The finale to A Realm Reborn is live and many of us have finished it. We want to talk about it. This is where we talk about it.

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS! MARKED OR UNMARKED BY ENTERING THIS THREAD YOU RISK BEING SPOILED ON THE STORY OF THIS PATCH AND POSSIBLY THE WHOLE OF A REALM REBORN! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED SO HARD!

SO HARD!

SPOILER WARNING!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With that out of the way, lets begin! I'll post my thoughts a bit later in the thread as this first post will serve as a warning for spoilers and so I won't go into details in this first post!

I stopped back in September cuz I started a business...hope to have some free time again this spring leading up to the expansion. Can any one point me to a resource to sort of guide me on where to go from where I was? I think I had finally hit ilvl110

So, um, Estinien. What the hell was he doing there? Did I miss an explanation considering what happened at the end of the DRG questline, or is this supposed before that or something?

He fought Nidhogg and took his eye so he's an expert on dragons now I guess?

Just finished the story.

I'm a bit disappointed that all likable characters died near the end.
If they where great heroes who could take on powerful monsters it felt a bit weird for them to be killed by regular grunts in large numbers...

As for the poisoning, when the bottle appeared in the shot, I knew that someone is going to poison something. My bets were on the sultana trying to poison the player, ha ha.
Near the very end I half expected the "where should we go" question to be answered with "Heavensward".

All in all I liked it, but some bits of those last few quests dragged on for a bit too long (spawning enemies in destinations, uh.).

He fought Nidhogg and took his eye so he's an expert on dragons now I guess?

Yeah, but that was always the case- you become a DRG because the eye chooses you and all that (and it's the first Azure Dragoon who took Nidhogg's eye, iirc). He should be in jail or something!

Cross-post from the OT:

Like damn, first let's start off with the Sultana is dead. I called it, it was not a surprise, there was a cup motif from the beginning of 2.5 so poison was obvious. I'm happy about her death, moving on.

Right when we got into the sultana's chambers, I put 2 and 2 together and figured out why we had picked up a useless vial earlier that no one in their right mind would have held on to. I think it was a dumb and a bit of a stretch but I forgive it because I like where it brought the story. I'm going to jump around a bit but I love that we are entering Ishgard as fugitives from the rest of Eorzea because honestly, I expected that they were just going to march us in their as the saviors of the realm and I'm so happy they didn't go that boring route.

Let's cover Raubahn next, like damn. Like holy shit damn. He straight up murdered the most annoying fuck in this story, no ceremony, no speeches, no special treatment, rage mode and cut down. Everything with Raubahn was hype as fuck. He went full Asura's Wrath mode and I loved it. "My left arm" lol indeed, he was a boss through and through and the only thing that makes me sad is the conclusion of all of this storyline will most likely make it so that he is not head of the flames anymore. He's either going to die (which would be a shame but I expect it now) or he will survive through it all, be absolved of his crimes, but not feel comfortable about leading a grand company after he let his emotions take the better of him. The situation is already pretty much laid out, that new lala that showed up might as well have had a sign painted on him saying he will be the new GC leader. Which I think I'm ok with, dude seemed cool.

Let's touch on the scions though after my initial hype, I'm not as pumped here. FIrst, let's get it out of the way, it's cute to think they all died heroic deaths and for a moment, maybe it was true but we didn't see the bodies so it's obvious they are going to show back up in a very pivotal moment in 3.0 to save the day and reveal they are alive. For bonus points, Angary will be upset because they are going to say Minfilia went back and saved everyone, somehow with Hydaelyn magic. I will say, I did enjoy both the duo scenes. Yda and lala monocle, and Thancred and Y'shtola both had pretty badass hold the line scenes while Minfilia looked on in uselessness so points for that.

Let's talk about the epic heel turns though. Both got me the most even though the second one is pretty ambiguous and probably isn't as big of a heel turn as I hoped. So Ilbert is a fucking boss. Like I didn't see that betrayal coming at all. They set up the blond eye patch guy as such a red herring that I started ignoring him but man, I didn't see Ilbert turning coat at all especially this soon. He absolutely destroyed Raubahn and I look forward to a trial fight against him. Then the after credits scene. Like Urianger, wtf. Now I think this was just there for shock value, which I'm cool with because it worked. The only reason I say that is because we don't really know the white ascians goals to well but I've always assumed he's been working counter to the rest of them, so I'm not really banking on Urianger being some super duper turn coat but I was taken aback when he walked out of the shadows. Literally the last person I would have expected to be doing anything even remotely not on the up-and-up.

So yeah, I'm pumped. 3.0 can't come soon enough. They did still leave some plot points open, one evil lala made room for another evil lala so nothing really resolved IMO and the garleans are still on that backburner. I do have a question though. The lala who was the adopted son of somebody. Who was his father, I didn't recognize the last name they used and I want to say they were talking about Raubahn but that seems way wrong.

Any kind of quick summary for those of us who've been away? (Edit: just saw the above post, this is excellent - thanks!)

Last I checked in was the start of that awesome detectives chain.

Ilbert is probably the worst part of the patch to me- they set up his turn so much that it was just eye-rolling when he finally did it. Urianger is kind of worrying too- hoping it's not just Thancred Electric Bugaloo considering it barely affected him.

If anything, I don't think Urianger is being mind controlled in anyway. Take that how you will. I think the Ilbert turn got me because I liked his character. Him and Raubahn's bro moments were fun so I let my guard down.

Yeah if it turns out he's doing it of his own free will- especially if he's a double agent/conflicted/anything other than 'MWAHAHA you thought I was good but I was not get wrekt nerds' it might be fine. Especially if it moves him from the waking sands.

Go back to the waking sands and talk to him. His dialogue makes me laugh because he's like "oh man, I'm the only thing stopping the ascians and garleans from finding the waking sands, I got this guys."

I was kinda hoping DRG questgiver would have something but nope.

I was going to log and do the new quests, but my patience with the main storyline is done after being sent across the world for two NPC dialog bubbles through 50 levels and some more.

So, other than the Sultana, who died and how?

Edit: nvm, found a summary in /r/ffxiv

Pipin Tarupin is Raubahn's adopted son. An orphan of war, probably, as he's also Ala Mighan? Maybe?

Alrighty, I'll start I suppose.

I found the story here to close things out a bit on the underwhelming side. First off, the cutscenes are all pretty well done. That said, I wish it was capped off by a lead in trailer for Heavensward. Ah well. =)

Okay, lets get into detail. The reason I found this to be underwhelming was the fact this patch played out exactly how it was set up with no swerves to be seen anywhere.

They have set up Teleji's "revolution" for many patches now. They set up Ilbard's turn for awhile now. In fact, the entirely of the Crystal Braves turn was set up far in advance if you were paying attention. Teleji goes to bat for the Domains and shows his support for the Braves and pledges supplies. It was absolutely no surprise to me that he was their major financial backing from the start and the Braves themselves were in his pocket the whole time.

They also set up Nanamo's death in advance to the point where I'm actually shocked they went through with it in such a blunt and obvious way. Don't get me wrong, it was very sad. =( However, it happened in such a direct, obvious way that it was just kind of there. Nah, don't suspect this handmaiden who showed up out of nowhere in these scenes. No, don't suspect this wine glass that's front and center for the patch image. Nah, you're not being summoned to her quarters to be the fall guy. Not at all.

That said, I really felt for Nanamo and Raubahn. =( Raubahn especially. His scenes were powerful, powerful stuff. Especially in Japanese.

Alphinaud having everything blow up in his face was absolutely beautiful though. I hate this smug prick and he kind of had this coming. Teleji played him like a fiddle. Will it lead to actual character growth? I doubt it. This game isn't really keen on that thing. Instead just throwing events at you. Tataru has more growth that Alphinaud.

Going to go a bit random here....

1) Lady Iceheart - Dispels a shield and peaces out. I expected more.
2) Lolorito - Lolorito being the "mastermind" is out of left field and pretty silly.
3) The Scions - The Scions have some very nice scenes. A glimpse of Ada's face? Yes please. But I can't help but think they have pulled out of tougher shit and their fights were kind of lame.
4) Minfilia - Useless as always. However, she is especially WTF. Out of nowhere, she hears the Mother Crystal?! Then goes off to help leaving your character behind? Why? She has no powers. She has nothing going for her. This felt stupid to me.
5) Midgardsormr - Only two brief scenes. Nothing to say. In Japanese, he mentioned Hydaelyn but the subs do not mention her. I wonder what they changed this time.
6) Raubahn's Son - I got so excited until he said "adopted son" of Raubahn. OMG if he was Nanamo and Raubahn's child...
7) Kan-E and Merylwyb - Let me just say this. Fuck these two. Fuck them.

In fact, let me expand on this. Yoshi P, the writers and whoever else should be taken to task to how completely useless almost all of their female leaders have been. All three city states and run by nicely designed, strong looking women. Each of them are shown to be completely inept, clueless and morally pathetic. This patch was it for me. Kan E and Merylwyb are in the middle of an obvious coup, their Alliance member is in trouble and they do nothing. They straight up leave in the middle of Nanamo's death (and this woman should have been suspicious of EVERYBODY), Raubahn's rage and the false arrest of your player character. Are you fucking kidding me?

They have been portrayed so poorly, it insulting. They can not protect their people. They can not manage their people. They can't even bare to stand next to their allies when shit goes down IN THEIR FACE. They are so self centered, spiteful and just...pathetic. While we are at it, we can probably toss in Minfilia into that pot as well. She is a "leader" who does not lead. At best she is a damsel in distress. At worst this is a waste of space. Oh wait, big boobs! Nevermind.

I'm pretty fucking disappointed in these characters and their writing. It's downright stupid.

Finally, there is no real resolution going into Heavensward. You're on the run, you're heading into a warzone, you have no idea what is happening to the City States (who is to say the Braves didn't assault both Gridania and Limsa as well? Not to mention Mor Dhona), and the Ascians are just running around willy nilly like the Saturday Morning cartoon characters they are. Lets not forget that they can pretty much kill us (Scions and the PC) at any point but nah. =P

Overall, I'm happy with the cutscene quality, and the time some of our favorite characters got to have to shine, but I was underwhelmed. This was their big send off into the expansion and...there real surprise was that there was no real surprise. Everything (sans Lololololorito) went off exactly as they set it up. Which was a little disappointing to me. Raubahn was the superstar, the bit Scions played their part, but it all just felt meh with no real close.

In the end, you may be the Warrior of Light, but in the end, no matter your deeds (of which their are many) no one really gives a fuck.

P.S. Yugiri is so gorgeous. =DDD

P.P.S. The Patch Notes spoil the fuck out of the story if you paid attention to the achievement listing. =O

Middy just calls you the messenger of Hydaelyn. His comments contain nothing of weight in English or Japanese.

As for GC leaders, their hands might really be tied up. Shit's going down, primals everywhere, their people look up to them, but not unanimously, perhaps they're not making the right decisions but you can kinda see where they're coming from and how united Eorzea was always a mere pipe dream.

If there was ever a classic case of not reading the OP at all, this is it.

@ Middy: Ah, okay.

As for the leaders? No. Not buying this. Not one bit.

Honestly, I had the complete opposite problem. Merlwyb's speech earlier about how Limsa comes first was right. She's a ruthless pirate queen, she shouldn't have even thought of coming to Raubahn's aid for that one second she did. You don't interfere in the politics of another country like that, unless it's directly for Limsa's benefit. This is the sort of situation she should be heading back home and thinking on how to capitalise on. Instead she's been sanitised (like back with the weird tea party nonsense).

Kan-e-senna should probably have done something, yeah- she's hippie-ish enough that she would've gone 'oh no my friend is in danger!!!!!'.

This probably won't hurt. Also leave! Leave now before it's too late!

Thank you!

Except I read the OP... If you can't connect the relevancy of my post to the topic then I don't know what to tell you dude maybe you're thinking too linearly, and besides that now your post in the thread is actually the single most off topic!

Merylwyb is no ruthless pirate anything. She is toothless and has shown herself to be a fool (her acts were what caused Titan to be summoned in the first place for example). Like the others, she fucks up then leans on you to clean up her messes.

These city-states are part of an alliance. They are in open trade, share missions, and actively depend on each other. Except for when the story dictates they don't. They are right there when their fellow leader is killed, the Warrior of Light (THEIR SAVIOR OVER AND OVER) is accused of her murder, the Scions accused along with him and they are bounce? No fucking way.

Time and time again, each of them are shown to be incompetent on a high level. This was just it for me.

Yeah, that's exactly what you should do- if your 'ally' is in that state, you abandon them- that's how renaissance politics works. You only stay in an alliance if it benefits you (or I guess if you're married to their royalty, w/e). If nothing else, use the probable resulting civil war as a buffer. And Merlwyb united the pirates at gunpoint, she's hardly toothless even if she hasn't done too much in 2.0- she even deal with Titan and Leviathan the first time; throw bodies at them until they drown in their blood.

If she had helped it would be the most ham-fisted JRPG I FIT FOR MY FWNEDS nonsense so far in FFXIV, and that's kind of saying a lot. The right move was to go back and find a way to benefit, or assess the new rulership.

I have to agree with this. Way too many examples in the last ~60 years of real world history that show just how much alliances are worth. I didn't expect them to do anything more in those situations. Sad, but it just made those scenes more belivable for me.

I guess I can see the argument they didn't actually mean that and that the writers just wanted to write them out of the story, though. Sometimes I like to remember what optimism feels like, though.

If Grand Companies will still exist in Heavensward, those characters will probably return, so at least there's that.

I really wouldn't bring in "real world" stuff into this because one would flay this story apart.

For example, in the real world, the Eorzean Alliance would have completely routed the Castrums they attacked and took away from the enemy during Operation Archon. Yet, in this game, these fools let Garleans set up elobrate bases right on their front doors. =P

They would have stormed Beastmen strongholds and committed Genocide to ensure Primals would never be summoned again.

None of them would allow the formation of the Crystal Braves, nor would they allow them to post in their cities.

None of them would give Alphinaud the time of day. Ever.

If she had helped it would be the most ham-fisted JRPG I FIT FOR MY FWNEDS nonsense so far in FFXIV, and that's kind of saying a lot. The right move was to go back and find a way to benefit, or assess the new rulership.

This is silly because they have done exactly this and they have only survived up to this point because they worked together. By themselves, each city state is an epic, royal fuck up. Together, they're pretty darn good. One dies at their feet and they walk? It's a complete 180, out of character (what little they have) and a cherry on their shit cake IMO.

If they had ever exhibited any hint of "renaissance politics", you would have a point. But they haven't. The only thing they have exhibited was gross incompetence by themselves and a modicum of strength when fighting together. Even then, they leaned on the Scions so hard Minfillia's back hurt twice as bad.

so is leveling 1-50 going to change when heavensward comes out? Because I might not get to experience all of the story by then

I just want this game to be a story about the follies of colonial empires and european bigotry instead of just being another boring FF teenage soap opera, is that so wrong??? Gaius come back and shout about the civilised Garlean's burden some more!

Can someone explain to me why Nanomo was so popular? Her death was sorta sad and her idea to try and and bring democracy to Uldah was noble if hilariously ill-timed, but I don't understand her fanbase other than 'she's a potato'.

You'll have to because Main Scenario is pre-requisite for assumedly a large part of the expansion. It's not going anywhere though.

Was there any CGI in this latest patch, or was it all in-game stuff?

The FMV trailer for Heavensward (which has elements from this recent storyline patch) will be released on April 11th. Yoshida decided on waiting to unveil it till then due to the fact it had spoilers in it for the ARR finale and wanted to give people a chance to finish the story before getting spoiled (I am too weak at work and already spoiled it when I woke up this morning lol).

From what Yoshida hinted at, the Opening Cinematic for Heavensward will have a similar cinematic beat as the FMV that merged the end of 1.0 and the start of 2.0 did, A cinematic that merges the elements from the most recent events and finale of 2.0 as they move forward into current and potentially future stuff happening in Heavensward 3.0.

So the main story will not continue at all anymore?
Just a simple yes or no will suffice, as I haven't completed the story myself.

I think it was a missed opportunity for Midgardsormr to not be mocking you/being snarky as all of the scions were "dying" It was the perfect opportunity to knock down the player character IMO

I thought it was really great. The first half of the really long series of cutscenes had my heart beating like crazy, and then Nanamo died and it just got even more insane as it went on. Very sad to say goodbye to the Sultana (apparently so at least) as I'm a loyal Flame.

I love the new Lalafell, he had great voice acting. Raubahn actually scared me when he got angry. Teledji Adeledji was the worst though, so I'll let it slide. Illberd's betrayal could not have been telegraphed any harder, I suspected him the moment he and Raubahn's backstory was introduced (and I imagine I'm far from the only one). Being betrayed by essentially all of the Crystal Braves though... I didn't see that coming. Pretty painful stuff. Poor Wilred!

As for the Scions, I'm really curious to see what the deal with Urianger is. I don't get the feeling that he's a bad guy, but consorting with Ascians is usually frowned upon. Yda and Papalymo's LB3 was kickass. Something happened with Minfilia, I guess. I'd love to see how Thancred and Y'shtola survive the cave in (if they do at all).

The bittersweet mood at the end was great. Our heroes really have nowhere else to go but Ishgard, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Bring on Heavensward!

Alrighty, I'll start I suppose.

I pretty much agree with the entirety of this post. It was in equal parts good yet incredibly frustrating. Best thing about it was the whole way you are fleeing to Ishgard instead of getting a saviours welcome though. That definitely caught me out

Just a simple yes or no will suffice, as I haven't completed the story myself.

Unlike other MMO's the expansion coming up is not self contained, the main story doesn't end because the expansion becomes the main story, the main story of ARR transforms into the main story of Heavensward (You can't do much other then enter Ishgard and unlock the new jobs in the expansion without completing the current main story of ARR). Think of it as a book coming to a close with Heavensward being book 2 of the saga. (or 3 if you count 1.0 as book 1)

Minfillia "consorted" with Ascians several times. Difference is, Urlanger is in the position to listen and not just flail about in fear. I bet both Urlanger and the Ascian will be like "Hey, shit is all fucked up. We need to talk." "Word."
