Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

it seems that my 360 pad doesnt have enough buttons :lol

Which is why the game should support the mouse/keyboard properly and not run like crap.

It's beyond me how this game got released to the public at this stage.

(Cross-posting impressions from online thread)

Played about 20 minutes in Gridania, some thoughts-

-Opening cinematic is fantastic. I think I prefer it to the boat, but maybe it's because I've seen the boat about 10 times now.
-Neat to see "rank up" appear with a small, not annoying fanfare, on your character.
-UI performance is better, but still not entirely smooth. Might have something to do with Gridania performance being not as good (heh) as Limsa's.
-Critical error after 20 minutes, running to the first camp. I, for one, was shocked.

Feels like the Gridania starting zone music is a little too mysterious for it's own good... made me sleepy almost instantly. Great looking area, even if it taxes the system too much.

Will put in more time later but I'm still left with the "this could be (or will be) fantastic, but I wish they wouldn't launch it so soon". Lots of potential, but still feels too early.

So, this game won't run with my video card...

Radeon X1800

This has been a known issue since the closed beta started.

You suck Square.

I dl'd the beta client downloader, but every time I try to launch, it shuts down immediately and says "FINAL FANTASY XIV BETA VERSION has stopped working, Windows is searching for a solution" etc. etc.

is my computer just not up to the task or is this a different problem?

I guess you don't understand what a beta test is.

the you should understand why there are glitches instead of wondering why it was open for testing.
lolonda

having a fucking retarded keyboard and mouse control scheme with zero options is not a glitch

It has more than enough really. Dont forget about pressing the analogs in. Start button for map, back button/select for auto-run. Triggers for macro menus, X for emotes, Y for main menu, A to confirm, B to cancel, RB for active/passive mode, LB to check out status icons.

Left stick in (L3) for view change, Right stick in (R3) to lock on. D-pad for changing targets/scrolling in the party menu. No need for extra buttons.

Its actually a pretty good set up, and makes you only need the keyboard for typing/macro entry.

Might not be a glitch, but some hardware companies consider awkward control designs as a bug, until waived (£££) that's it.

I'm not referring to glitches, I'm talking about how poorly it runs and some of the design choices.

Write SE a letter? We knew all this from Alpha. Its not really new. I thought people that need this kind of controls either gave up or moved on to another game, or is willing to wait until this gets fixed. Its kind of a waste of time to continue to harp it.

Maybe, but Square has said previously that they aren't going to fix the problem of no hardware mouse, so they must think that bug is squashed.

Oh and just for performance gauging sake, a Radeon 4870 can run the game at 60 for the most part (away from larger crowds) with most of the settings turned high.

Left AA at 2x since the game really doesnt seem to look that much better past it. At least at 1440x900.

They have to do something about the camera, even tho the game works perfectly with a pad, if they don't want to bother with the mouse, they have to sort out the arrow keys, and 'unlock' them for customization.

Wait...is it still IJKL for camera? C'mon Square, you can do better than this!

?...It's barely even started londa

better get used to complaints about performance, controls and design decisions because there's gonna be a shitload more of it from now till quite a bit after release as more and more people try the game.

At least you can move it to other keys now, some people might feel comfortable putting them on WASD, I dunno, but I don't like that, I want to control the camera in the keyboard with my right thumb, fuck the analog sticks lol

Are you using d3doverrider, this game hates it.

This definitely helped thanks. Now the game runs mid twenties. It isn't perfect but it is certainly playable.

I suck with PC controls.WASD screws me up for some reason.

How about numpad for camera control? Is that possible?

I can only assume half your post is directed at someone else, cause nothing I've been discussing has anything to do with raging over unfinished software and everything to do with their clusterfuck of re-rolling what is effectively a second closed beta. Not only did past testers fail to receive any kind of tangible "Thank You", they took it one step further and instead gave them a big fat "Fuck You" with the erroneous Prime Time message informing them they did not have to sign up, letting any random yokle occupy their slot.

The second part of my post was just me clarifying my position, it wasn't directed personally at you or anyone else.

However I will specifically reply to the point of yours quoted above about SE's "big fat 'Fuck You'":

The truth is that Square don't care about you. You're basically an IP, one of a large number that together forms a load test. They aren't being capricious or spiteful, they just have bigger issues to deal with right now - like their their registration servers falling over under the pressure of a sudden traffic spike.

Sorry you "lost your spot to a random yokle", but I'm certain it wasn't personal, they didn't set out to "trick" you, or the other beta-testers. Same as when I got an invalid beta-code from Gamescom the other week, its disappointing, but you know what: Seeing as it didn't cost me any coin and its during a beta-phase where unexpected fuckups go with the territory, I didn't feel the urge to vent my displeasure on the internet!

For the record, I'd also wager that at various points during your correspondence during sign-up, SE will have thanked you for volunteering to be part of their beta program. Trouble is, what you are expecting isn't thanks, its preferential treatment. And I'm sorry sir, until you pays your money and becomes a customer, they aren't beholden to you in any way, shape, or form.

Sorry if this summary seems harsh, and I'm not being an "apologist" for SE (If you're unhappy with their services/products there are plenty of other vendors out there that may treat you better), I'm just calling it as I see it.

What are people freaking about the controls? I just used standard WASD and mouselook and it worked just like any other mmo :p

Even found an option to invert mouselook which was something not even Aion had at launch!

To be fair, that's what closed betas are for, open betas are for stress tests. Something that seems to be a rather large issue right now.

Do the NPC shops sell more gear than just starter items now?
Not really. There were a few ~20 rank pieces I saw, but the majority of the stuff was the beginner and teens gear.

And the cheapest shield was 40k+. I have no idea where they expect a beginner to make that much money from. So far the few leves I did only left me with 2k.

Sounds like Aion, ridiculously priced vendor trash that no motherfucker would ever buy.

yeah Im playin on Logitech Dual Action gamepad and game instantly became funnier and more interesting, no more camera problems, and I think this is the way to play this one

pad + keyboard for occassional chat/trade

My problem with pad/keyboard is that chat isn't really "occasional". I just hate having to put down my character controls to go chat. Though I suppose when I'm in a chat heavy period I could just use the keyboard controls. But I'd just much rather have them get both options right, especially since it really isn't that difficult to do in the first place.

I was able to play the game for a while (in the Ul'dah area), surprisingly it worked on my AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (single core, 2.20 ghz)!
I also have 1.50 GB RAM and a Radeon HD 4650.

It was quite slow motion ( and it took 2 minutes at best to load a new cutscene), but I could run around in the city and the desert, and talk to the npcs, and fight some low level monsters.
And the cutscenes were sluggish but acceptable.

Afterwards I even found out that I had textures set to high and shadows to standard!
Maybe it would run kind of acceptable if I set those to lowest.

Sadly it crashed after a while of running in the desert, and the beta now crashes every time I start it, the client just gets stuck... maybe that has something to do with my low cpu/specs, but I ran it least once.

So I definitely wouldn't recommend getting this game if you have a really old CPU like mine, because the crashing issue would be terrible if it happened every time, but maybe it's not related to my hardware. (people with good computers seem to get crashes too)

Anyway, I liked what I saw a lot, I loved the cutscenes, music, character costumization is great, and the scenery in and around Ul'dah is beautiful, both graphics and art wise.

EDIT: I got the game to run again, but yeah the crashing is definitely because of my low specs.

Some of the new level 10~ guild leves I have seen give out 8k gil. If the level 20~ ones have the same incremental Gil from bloodshore I wouldn't doubt seeing 14k to 20k+ gil for each guild leve in the not to distant future. Its obvious that SE doesn't intend to let new people start with the ability to have a shield (or else they would have just given it to people at the start or through an easy quest). You need to want it, but at least they actually give you the option from vender compared to the only source in closed beta being crafters. Furthmore Behests (in my experience) seem to be occuring more often and give a decent amount of gil back as well. Got 340 gil from the level 1 camp behest in Gridania earlier and its probably closer to 2k for the level 10ish~ ones. The first day you might have gil issues but I really don't think gil will be an issue at a quickened pace. If anything once the economy stabilizes at this gil influx vender trash really will become vender trash because the actual crafted stuff will be even higher due to global gil inflation.

Can you change the keyboard controls so that arrows = camera rotate?

That's the only buy-game deciding factor for me.

So for some reason this morning I was able to play the game fine.

I come home from work, try to log in and get an error:

"Unable to load direct x device"

What the heck changed?

Well anytime you play a game with a pad and have to chat, you're going to need to sit the controller somewhere to type. Monster Hunter, PSO, anything.
