Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn $9.99 at US Amazon (PS4/PS3/PC)

It's worth it. That $15 a month gets you (or at least, me) more hours of entertainment than any AAA game on the market.

$15 a month?

So $180 a year to play this game? Shiiiiiiiiet.
I loved the free 30 days when I played it on PS3, but that's a ridiculous cost, IMO. :/

I'm not going to sit here and tell you the game has "ridiculous content", but it's been pointed out that it's actually 12.99 (because you don't need more than one character per server - it's actually a huge waste of time to start up two unless you have no life), and 12.99 is actually a lot cheaper than WoW.

So if you're mind-boggled by an MMO costing money, you're kind of late to the party here.

That being said FFXIV does have a lot of content and seems to be more ambitious than the other offerings out right now. That says more about how much the others suck, but once they deepen some of the game systems it could easily be the next WoW.

Cool just bought the game on the PS4.

If I decide to buy the PC version later on (like through a Steam sale) would I get an additional 30 days tacked onto my current account?

If you're payign $12.99 aren't you commited to six months though? Like I couldn't decide to pay for the summer then just quit?

Incredible deal for a really fun game. There's an wealth of content in the base game so you'll definitely get more than your money's worth. Plus, the expansion is supposed to have as much if not more content than the base game iirc.

I definitely won't argue that (bolded).
I've had a fascination with MMO's for a long time, but #1. I can't justify subscription fees into my budget and #2. I've had to rely on console MMOs, as my PC can barely play fucking Half Life 2. ;)
That #2 means I probably miss out on some good F2P MMOs.

Sadly, I'm either eventually going to have to bite the bullet or, like FFXI, completely miss out on the experience. Hell, FFXI is going on over 12 years online and still has a sub-fee, no?

I can guarantee anyone worried about the sub cost that there's more than enough content to justify it. Seriously, it actually makes me happy to see just how much our money is getting us every time I patch drops. It's insane.

They mean the $12.99 a month option. It limits you to one character per realm (you don't actually need more than one character) and 8 for the account but that's the only downside. You can only pay that one a month by month basis.

If you choose the option with only 1 character you can quit anytime and you only pay 12$ per month. (Its the same option I chose :) )

But how is $12.99 a month really that much of an expense? Skip lunch one day a month and bam, you're there. It's just a few bucks more than a Netflix subscription, and arguably much more entertaining.

I once upgraded my PS3 game to the PS4 - can I buy this to reacquire the PS3 game and, in the process, get what is effectively a three-dollar discount on a month of play?

Yep, you get 30 days for each new device you purchase it for. PC + PS3 + PS4 = 90 days. I'm not sure if the steam version does the same, but i dont think i'd buy the game on steam after seeing the problems people are having dealing with the xpac.

yes i think you do,but keep in mind when you buy this game on steam your Square Enix account gets converted to steam only which means if your buying heavensward you have to buy it on steam you can not get a cd-key from a site like gmg

I could just have one character only right and level them in as many classes as I want, right? Is there any reason to get another character?

I don't think so, I think it's 1 platform code per service account

The only reason is to look different, I wouldn't do it

Im interested in playing this for the summer. Can anyone link to pics of the types of armor sets available in this game? Thats what I enjoy most in MMORPGs

A few more questions: How is the combat? It looks hotbar based, but is it as snappy as something like WoW? Can you attack and move freely?

I'm sort of debating this myself. I'd probably rarely touch the PS3 version again, but it would be nice to have it available for my bedroom setup, plus the slight discount for a month.

I haven't touched WoW in a really long time, but yes it's very similar to what I remember. You can run in circles jumping while attacking (it wouldn't help, but you could do it to answer your question)

It's definitely worth checking out at that price. It's definitely not the MMO for me, but it does do some things well, and you've got a stupid amount of content to get through in a month for that $10.

Yes.

Some class abilities require standing in place to cast(like mages where movement cancels certain actions), but for the most part it is as close an MMO has gotten to 'feeling' like WoW in terms of control. Very smooth, fast, and snappy. You will feel right at home coming off of WoW.

Also controller mapping works exceptionally well.

It's very much like WoW. The Global Cooldown is longer, so it feels slower at the start, but I like it that way. Makes everything feel more deliberate.

I really only tank, so I can't speak too intelligently on other roles. But melee DPS seems more position based than WoW. I also really love the boss fights, which I've always found to be really well designed.

Combat is pretty much the same as WoW. Most classes will have to stop to cast spells etc, but you're free to move around and attack as melee classes/the archer class if you want. That said, the game will have you running around like a madman at end game. You can't just stand and mash abilities.

Cool! I just bought an xbox one controller after my 360 controller broke. Will the xpac include the base game, and is there a free demo version I can play to check it out?

Should be a 14 day free trial for any version.

Xpac won't include the base game.

Another reason to have alt characters is for retainers, your personal shopkeepers, so you can store more equipment and sell more stuff to the markets. But I don't think a lot of people do this. 1 character is all you need, really.

It's worth the $12 or so bucks a month. You get pretty substantial new content every three months, and honestly, the game has saved me money, since it's all I play outside of big "event" RPGs like Bloodborne or handheld titles.

And Re: controllers, at times it feels like an action RPG on a controller (at least playing as a melee DPS or Warrior). Especially when things get hectic and you're running around spamming AOE attacks and whatnot.

Game is fantastic, especially at that price. Kinda shitty these always seem to never apply to digital copies on Amazon, though.

Wealth of content and even if you don't get the expansion tons of people will still be doing the stuff pre-expansion since the expansion requires you to have finished the main scenario through to 2.55. (the last of the major content patches for ARR)

So I have to buy the game to play the trial?
No, you don't need to buy the game to play the trial.

As mentioned, there is a slightly cheaper option, and you can always cancel and resub at any time if you know you will be stepping away for a period of time(your characters will be saved and will be ready for when you return).

Also the constant support is staggering, more-so than most other MMO's. The amount of content incorporated into the game in the near 2 years since launch is well beyond the drip-feed most other MMO's receive.

This is easily the best MMO to play right now. The community isn't showing any signs of slowing down and quality content is added regularly. If you're buying this with an interest in playing Heavensward, they're about to ramp up the experience you gain from the main story quests so you can mainline your way to the new expansion without having to do any side stuff.
