Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

I played the Korean the Chinese and the US (or was it the EU one, i forget) there was very little (if any) different between any of them.
 
I'm loving the info so far. Still day one for me and hopefully they make it so pre-ordering gives early access to the game? hehe. Oh dear at the little one's dancing. I know there's gonna' be big dance parties in the game. :D

There will be other opportunities to come. Please sit tight and remember not to re-register if you've already submitted a beta application—this will get you disqualified for selection, and we'd hate to see that happen!"

That is not what the beta app website says.

Unless you've heard something real that I haven't, we don't know when the PS3 beta will start.

Many people are using the term "beta" as an overarching term to refer to the overall testing period we're entering, including the alpha. This is kind of confusing, but it's what the developers/reps have been doing. There's been a lot of confusion around it. But really, there's not much reason for us to differentiate between alpha and beta tests, except maybe as an indication that there will be slightly more content available when a new phase is entered. So we might as well call it all beta for now.
 
I kind of hope they next video they show will be of Gridania.

Limsa Lominsa looks like a cross between Bastok and Jeuno, kind of boring if you ask me.
 
Personally hoping for a look at Ul'dah. They've been focusing way too much attention on Limsa Lominsa, which looks decent with the aesthetic they went for, but is probably the least interesting to me.

i'm really hoping the characters don't flash in and flash out when they change equipments like in FFXI, that was really annoying for mages when they are trying to heal a melee.

I also hated macro equipment before doing a ws.
 
The graphics (as it stands) looked very underwhelming to me from the alpha test welcoming video. I don't mind though, I'm more concerned how much time demanding and difficult it will be compared to FFXI.

Looking forward to the gameplay impressions

With abilities tied to your gear, I would be surprised if you can switch gear mid-battle at all.

Well, that sways me towards being a Lalafell quite a bit.

Also, kinda odd how a Hyuran Gladiator, a Lalafell Thaumaturge, and a Roegadyn Lancer all have the same HP and MP.
 
Seems like they tweaked the proportions of the Lalafells? 'Cause I like them now, and I initially hated them.

I believe they've said the differences between races will be much smaller this time around. So maybe they'll be non-existant?

Or those are balance tweaks coming later, since the main point of the alpha test is server stability and the like.
 
Yeah, maybe physical level will give the same boosts and characters will be differentiated by the skill level and by what's on their command bar.

FFXI is FFXI HD. FFXIV is a clear leap forward in every way, especially in terms of shaders, which were almost entirely absent in FFXI.
See doctors about those head injuries, please.

Oh wow, so people really can't see at all. That video shows how plain the game looked at that stage, and it's not because of compression issues or hardware related. The characters weren't still defined, areas were just empty maps with not much layout or objects, look at the way the characters run and move, the animation weren't finished. Seriously people, or are you all just trolling due to being april first?

Didn't it initially say that multiple apps will disqualify you? I remember people warning about it when the beta app site first came up, that's why I said to hell with my PS3 code.
 
I had already applied for the PC version when I input my PS3 code. I better get in the only reason I bought FFXIII is for that freaking code. I otherwise would've waited for it to hit $30 I was in no hurry to play the linear gameplay of FFXIII(and no towns!).

Seriously. Plan ahead. lol. I have a PC and PS3 app in. But the PS3 is under the wife's name.

Same here. :) My wife may actually play it though.


But, honestly, I'm not too sure I want to get into the beta. I was in so many MMOs betas before, and more often then not, I'm finding myself already burn out of a game before it even shipped. Then after release I play for like 2-3 month max and abandoning it. :p I'm thinking I could have stayed in many games longer if my first impression were already with a finished game, not early alpha/beta builds. Also you get to know stuff too good, which brakes a learning curve in release, and, thus, takes part of the fun away.

Or maybe I've just seen too many MMORPGs.
 
Of course it will, even the developers have said FFXI/FFXIV are what they imagined FF to be about. The stories in these games are awesome cause they can always add shit. And the cutscenes are great.

Ive been a bit critical of the games visuals so far, but this is incorrect. When you make a new game for new hardware you cant import old animations. You have new models, new rigs and therefore, new animations.

You re probably saying that the new animations are based off of old ones, but thats not a bad thing.

I personally want to see more life and color in the environments. Cities in XII were a great example of how good cities can look, so Im hoping this game can match that art style and surpass it (and Im optimistic in that regard)

Disagree so hard. FFXII's architecture was trying way too hard. I loved the game, but I felt like at times the architecture clashed with the game's mood. I'm extremely happy to see that they're keeping the simple, beautiful architecture of FFXI, but using the new technical leverage to make the environments more dynamic and breathtaking. I love those cliffsides with vegetation interspersed with the buildings and ships. It's got a nice, real, down-to-earth beauty to it that few fantasy games have captured.

So what you are saying is that you like brown better than grey? I love the clean and wide open look of the FFXI cities. Now the Last Remnant cities (although broken up) are some beautiful cities.

Chances are the lighting and shader system isn't in full effect. People were shitting their pants with WAR was in beta. Soon as it became more optimized through closed beta, the game turned out a lot of better. Y'all are jumping to conclusions. Things are only to get better as the game progresses.
