It has to be a demo of some sort. Whether it is FFXIII or Versus or FFVII:R. I swear if it is shitty preorder incentive DLC.
Square Enix noticed that betas are all the rage today, so Final Fantasy XIII comes with a multiplayer beta for Kane and Lynch 2.

Though the complaints over pre-order DLC would probably be more hilarious.

Did anyone see the new Jump scans? Weapon customization revealed. Weapons can be leveled up using materials dropped by enemies in the game. They can also be upgraded into new weapons. They show Lightning's starting weapon - the Blaze Edge, and also an upgraded weapon - the Slash Carbine. There will be over 100 different materials throughout the game.

Does there seem to be a branching upgrade path? Interesting, it sounds like a more in-depth version of FF8's weapon upgrade system.

I'm guessing leveling a weapon just raises its strength a bit, whereas upgrading it into a new weapon might add abilities to it or significantly raise certain stats.

Between the weapon upgrade system and the fact that there seem to be level caps that get periodically raised throughout the story, this game seems like a pretty heavily controlled experience, which is a good thing for balance and a bad thing for compulsive exploit-abusing min-maxers like me.

Is it similar to the FF8 weapon upgrading system? Or is there actual room for customization?

Also, not sure if anyone's posted this yet, but I've been listening to it for a while :)

4 player coop online game mode confirmed??

Sounds good though, I love multiple leveling systems. If somebody made an RPG where you had a character that leveled up, that had jobs that you leveled up, which had skill groups that you leveled up, that had individual abilites that you leveled up, with equipable weapons that you leveled up to level up your weapon skill to unlock more weapon abilities that you leveled up and equipment slots for every part of your body with equipment that you leveled up, all of this with progress bars so you can see how close you are to levelling up, I would be in heaven.

If the Weapon Creation system is any good, then I'll shun the Star Ocean series and allow FFXIII to be my new master.

Edit: Maybe I'm reading too much into it, it'll probably be single path for the weapon. With that said, I hope they have crazy uber ultimate weapons.

I don't know if there's branching, but weapons have levels. When you combine materials into a weapon, it gains exp. They don't really go into details but they say that when a weapon reaches the maximum level, you can then upgrade it into another weapon completely. There's a screen showing the Blaze Edge being changed into what I think is "Magnum Blaze". Screen's kinda tiny though.

Interesting. I suppose that if it changes from one weapon to another, branching would be a tough thing to thrust upon the player because you wouldn't really be able to take it back. Sounds like it's mainly straight-up leveling with occasional bigger leaps in what it's capable of - like transforming the weapon to Blaze Edge will add a 30% block rate, and transforming it to Magnum Blaze will add a counterattack ability on top of that, or some such.

If this is how it sounds, though, passive abilities won't (mainly) reside in weapons. So either there'll be an accessory system for those, hopefully allowing two of them a la FF6 and FFX-2, or they'll reside in the Crystarium system so you can just keep acquiring more and more of them and end up with something similar to a maxed-out Suppin from FF5 as far as passive abilities are concerned. I'm cool with either of those if that's the case.

I presume that transforming the weapon changes the item requirements for leveling them up, whereas leveling the weapon won't.

The loot whore in me just went "Yay!"

Whatever happened to just finding and buying new weapons? :/

Reminds me alot of FF9 for some reason. Things keep getting better for this :D

The more I think about it, the more I like the way this game is handling character progression, even though we don't have the full picture. From what I can tell, once you hit a particular part of the story's level cap, you can start growing laterally instead of vertically - learning other character's abilities and broadening yourself instead of raising your raw stats, even at a higher experience cost. Or you can just save your Crystarium points so that as soon as the level cap is raised, you can jump ahead and become a good bit more powerful very quickly. And as for the weapons, you can grind each individual weapon up, but once it levels up, you may need to keep progressing in the story in order to get access to the items you need to continue leveling. Very interesting, and I like that so much about the game pushes the player along to continue experiencing the story.

Man I hadn't watched that new versus trailer. This game looks brillant. We need a return to the glory the Final Fantasy series had with VI and VII and VIII (the best FF period) in my opinion.

I have faith in Nomura, he can add as many belts as he wants as long as the characters are interesting and the story is good.

I also did not know Agito was moved to PSP. That's a good thing since cellphone games we would never get a chance to play.

it's really hard not to jump on the "DECEMBER WW RELEASE" bandwagon..... I just can't wait for this!!!

Hehe, have to confess I did have the american release down as January and europe february, but I looked at it before I posted and saw madness!

If they do announce really upfront release dates I will be extremly impressed, I have a feeling the lightning PS3 slim will be making its way to europe as well.

Someone didn't play Kingdom Hearts I and II.

If there are no restrictions on the purchase of other weapons, then I'm all for weapon leveling system. FF8 had a linear upgrading system that felt extremely restrictive. I think weapons leveling like it was done in Dark Cloud 2 would be nice. It might even be interesting if we could develop to final weapons according to what roles we would like our characters to play, i.e. have a weapon path with stronger magic or a weapon path with stronger physical attack, for every character.

disappointing news: June release for US/UK

normal news: late April release for US/UK

big news: early March release for US/UK

HUGE news: late January/early Feb. release for US/UK

Impossible news: WW release December 17/18

in my opinion :D

I fucking hate whoever these Official PS Blog assholes are that are overhyping this thing. BUT I WANT TO BELIEVE IT REALLY IS HUUUUUUUUGE!

Honestly, the only news I can see other than an April release date is that there'll be a new demo on sale in February with a free copy of Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

What's the point of making a demo a pack-in with the game, if the demo game is gonna release in a few months? I hope they don't pull that dumb shit.

I'm still holding on to a March release and a demo in December. Anything earlier and I'll be happy all weekend (even though I'm stuck at home with H1N1).

Weapon customization sounds interesting. Hopefully it will work similarly to X's system, but without the inventory restrictions. I like collecting, dammit!

And STILL no word on Vanille's summon? Argh.

chances are I've missed in the last few pages, but:

is this 'huge announcement' also being done on XBL or anything MS related... or is it strictly Sony hyping this to high heavens on the PS Blogs?

It better be HUGE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing the weapon customisation's system reminds me of is of FFVIII's weapon remodeling, just with levels in between the updrages now, and who knows what more.

Yay rumors. I've seen various ones claiming that the announcement is a worldwide release. I've also heard it won't be a demo, but all that is probably just wild speculation.
