Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

Aye the community in EU WoW was really elitest in that respect.

NO SCAB PRIEST WE NO TAKE YOU! We taking the Dwarf Priest as he has better racials.

Dwarf priest DC's during raid.

Oh, wee human priest, do you want to come and he...

fuck off.

I always hated this.
WoW Racism is the worst form of racism.

Ideally, I want grouping for xp and big missions (think main storyline missions compared to random quests in FFXI), and soloing for most other things aside from maybe NMs and other things of that nature.

I play mainly support and tanking jobs, which are not generally solo-friendly. When I get the retail version of FFXIV I can almost guarantee that I'll play a healer first, then a tanking job, then a support job of some sort if one is available by then. I just can't imagine how I'm going to solo well as a WHM.

In FFXI I have a 75 WHM, RDM, COR, BRD, PLD and SMN (with a 68 SAM) and I rarely have issues finding a party. I understand that I played high demand jobs, but I also usually built my own party instead of sitting around waiting for invites like a vast majority of people did, and complained about.

My only real issue with FFXI partying is the fact that you really only had one "good" tank for xp parties. NIN can't hold hate well until endgame and WAR isn't a very good tank post-37. That left with you with PLD, unless people were willing to experiment with MNK or SAM, which rarely happened. SE kept adding more DD and support jobs, but never another tanking job. Very displeased with that, and I hope there's more of a balance in XIV.

I think I'd like to see a lot of quests that are soloable, but you get some kind of bonus on top of the usual reward for doing it with additional players.

Aye, I'll be doing something similar, so if GAF'ers are running on the same server give a shout out. I'll be a healer or tank, so we'll be able to swap about if bored.

Hell, I wouldn't mind tiers of quests, defined by how many players are recommended (but not required).

I have no problem putting together a big team for a couple quests if I'm not totally fucked once it disbands. I hated waiting for literally hours for a group in FFXI.

I really like that idea. There's a lot of expansion story content I missed out on in XI because I just couldn't find people to do it with. Either people would have already done it, or they'd want you to help them with a quest first and then suddenly didn't have time to reciprocate etc.

Also, based on what I've read about jobs and skills etc, am I correct in assuming that we won't have to deal with the dreaded "LEVEL DOWN" this time around?

Yeah, I hated that too. Tanking as a pre-37 NIN was tough, but thankfully I had another NIN in my static party to blink with.

Damn do I miss my MNK/NIN. *sigh*

They already said that stats will not matter as much between races. They did say that there will be differences for male/female and other aspects, such as the clan that you choose.
Well, that won't stop guys claiming they chose mithras because they're "the fastest", or "the best thf" :lol...

I think I will play this probably... love the aesthetics and animation.

I was a really late joiner to FFXI and I had nothing but positive experiences with the community. I was a complete noob and got into some linkshell with some of the nicest people I've ever seen in an online game. They went out of their and spent hours with me helping me level the quickest way possible, any time I needed help even if they were miles away they would get someone to come help me, they were like an interactive wiki you had an all access pass to. They were giving me great weapons I'd probably never get otherwise for an extremely long time.

Maybe I got lucky but I'm hoping FFXIV manages to harbor the same time of community. Really made the game great.

I'm having similar experiences with the FFXI GAF crew. I tip my hat to you guys. FFXI seems to bring out the best in people :D

Yup thats what being in a Linkshell/Clan/Guild is all about, or at least it should be. Personallities might clash at times, but overall, team up to get the job done.

Wow sounds like the opposite to WoW where everyones out to stab you in the back and only care about their own kit and progression.

Don't misunderstand. This can happen too. When it does, it definitely hurt more in FFXI because of drop rates.

I stopped playing WOW for at least 6 months now because I got bored, so I have been looking for a new MMO to play. So I hope I will get into the beta.

I think I only played FF XI for a few months in Fairy when the game first came out and quit because it was hard finding a party and grinding. I believe I gave all my gears and money away to prevent myself from starting again heh.

I chose Mithra because I wanted to play as a cat person, didn't really care about race stats :) I hate that they still don't let you play as a male cat person, and wonder why - I mean, they've said this world and races have absolutely nothing to do with FFXI, so why keep the same limitations?

MMO's are incredibly frustrating to me because I want to play as everything. Simultaneously juggling a dozen or more characters just isn't realistic, and yet I always try. Burn out generally comes pretty quickly. Rarely do I ever reach the endgame.

May be that male mithras are suppose to be rare?

You'd probably enjoy this then considering the system they have in place where you can simply switch weapons and play a different role.

But there are no words to describe the satisfaction of sticking to one guy and finishing what the game has to offer and being the king of the lands. No words at all.

I'm pretty sure they will be charging for extra characters too. I'm in the same situation but I think I'm going to have to limit myself to 1, maybe 2 (male and female).

I didn't realize they charged per character... I've never played FFXI.

I just really appreciate the aesthetics of the series... and the animation/gameplay in the videos is very appealing to me. I think I would really like the game.

But a per character charge is something I'll have to think about. I know myself, and how tempted I would be to explore different options, even at a cost. A charge would be prohibitive, I think, almost like being penalized for my own inescapable curiosity. But maybe it won't be so bad... like I said, I've never played so I don't know the first thing about their account setup and whether or not it's structured fairly for both the dev/consumer. I generally don't respond well though if I feel I'm being nickel and dimed to death.

Does anyone remember how the dual boxing worked in FFXI, was it possible to log in two characters under the same account or did their have to be separate accounts?

@recklessmind - It is $12.95/tax for XI, and then $1 per extra char, but the nice part about XI is you can change jobs. Most people use the 2nd characters as a mule anyway because of lolps2 limitations.

@Sebulon3k you need 2 separate accounts.

Does that mean what I think it means? :lol

And, at least initially, a buck per character does not seem prohibitive to me if that's indeed how they'll price them in XIV.

If they keep the inventory system the same way that it was in FFXI without a lot of expandable bank / inventory slots I'm going to have to make two separate accounts.

One for my Mikoto paladin, warrior, thief, ninja and another for my ( taru, can't remember 14 equivalent ) White , Black , Red Mage / Bard.

Dont need to try different characters for that. Just change weapons/jobs, bam new experience.

For awhile there I had 3 accounts with 1 mule on each account :lol
My main character needed alot of gear for leveling all of his jobs plus to keep sets for level cap stuff

I hope this doesn't come back, Ever. Especially if it's in the style that they had it in for FFXI. Have to be better ways of ensuring difficulty than keeping the player from using certain gear.

Probably, I haven't played in a while. But that used to push my buttons when I was doing CoP and Zilart missions

But that's exactly my point! Male Mithra's from FFXI *are* supposed to be rare, and all hanging out in the Mithra homeland somewhere. But Miqo'te's from FFXIV are supposed to be a brand new race in a brand new world, completely separate from FFXI with absolutely no connection. So why keep the exact same rarity in such a similar race?

Because of the way that skills and armor are going to work in 14 I wonder what way the community are going to implement a skill check considering there aren't conventional levels attached to every player, asking someone if they have "Cure 3" or "Refresh" trained just seems a bit silly :lol

It seems silly now, but it won't months after the game is out. :D

Didn't level sync fix all that armor cap BS?
It fixed some, but your level 30 gear was usually better than gear ranked lower from what I could tell. But most of the time this was before that patch is when I had my main account. He got banned then I didnt need all the mules.

Edeuinu said:

Yes and no. If you just needed a sixth person, getting someone without level capped gear to scale down and come in is an option. But in the same sense, I'd say the CoP level cap fights would be really tough for a group of well geared level 75's scaled down to the appropriate level.

Level caps are an interesting concept though, if a bit annoying in practice. It's a nice way to create low level content that you can't just get one or two of your high level friends to blast you through, and lets underleveled characters have a chance to feel useful and help.

Now I'm sure that FFXI didn't do it perfectly (Okay, done with the 30 cap missions, sell that gear and buy 40 cap.. and then 50 cap.... now buy 60 cap), but honestly even WoW kind of fucked up level capped pvp by allowing absurd enchantments on low level gear.

tl;dr I'm not ready to rule out level caps

Never underestimate the community's resourcefulness. Wouldn't surprise me to see a sort of FFXIV Armory made for the PC version.
