Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

Mmh i'm thinking if they'll make or not a pure healer/white mage at this point. They are mixing some magic in the existing 2 classes. And the final number of 'mages' in the release i presume will be minimum 3 to 5.

BTW, Minstrel needed i nany case. :/ (dreaming a sort of musician who can compose songs only for pure enjoyment ala Lotro)

Might encourage more healers, if its a mixed role - easier to solo when not in party.

I think the idea with the magic classes is versatility, anyone who played a WHM in FF11 can know how screwed over you get at end game.

So I welcome this change.

Hmm, I didn't play much FFXI, but that's all I've heard about it. How elitest it became at end game - if you weren't the right race for the right class, then you may as well uninstall the game.

Can't wait for the PS3 beta and hope I get picked.

Few questions to ask, did the previous consoles versions have the exact same content as the PC versions and how did they control compared to the PC version?

If I like the beta I'll definitely go the PC route if the console version is in anyway gimped.

Same content, PS2 version had a few extra effects and ran smoother, but PC version looked better with higher resolutions. This time building with PC in mind, but that doesnt mean the PS3 version will be gimp in any way. Hoping XIV still controls just as well with a gamepad.

Its great how versatile each class is turning out to be. All seem like they have both decent solo and party capabilities.

Oh man, still no word on a 360 version? :(

I'll probably go play it on PC anyway but still, it would be nice to have the option...

It's a timed exclusive until MS relaxes their stupid Live policies.

So the archers dont have to buy or make their goddamn arrows this time? Just uses MP? Odd and good at the same time, didnt think SE would do that. All disciplines look interesting. Lancer and pugilist for me especially, drg+drk or mnk+thf :o Thaumaturge is also kind of RDM like, loved mine in ffxi.

Sucks that im unlikely to enter the beta, i think this laptop wouldnt run it anyway.

SuperAngelo64 said:
Damn. I can't decide between Pugilist and Marauder...

I think I am going with Marauder myself. I was a DRK main in FFXI and this is the closest class to it yet. I also like the apparent strategy and skill required to play the job well.

Thanks for the info!
It seems that Microsoft is fast at investing money in 3rd party games but it won't even change some live policies for companies that actually WANT their games on the 360 without MS's golden cheque :/

Last time PS2 was lead platform so everything else was gimped by PS2 limitations. PC controls even though I exclusively played on PC were absolutely terrible, the mouse was useless, the keypad was for movement etc... :lol. Everything was designed for the ps2 with a macro system.

This time PC is the lead platform with everything being ported down to consoles. Judging by the XIV screenshots it looks like a no-brainer to pick up the PC version over the consoles just based on how the interface looks like it will work. (not saying the gamepad will work good, just saying it loooks more suited for kb+m)

I played XI on PC the most, and sometimes on my 360 but had a USB keyboard plugged in. The one thing I wish every MMO would have stolen from FFXI's concept is that you played with really just numpad area of your keyboard. It was THE best MMO control scheme ever. Small area, easy to use. I could pretty much play FFXI with just my right hand for the most part. I LOVED that the mouse was 100% useless/pointless. I run out of batteries quick on my wireless ones and so just having a keyboard resting on my lap while I played was great.

That's probably why it was so easy to fall asleep playing the game if you had been grinding for hours upon hours into the 4-6AM spot. :lol

I prefered the fact that you didn't need to use a mouse. Even when I switched from the PC to 360 version I still played it exclusively using the keyboard.

Hopefully the lessons they've learned with XIII (detailed log) will pass over to XIV. Detailed and updated quest/mission journal please.

thats all fine and dandy and I'm sure there will be a keyboard / keyboard + gamepad control scheme, but i'll bet good money that there is a default keyboard + mouse scheme on the pc version this time around.

I for one hope they include full mouse support this time, FF11 controls where ok and you do get used to them, however WASD and mouse is how I like to play my MMO's so I hope they have options for both camps.

I think they said back at gamescon that you could control the characters with WASD. :D

Blacksmiths have treasure hunter / debuff metallic (robot?) enemies, while Miners seem to have sorta Geomage abilities. I guess Weavers will be able to snare/bind enemies with crazy threadwork?

Okay, this is bizarre.

So I was able to find the code for the beta, but... the application demands that I select an option for the "Do you run a game-dedicated fan site" question. ...And there's no "I don't run one" option. But that doesn't stop it from demanding that I select one!

How did everyone else deal with this?

The english beta application page has a mistranslated question... which is that one. Just answer any way you want to.

So are the miners a standalone class or some kind of sub-class? Because they sound awesome.

All Disciplines are a seperate class, I doubt DoH is that much use in battle though.

i really hate to see clippings in the battles, it's annoying and ugly, it was present at the first gameplay reveal, i hope they fixed that

*didn't watch the whole videos* You mean moving through enemies? You can't really do anything about that. If you couldn't pass through PCs and NPCs, people could grief you by grouping piles of monsters at a door or something, and preventing you from entering. You'd get used to it after a while anyway.

this actually use to happen in Everquest big Ogre player blocking the entrance to Sol A while his/her friends, or other characters, gets run of dungeon

In the old days of UO this used to be a big problem also.
If you got boxed in you were done for.

Actually in Ultima Online you could shove past players and monsters but it'd take a hit on your endurance. So technically you could get get trapped or blocked.

Sometimes in XI you could still get blocked by player characters.

It's weird, during the first year or two I heard that a lot, especially in Jeuno around the moghouses, but it never happened to me. I know it pauses you when you try to pass through anyone, so maybe the pauses added up and those people thought they were stuck. Never had that problem myself, though. :lol

It's only really notable when there's a lot of people, like when everyone doing Dynamis is crowded around a mob and you can't slide over for Overwhelm, or the particular point in town that you warp back from Campaign to. It's pretty easy to get around, though, because swapping gear turns you invisible/nonclipping to players for a few seconds.

Didn't people here mention April 1st? Though, didn't exactly see if thats confirmed or not.

Just a rumour floating around from the Japanese beta forums. No word from SE means we probably won't know until it randomly goes up.

Since there have been no mention of skill chains and magic burst at all, will they not be making a return in XIV? I've always thought of them as the most interactive part of the battle system. Rather than 6 people doing their own things (like pretty much all MMO these days), they actually work together. Even a BRD can benefit from "bursting" a song with the right timing.

Jinko said:
Alpha starts on the times listed on the pic, beta starts on the 1st of April.

That makes sense. Alpha testing is probably more focused on login and stability issue with limited gameplay. That explains the short and infrequent sessions as well as how small the group is.
