Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

there's this rumor going on that pooky poo was ratted out by another alpha player by the name of kailea (reported to SE on their forums) and now everyone on BG is hating her/his guts lol..

not sure how true this is but lol

All of these people need to take a chill pill. It was nice of Pooky to account suicide for all of us who don't have access to the beta, and snitching about it was a dick move, but I think it was only a matter of time regardless of whether or not someone reported them on the alpha forums, considering how many different places were linking to the stream.

Going into knight in shining armor mode over a result everyone expected (especially Pooky) is silly.

Let's hope such blatant NDA-breaking stops soon, I'd rather Square-Enix not decide to cancel the closed beta due to leaks, either delaying the game long enough for good internal testing, or shipping the game before it's ready.

That won't happen there are things you can't do in internal testing which require huge networks of poeple.

Wouldn't be surprised. This person makes a thread in the Alpha forum anytime anything is posted anywhere that has NDA info in it. They even complained about Famitsu posting stuff, saying that the magazine was breaking the NDA (when in the article it says that Square reps came to their office to show them the game). No, I'm not joking.

The comments on that page. :lol

"This be the douchebag that got Pooky Poo banned for streaming FFXIV beta. You're a miserable ***, hope you're happy."

"Agreed, must be a sad person that needs to worry about what someone else is doing"

"You are a gigantic ***."

Wow @ the drama. I disagree with what Pooky did, but people on both sides are disappointing/immature.

Games are serious business, guys~

..The game is still in alpha and there is ingame drama already..

PookyPoo from Odin...is this Poof who transfered from Fairy server a long time ago? I know she almost had all jobs at 75 before she left the server and I know she was a girl in real life. I don't know what server she went to though and what her name became, but this sounds about right.

Internet drama aside Poof from Fairy server,if you knew her or asked around, was a MAJOR bitch. 100% always stuck up, talked crap 24/7, was on ALL the time, and anytime you saw her /shout something it would incite internet drama. I really wouldn't be surprised if this was her, because she was a major attention whore on FFXI on fairy. So much so, that that was the main reason she left Fairy is because no one end game really wanted anything to do with her anymore due to bad stigma she earned fairly.

If it's someone else though then that sucks for her, but she earned it. Did anyone record her stream/s to check out? :D

Oh god.I remember my LS trolled her a couple times since she kept annoying us with some effed up /tells urging us to invite her in. :lol

:lol I did some of CoP with her, and I made a guess as to some plot point. 100% just a shot in the dark at something, and she got all pissed off and thought I was spoiling stuff because I had seen a cut scene like 2 minutes ahead of her. I tried to explain no I wasn't and that it was just a guess.(It did end up being right though after we beat the game) I literally got an entire books worth of /tells without me even replying of her just going bat shit crazy. Even though a few days later we met back up for some other CoP missions.(What can I say, the chick DID have every job possible which made CoP a lot easier to form groups when she is flexible to accommodate set ups)

I wasn't on Fairy very long with one character at a time, but I played Royil and Zlatko. Both were tarutarus. My best buddy on there is Vegetto. He still plays and I can't wait to play 14 with him. As far as internet buddies go I've only made a few and I still talk to him on a daily basis.

Nice on the voice acting, guess the opening cutscene/intro battle will be different depending on your country of origin.

EDIT: I wonder what Pugilists will need? Str, Agi, and Dex? They dont really seem to be the VIT type.

Depends if you want to tank on your Pug or not i guess.

while I'd admit the testing forums has its share of idiots, blatantly breaking the nda (streaming) gives SE more reason to not reach out or trust the community in the future, so good riddance.

:lol @ BG hating on some tester for ratting this justin.tv PookyPoo idiot out, how gives a fuck BG is 95% 4chan kids.

Well gota take the rough with the smooth, SE must have known that all shit would break loose the first day of alpha anyway.

From what I can see they don't have much to worry about tbh the game looks pretty well put together and any sensible person knows things are subject to change.

Friend is showing me some SS and telling me about the alpha jankiness. He wound up in the sea and sky twice now (lolffxizonespunhere) and had the texture on his model turn all black. :lol Looks fun tho :(

What with all the bans I wonder if SE will be picking new Alpha testers to take their place.

They will do... or not.

And pass soon to Beta! :)

Have SE told the Alpha testers when the Beta phases begin? As much as I want in on this I don't think I have the patience for an Alpha build.

I think the Alpha is mainly to get servers more stable and to find really big bugs which shouldn't take very long.

I would guess beta will start in 4-6 weeks.

Kosma said:
So judging from Alpha, you guys think this will come out in Q3 or Q4?

Sadly Q4...

Hopes on Q3 but i dont think it.

I would guess September maybe October.

If I were to guess I would say

Alpha will be for 4-6 weeks with a 2 week gap before
Beta 1 which will be 4 weeks
Beta 2 will be 8+ weeks

I think they said PS3 beta will be part of Beta 2.

So about 20 weeks + a few extra for intervals inbetween.

Everything looks great, I do wonder why there was so much connection problem unless they are testing out new netcodes for XIV. The only thing I'm still skeptic about is the relationship between physical level/stats and class. Basically if you retain the same physical level (as well as the points accumulated thus far) when you switch class, wouldn't that make leveling your second class much easier since you're not starting back at the default (essentially you'll have the physical stats of a level 75 in a level 1 class)? Haven't heard of an interpretation I like yet.

Also, remember how much of a pain in the ass it was to level weapon skill as a caster back in XI? Since we can't do it during normal XP party. If weapon level is going to be more important factor in terms of character growth in XIV, I'm curious if casters are going to get the shaft again. Then there are the elemental stats. I bet melee classes can get away without putting any points in them, so doesn't that mean in comparison the casters will have more stats to spread their points out?

@Kagari

Yes is the same woman who sing with TBM.

And the same who sing COP ending.

Cap is 50 and I doubt you will beable to have a PL 50 and SL 1, i'm sure they will have countermeasures in place.

edit -According to BG the physical levels stay as they are when you change class. at least in the alpha.

You get skillups for casting as the skills are linked to the weapon, and you learn new skills/spells as your rank increases in that skill.

Well, that's kind of general. So obviously there will be a Staff (weapon) skill. Are we expecting Divine or Elemental skill like in XI that affect different group of spells as well?

There doesn't seem to be magic skills, as in elemental, enfeebling, etc, so i guess that casting the spells will skill up the staff or club, so i don't see a problem for mages.

This was interesting...
Komoto: In the alpha, there is a cap on Physical Levels, and you can't redistribute points already spent on parameters just yet. Later on, we want to allow players to reallocate points in case they focus too heavily on a certain attribute and want to adjust that. We also plan to make it so you cannot simply max out every attribute, so players will have to work to find a good balance. For example, you may raise a certain skill in order to play a Warrior-type class. If you later want to go as a Disciple of Magic, you can then reallocate those points into something more beneficial for a magic-user

- there will be some sort of respec option for stats later on
- stats are capped to a point. you can't specialize too much into a few stats

Makes sense they'd go that route given what they have done with the classes. I like it there is no reason for this game, or any RPG for that matter, to make point allocation unchangeable.

Yeah, but in the end the concept is still pretty stupid.
The point system is there for everyone to be different, but it's all useless if you can respec. (even if respeccing is "hard" and tedious to obtain)

The simplest solution is for the game to distribute the points, skills and spells automatically per job.

Yeah, no thanks, I'd much rather have the stat allocation and the ability for folks to set up their jobs in unique and experimental ways.

The system is about variety and niches, not for people to be unique flowers. I just wonder about the frequency of respecing needed. If it's something you might rig up for an individual bit of play when x or x is needed or what.

Maybe it'll be like FFXI's blue mage, respec then wait a bit for it to take effect. Maybe you can only respec in certain spots, mog house for example.

Final Fantasy XIV Staff Details Alpha/Beta Schedule
PS3 owners to get access in phase two of beta.
Posted Apr 10, 2010 at 01:13, By Anoop Gantayat

Coinciding with the start of the Final Fantasy XIV alpha test, Famitsu.com was given a chance to quiz the development staff on a variety of game issues. Here's a summary of the Q&A.

The staff first shared a rough schedule for the game's alpha and beta programs.

The alpha test will take place in just one world. The world is named "Shadowlord." They'll be conducting tests three days a week, with each session lasting about four hours. These tests will be conducted in Japan, North America and Europe, each region separate from one-another.

Once they've gotten the basic functionality of the game stable and conducted tests on server load and so-forth, the'll move into phase one of the beta test. Phase 1 of the beta will use the same version of the game as the alpha, but will have multiple worlds running in parallel. There will be some adjustments made in the switch from alpha to phase 1 beta that will require them to do a data wipe.

After they've adjusted the game to fix problems and reflect the opinion of test players, they'll move to beta phase 2. From here, the game will run 24 hours. The content of the game used in this beta will have changed considerably and will be closer to that of the final game. The PS3 version of the beta test will begin here.

Phase 2 will gradually expand with additional worlds as the staff runs load tests on having hundreds of thousands of simultaneous connections.

The final service-in for the game will come following a few weeks of open beta testing.

The current alpha test version of the game limits play to just the Limsa Lominsa city-state and its surroundings. This will be the case throughout the alpha and beta tests. You won't be able to access the rest of the world until the final version. Limsa Lominsa and its surroundings account for less than 1/5 of the final version's full world, according to the staff.

Other topics addressed in the Q&A:

Character Names
FFXIV lets you input both first and last names for your character. The reason for this is that each world will allows multiple players to have the same family name or same first name -- although two players can't have the same pairing of first and last names, of course. This will give players a chance to more easily play using the name of their choice. When using chat, there's a system in place that will make it so that you won't have to input the full name.
Different Starting Points
What kind of differences can you expect when starting in a different country? Each country will have a different story. Additionally, each city will have different facilities and unique atmosphere.
Enemies
There will be combat-loving monsters who attack you. Additionally, there will be powerful enemies unrelated to the scenario for players to go after. None of this is in the alpha.

Bitchen yo.

I hope the majority of alpha testers will feedback about the mouse controls. Its not about IF you adapted to FFXI's controls or if you think 100% keyboard was fine for you, its about freedom of choice ffs. Its not because you implement a new option that you kill the previous one. And Dpad controls without strafing... please, in 2010.. on PC.. no arguments in the world can sway my opinion that its idiocy. They're basically forcing you to use a gamepad and its in the alpha that peoples have to tell them FU.

Agreed, I think its fair to say that if it doesn't get fixed in the Alpha it will in the Beta, too many people will complain about the controls and it will put off a lot of potential customers.

Pooky Poo wasn't necessarily Poof. That was just speculation. Learn to read! :D

Though I can honestly see how she very well could have been. Both of them were very much attention whores, and had the same way of barely-discernibly ranting. Was so awful for a few days when she transferred to Phoenix. I kind of felt bad for her because it seemed at first she was trying, with a new name, to be "normal" but that was impossible with everybody shouting about how much of a "bitch" she was. However as soon as I ran into her personally I regretted ever feeling the slightest bit bad or her.

The first and last name is actually a very good idea, now you can be less worried about someone taking your name. :D

Yeah! And now we have:
Cloud Strife
Cloud Strif
Cloud Strief
Cloud etc.
etc. etc.

Feel like it's gonna be annoying seeing so many Clouds and Sephiroths everywhere. >_<

Btw, for those of you who didn't see Pooky Poo's live stream, there's some HQ videos of it on YouTube right now.

Yeah that was a long time after you left, which was also after that SoD cop tiamat encounter.
