 3, without the Doc Robots.

So for the padding today let's go over the Knight.

Knight is a stupid simple class.

Two Handed doubles your attack Multipler if your weapon is used in both hands.

Code:
If the Attacker has Double Grip Ability equipped, M = M * 2

The Attacker does not get this bonus if he has a shield equipped, or is wielding
weapons in both hands (i.e. the Attacker must actually be double gripping the
weapon)

Guard is just as simple. For physical attacks Damage=0.

Cover takes the hit for any character kneeling so long as the person with cover isn't dead, petrified, asleep, or paralyzed.

Equip Swords allows you to equip regular swords and knight swords. Can be terribly useful in some fiesta challenges as there are three good knight swords (Brave Blade, Ragnarok, Excalibur.)

Equip Shields can be super useful when you just want some more defense or you want a character do absorb an element without using your accessory slot.

Equip Armor is the same thing as shields, only for heavy armor instead. Also situationally useful.

Almost none of these are going to be used in this playthrough as my party is fairly defense and high octane when it comes to attacking. The Black Mage, the only character who would really want the armor would probably rather have Gil Toss for the hard fights, or possibly Equip Katana for a certain fight...

9:51 : Sometimes I forget where this meteor is. It's right by the Ronka Ruins. Debating on whether or not to de equip Flame Rings right now as my party is rather weak to the boss's Aqua Rake, but let's see what happens.

I watched someone solo the entire game of FFT with the worst class (Archer) so any class can beat any challenge in that game. There really aren't any throw away jobs/characters in FFT (not counting Malak/Rafa) it's just Tactics is a much easier game to break. Obviously some classes are better or more broken then others, but that's not really different from FFV. Even if you have no idea what you're doing in Tactics you get instant win characters like Agrias and TG Cid who can solo the game by themselves.

Honestly it would be kind of cool if there was a similar type Fiesta challenge for FFT. You get a random pool of 5 jobs and once you unlock them you must keep your main party of all generics + ramza as those classes for the game. I think it would help people realize how under rated some FFT classes are the way the FFV fiesta did.

Part XVIII: A New World

The last class is Black Mage. There's nothing to say about them. They cast spells that do damage. If you equip a boosting rod, it boosts the damage by 150 percent. If you hit an elemental weakness, you do insane damage. If you give your party Flame Rings, they can heal too. One of the best classes in the Challange.

This Gilgamesh is weak to some hilarious shit. If you ever have White Mage here I urge you to use Mini on him. Anyways my plan is to cast fira on him and then on myself when I take damage. Four castings is enough.

Anyways, I'm sick of this one boss a go nonsense for now and am heading directly for the Big Bridge. Real boss music by Gilgamesh in the last fight be damned!

12:28 : Heading back up. Don't want the imps or whatever to see you, so you do that crazy back crab walk. I do stop by the free healing spring and then out the previously locked main door at the bottom.

12:30 : Big Bridge is west. Oh yes, that sweet sweet music. Hey, all of these encounters are in the boss section of the Algorithms FAQ so we get an extra code dump.

This fight isn't too bad but it is a real sort of preview on how the other Gilgamesh fights go. For some solo runs this fight can be nuts. Buffs are king in this game and he gets all the good ones when he goes nuts. His new battle script is also pretty bad. Jump hurts a lot. Electrocute however is a joke. The main problem is damaging him.

One round got him below 2500, Samurai Crits are NUTS, then he went crazy. Two more rounds killed him, with healing from Fira cast by the Monk. Fought a Neo Garula and some more Merrows right after that so I could get to the cutscene and finally save this game.

I was thinking this too. You could even segment the jobs into 4 groups based on how long it takes to unlock them, and then make them available by chapter or some other major points.

I do think there are some issues with some of the jobs in Tactics, though. I like how White Mage and Black Mage in FFV have an assortment of status spells, but in Tactics, they lumped all of those spells into Oracle. Most enemies have no immunities except for bosses, which are immune to like everything. I wish they just spread those spells out amongst other jobs and added Blue Mage or something, and maybe made monsters be more of a threat.

So you want to play FFTA.

That has the additional drawback of limiting jobs by race, making cross-class stuff much harder.

Run #3 also made it up to the forest, although I haven't fought the crystals yet. Mystic knights are surprisingly low-offense without Two-handed or Flare sword, and Rangers are pretty low-offense without Rapid Fire. Random battles are much the same as my second run (Break Sword x3) but I have to outlast the bosses. Or I would, if bosses in this part of the game didn't have some exploitable weakness. Ancient Sword > Gilgamesh, Death Axe > Dragon Pod, Shell > Gilgamesh v2 (Hit me with Vampire now!), and Sleep Spellblade > Atomos.

Tried FFTA, wasn't crazy about it. I didn't like the race restrictions on jobs or the way you learned abilities.

Anyway, my Monk Monk Berserker Bard run is going super fast somehow. A lot of bosses I thought would be difficult were manageable, though Exdeath was pretty crazy. I lucked out cuz I got some rare items, like Death Sickle and Reflect Ring after only a single fight against those enemies, which is good cuz I can't do more than like 20 minutes of grinding before I get sick of it and just move on.

My favorite trick for this group was killing the crystals using Zombie + Hide + Death Sickle + Reflect Ring

I've come to the conclusion that I don't have the patience for Reflect Rings in the Barrier Tower, since reflect knights have both Reflect and high defense. (Like an awful lot of things, they aren't immune to stoning, and if I recall correctly Titan also sorts them out pretty quickly.) A full set is nice to have, but you can grab 2 out of Istory Falls if you're doing that, and they're the common steal from one of the enemies in phoenix tower.

I do still have the patience for:
  • Flame rings with a black mage
  • Statues, up through about an inventory's worth of gold needles
  • Hitting with silly things in boss battles (Dark spark, Death claw, Graviga, Death sickle)

After delaying for a month, my team of Thief Bartz, Zerker Lenna & Faris, and White Mage Krile took down Neo ExDeath.

... White Magic makes that fight god awfully easy, compared to my run last year (Thief, Summoner, Bard, Dancer).

Might go after Shinryu. Not gonna bother attempting Omega.
See you next Fiesta.

Edit: Oh, and no fatalities this year was nice... Lenna died on the final turn last year @_@
