Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

Tell them to play it on PC. If they can't even do that odds are they wouldn't play FFXIV for very long anyway.

Are we sure that's the reason? Pretty schizophrenic online policy if so, it's not like people aren't playing FFXI on their PS3s.

It's held up in approval rather than on Square's end; when the game was announced it was actually going to be an X360 timed exclusive. Cross-platform play and MMO play with Silver are apparently two big no-nos that were specially permitted for FFXI and PSU only because of how hard they were trying to crack the Japanese market then.

I've not only seen Alpha combat, but played it in many tests. Beta may be faster then Alpha, but it's still slow.

EDIT: Like I said, it's hard to tell with just the one video that's out there. I am more interested in higher level combat in groups since that's where most of the time will be spent. I'm thinking the speed will be better for doing something like that, but looks slow while fighting solo.

So you've seen this video?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eONoACmL5AM

It's way faster than FFXI and exactly what I want. Any faster and it'd be unnecessary.

I don't want combat to look like I've got a Kraken Club and permanent Hundred Fists. I'm fine with the beta version speed; I'd even take it a smidge slower, though that's entirely up to the player and how they want to manage their stamina.

Yeah, I'll have to see how it actually plays before I decide. I hope to be playing mostly in a group after the first few levels so it should be just fine for that.

If they can make fights engaging and really deliver on this "timing and every decision will be important" thing they keep reiterating, then attack rate is not even something that should be an issue.

Not to be all "hurr durr my game is better than yours" but I'd rather have a slow combat system that makes me time my hits, time my guards, and choose my skills/stances wisely than something like, say, Aion, where the speed of things is turned way up, all except for exp rate and drop rate. I haven't played that game but by the looks of things after a certain point the "fast" battle system just made the grind even more monotonous.

That is not the reason at all. MS were willing to let cross-platform play with FFXI. I don't see why it would be different with FFXIV.

My money is on money itself. Sony probably struck a time-exclusive deal or something. Who knows.

They've changed their policies since then.

Here's the info from their site:

http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/benchmark/na/index.html
[8000 and over] Extremely High Performance
Easily capable of running the game on the highest settings.
[5500–7999] Very High Performance
Easily capable of running the game. Should perform exceptionally well, even at higher resolutions.
[4500-5499] High Performance
Easily capable of running the game. Should perform well, even at higher resolutions.
[3000-4499] Fairly High Performance
Capable of running the game on default settings. Consider switching to a higher resolution depending on performance.
[2500-2999] Standard Performance
Capable of running the game on default settings.
[2000-2499] Slightly Low Performance
Capable of running the game, but may experience some slowdown. Adjust settings to improve performance.
[1500-1999] Low Performance
Capable of running the game, but will experience considerable slowdown. Adjusting settings is unlikely to improve performance.
[Under 1500] Insufficient Performance
Does not meet specifications for running the game.

I'm not sure on how accurate that is, because my laptop gets about 1000 and it's able to run the Alpha without any issues.

FFXI was always against their "policy" but they allowed S-E to break them for the sake of having FF on the console. Same should be applied here eventually.

FFXIV Core interview from E3

Q. Do you intend to have things like guilds and guild banks for people to share?

A. For FFXI there was Linkshells and for FFXIV we will have Linkshells as well along with something like a higher level Linkshell system called a Company. In this Company, things you do will affect things you own in the game. Also, larger Companies will be able to have something like a community website that is more personallized that will display stats. There will be more information about this Company later on in development.

Finally a minimap! The graphics are looking much better as well. All it needs is the ability to set custom key binds (or at least multiple control schemes) and I'm a day one buyer.

Interesting to note that they break out the Battle Actions, Traits, and Synthesis Actions. And Battle Actions goes up to 52 points. Definitely looks like higher levels will grant more points and that higher level traits will use more than one point to slot. Very cool to see.

Uh, the minimap is already there in the alpha, what are you on about? :D

I certainly like the new menu bar thing and the UI seems much improved. GIVE.

Hi-res not that I know of, but characters/enemies/items renders have been released since last year from time to time, there's probably links to all of them in these thread somewhere, but you're better googling them

I want to play this game so much!

Hopefully we can find a server where a bunch of GAFFER's can party with each other.

Hopefully, It'd be great to play with you guys.

So I just saw the live reports from e3 and I must say quite the improvement, I like the pacing of the battle system compared to how it is back on FFXI and what? 3d?? thats insane...I so hope I get into the beta (assuming they didn't start it up yet)..either way I'm definitely on this day 1!

Another terribly optimized and disappointing benchmark, just like RE5 when it first came out.

But here's the primary reason, it seems. NO crossfire support, the 2nd GPU is being ignored (check GPU load):

They better get on the ball and get this shit working decently by the time it releases. I was expecting rock-solid 60fps, but only the 720p was smooth, the 1080p was dipping everything time shit happened. It looks good but not that good. This is a fucking console port.

Yeah, as benchmarks go this one is pretty awful. No Crossfire/SLI support, and almost no options outside of two resolutions. :lol

Seriously, I would've at least liked 3 different quality presets and a wide range of resolutions. Needs more 1440x900.

That trailer was great, gave me the urge to explore the world and live adventures, which is basically the best way to sell me a MMO to me. Missed the bandwagon for XI, but I will be there for this.

Benchmark is super CPU dependant (and Intel slanted).

Scored a 3860 with a 4870 and e8400 @ 4ghz

Scored a 3378 with a 5970 and e8400 @ 3ghz :lol

So then, has beta officially started? I was hoping for an open beta announcement at E3.

Also a random comment on the character design; the "mithra" race look too human now. They basically look like a human girl with fake cat ears.

No, beta hasn't started. The build at E3 is pre-beta.

You can give em the mithra nose too.

WOW? hax :lol

from my 1080p tests with a 4890 & a q6600 once I passed 2.7GHz scores never went up

2.4GHz 1500~
2.7GHz 2500~
3.0GHz 2500~
3.3GHz 2500~

Have they said anything about partying up? I've a friend who loved 11 but I've never played an mmo. The combat looks allright, so I'm interested. I heard it was really hard to get with your friends in 11, though. Are they addressing this?

Wasnt hard at all. Its just that you really couldnt solo kill anything after a certain level, so it forced you to party with people. Then you had to find a camping spot, instead of just going around the environment killing things, which made things slow.

XIV is improving on that and seems to be taking more from normal FF games and a little from recent MMOs.
