Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

Haha good, would have lost my shit if that wasn't the case.

really want into the PS3 beta, I applied long ago with the initial sign-ups for the PS3 beta, but I guess the FF13 code gives people more priority?

The initial signups were PC-only, weren't they? I remember it saying that PS3 applications would be taken later.

Its Ice actually they are standing on Ice. See how the ice is broken and that's why the guy in the front is in water.

... Those are rocks, dude. I actually really like that pic because it looks like any number of local streams, the scenery work (like FFXI) is wonderful. From the composition, it's obvious the "camera" is set up on a tripod 75 or 100cm high on the bank, with the not-elvaan, not-galka, and not-taru standing in a couple cm deep while the not-hume has waded in to get close.

Is this sarcasm? :O
No pretty sure it's ice. Look at how the reflection of the guy in front is al wavy while the reflection of that small guy is like a mirror with scratches on it(you know like ice). Not to mention these so called rocks are white and a bit transparent.

Might be crystals. ;)

Am I the only one who finds it funny how in that last pic the Ranger is in the very front, the mage is in the mid-range, and the melee fighters are in the back looking clueless.

This is how teams wipe, people. :lol

There are ripples around the Lalafells feet, last time i check you can't make ripples in Ice :P

After the Smash Dojo thread I have had a lifetime's worth of screenshot-based speculation.

It's most likely just shallow water... not some pointless 'walk on water' skill. Seriously...

God I can't wait for this. That battle theme just ripped my mind into nostalgia of awesome times in FFXI.

I'm still between Lalafell Lancer and Pugilist. I really hope more classes will be announced and available at the games initial release though. I'd like for them to throw in some sort of Ninja class or another Puppetmaster type class.

I'm hoping we don't have to have a last name though in game. I have one set up in my mind if we do, but I prefer just the one name to be called by in game lol.

Beta footage needs to start leaking out on the net already...I need some 14crack fix. :(

There's a few bits that miiiight be ice/crystal chunks left over from a spell effect, but most of the big clumps (left, bottom-right) are just dry rocks. Compare the coloring to the white rocks on the far shore. :lol

I hope those stay out of the game...ugh.

farming/selling crystals was the dullest shit ever.

It was easy money. Sure youd get 1k a stack or whatever but it was typically enough to pad your wallet to get you by. I used to garden and the money Id make from the crystals would always be enough to buy my next round of seeds and anything else was pure profit.

Gardening was awesome, I hope that makes a comeback. I also made money that way.

I just hope that they have easier ways for people to make money. It was extremely hard to make money as a complete newb. I stuck with my level 10 armor for a VERY long time. Any word about a FFXIV task force? Do not want another early-FFXI economy happening.. no way.

Exactly my point. The guy up front is in water while the others are on ice. :O

Was wondering what that comment meant, didn't play FFXI, because it has no pvp. Since I mellowed out over the years so FFXIV cought my interest.

I really hope there is nothing like the quest in FFXI to get the subjob in FFXIV. That was such a huge road block for me when I initially played. I simply didn't have the time to wait to get into a group in Valkurm Dunes (which could be around 2 hours at times and that doesn't factor in the group being stable. Also if you didn't have a subjob you weren't wanted which made getting the subjob ability sort of a problem.) and then to farm all the required three pieces. It wasn't until a year or two later when I was able to go back that I got that. Even then it was by pure luck I was able to get into a group with another person who had a high level friend who was helping them get the pieces. After that the game opened up for me and I was finally able to travel to Juno and other places and further the story. However that was such a huge block for me. Don't think I've ever encountered a content block like that in any other MMO.

That really soured my feeling on the game and didn't change until much later on. I plan on getting on the ground floor this time around though with FFXIV. So this time I won't have to deal with something like that again by coming into the game after everyone has gotten to a higher level.

I know what you're saying, but I think most people who play FFXI (or have played) kind of enjoyed the 'challenge' of completing quests like that. That is one of the major milestones in your character's development and I personally think it's pretty cool that they made it something you really have to earn. It sounds like you might have had a harder time either because of the server you were playing on, what class you were playing or the point in the game's history you were playing. Early on the only hard part about leveling in Valkurm was finding something to kill because it was so overcamped. Same thing happened after level sync.

But like I say, I completely understand what you're saying, but I really hope they don't oversimplify things with FFXIV.

I don't mind a challenge and having to work for something significant or a milestone. That's fine. I just would like things to be fair and reasonable when it comes to something you must have if you wish to realistically proceed in the rest of the game. The subjob for example wasn't optional from how I understood and saw things. True a number of factors could have been a play such as server, the time in the games life I played, etc. Sometimes I do get hit with long periods of bad luck in MMOs and others a period of good luck. My time in Dark Age of Camelot was when I had tons of good luck. Things just always seemed to go my way when I played. I think I might have used it all up in that game as well. :lol

Pugilist

- With Offensive Stance and Defensive Stance, does the stance change based on the abilities you use?

A: When you select a command, you can decide upon either one based on the position of the Effect Gauge. Moving it towards Offensive is good for attacks and moving it towards Defensive is good for defending. Once a stance is deepened to its maximum point, there will be other abilities that become available.

- Chakra says it consumes TP to heal one's HP, but can the effect be changed by the amount of TP it consumes?

A: The effect does change based on the amount of TP it uses. You cannot choose the amount yourself, but there will be levels to its effectiveness.

- Why does Pugilist have Steal?

A: We wanted to prepare several different avenues for each class to grow. Think of it as a way to put one's skills to a more sinister use.

- Will the damage from Tackle improve the farther away from the enemy you start?

A: Yes, having a running start increases the damage.

Awesome.

And there seems to be a real focus on aoe stuff this time as well, especially with party vs party battles. I guess defensive stances will be better against decent amounts of enemies / lack of a gladiator.

Helps if you have a good linkshell, was always happy to help people with this because it can be a pain to complete.

hell yea! monks unite!
guess i'll make another female elvaan mnk in this game

I've thought it through and I think that the only job that catches my eye will be Archer. I liked being a lone wolf in 11 so I'm going back to that plus there is a 75% chance the High level job armor will be green which is the closest to thf colors.

I'm personally thorned between the choice of being a gladiator or pugilist. After being mostly only a BLM in FFXI for all those years, I want to be closer to the action. :D I think I'll work on both and see whichever is needed the most. :lol

But again there might be an unannounced job that might fit me even more

Im sure it will be easier to make money. With Guildleves and classes actually depending on what equipment you use, things will probably be alot different.

EDIT: Apparently the battle system even tells you what direction you were attacked from. With the way you have to fight parties of monsters most of the time, seems FFXIV will be closer to the other main series FF games battle wise than XI.

On a side note, there had better be ladder climbing animations, and if there isnt a jump command in game, at least give us "action spots" like in VII or XIII.

Goddamn, my brother used my registration code, thinking there was an in-game item for Final Fantasy XIII (I had told him long ago that, if there was such a thing, he was welcome to have it). So, imagine my sheer delight when I discovered that he deleted the email containing the beta code for XIV. Exquisite.

That being said, I like all this hubbub about movement and momentum playing a part in combat. Sounds pretty damn interesting!

I loved to garden. It was so simple with how you would just check on plants everyday and water them. After a few days of that, profit! I forget what it was that I grew but it made me decent gil . I still kept up with it even when I was feeling down on the game and not playing much. I guess that made my friends happy when I quit and gave away all of my gil.

Im assuming theyll handle 14 the same way they handle 11 currently. The task force was a good idea (I used to love reading their reports) and I dont see any reason why theyd ditch it. It helped.

I think someone in this thread said that they went back to the SE registration page and retyped in the FFXIII code and it was displayed on screen again. Might as well give it a shot.

I have seen a few concerns about forgetting to save the codes. I just got mine as I was about to jump into FFXIII. There is some fine print towards the bottom of the page.
If you forget your FINAL FANTASY XIV promotional code, you may review it by logging into SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS and visiting the FINAL FANTASY XIII Feature Page.
So I don't think anybody need worry.

I want badass synth for normal battles but for bosses, I want to think the world is falling down on me. I want his LO type fare for that

Now that's fucking good boss music.

Not that you couldnt make a bad ass synth one too

I'd take something like this for LO style boss music:

Wow Lancer is like...Thief+Dark Knight+ Samurai

With so many weapons listed under Gladiator, I have to imagine that Marauder or another melee class may see more than is currently listed. Hm.

Mmh i'm thinking if they'll make or not a pure healer/white mage at this point. They are mixing some magic in the existing 2 classes. And the final number of 'mages' in the release i presume will be minimum 3 to 5.

BTW, Minstrel needed i nany case. :/ (dreaming a sort of musician who can compose songs only for pure enjoyment ala Lotro)

Hmm. So I used my key from FFXIII and chose an option to participate in the PC beta. Now people are saying the beta is PS3 only. Did I just screw my changes? :(

Can't wait for the PS3 beta and hope I get picked.

Few questions to ask, did the previous consoles versions have the exact same content as the PC versions and how did they control compared to the PC version?

If I like the beta I'll definitely go the PC route if the console version is in anyway gimped.

Oh man, still no word on a 360 version? :(

I'll probably go play it on PC anyway but still, it would be nice to have the option...
