Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

Wow, thanks :lol

I have to say, the game definitely becomes more fun when you actually know what to do. They don't really make digging that information available easily, though.

Dude, double clicking on dozens of dudes with fake dodgy "shiver me timbers!" accents to find a fucking quest is totally hardcore and immersive.

How are people getting lost at the start? The npcs mark stuff on your map and the journal practically guides you to your next destination?

Are you guys getting lost not checking the menu out or something? Its pretty direct. Say like with Limsa or Ul'dah starting, sure there are a few random npcs making the same trip as you, but its pretty much a straight line to your first destination.

After that the game teaches you the basics of how to fight, following up with some member of the adventurers guild giving you a run down of whats up in the city and where you should go next (usually an aetheryte at the nearest area right outside town). You go there, and then the npc linkshell icon (like a cell phone) lights up and you use the main menu to check it. If you dont feel like doing that, just check your journal after you see "____quest has been updated" to see where you should go next.

Its really not as hard as some people are making it out to be. The little emote training after awhile does seem odd (dunno about Gridania, apparently it's suffering some animation glitch), but the once you get a grip on what they want you to do (italicized words and emote animation examples) its smooth sailing throughout.

The NPCs even have their own chat boxes (important ones anyway) so you can pay attention to whats going on without getting chat flooded by others around you. Dunno if there will be regular side npc quests in retail (I believe they'll still be in the for of leves, but maybe something from those aetheryte nodes aka small check points?).

EDIT: If you look at the journal and then choose show map when looking at that quest, everything should be more or less lined up for you.

Also every Aetheryte (teleport location) has a built in beginners manual called "Call to Adventure". Give that a read too.

I managed to update my game and im at the login screen however, the game doesn't completely fit on my screen. Can anyone tell me how I set it up so it fits my screen?

Start menu -> Programs -> FFXIVconfig -> turn to full screen. Or at least that should work. Buffer might have to be set at resolution.

If it still isnt full screen, just reset your PC and it should work.

EDIT: For some reason the updater has been working fine for me now.

Ul'dah is gorgeous.

Honestly, for those of you saying they want to like the game because they like the graphics/design/fact that it's FF/etc. but can't get into it the way it is now, I'd recommend you jump in 6-12 months after launch. By then not only will there be fixes for all the issues we have, but plenty of content as well. I guess I can't guarantee all that, but it seems pretty likely that that's how things will go down.

Granted this game, as in FFXI fashion, is basically trial and error.

The game is just telling you the basis, and you have to find out everything else. It's fine if people doesn't like that method, to each its own, anyway. So fair enough if people aren't willing to know the game, but if they do, they will most likely find a very enjoyable game, and giving it time, with many things to do.

Don't want to bother with a paid-beta? Cool, come back in 6 months - 1 year. Many people didn't get to see how fantastic FFXI was just because there wasn't a tutorial telling them how to kill a rabbit. Too bad if people don't want to explore and learn through experience.

i know that now, after playing weeks of closed beta, when i first started i didn't have a clue though.

Have you mananged to find a cheap shield, i'm seeing some for like 40k :/

Ul'dah is gorgeous.

On the sunny time of day, definately, really good looking HDR in this game.

Lol, SE seriously did't do any usability testing with the GUI. The archaic design really throws most of the modern MMO players off. After last night, all my RL friends have canceled their preorders. Good luck SE, if the game still exists in a year I maybe able to convince them to give it a shot again but the situation is feeling like FF11 all over again except worse.

Sorry to refuse to add to the negative, but I played for a couple of hours last night and had a LOT of fun! Little chuggy for sure, but whatever, its a beta.

I do find it funny how over the last 5 or so years people aaaalways bitch and bitch about too much handholding in games, and as soon as it goes away? Surprise! More bitching.

So GAF I want to do some blacksmith, and armorer but I need some gil. Is there a good was to make money in this game?

For now? Just Guildleves and selling random stuff you come across.
Crafters can do Local leves: Make stuff for people with certain crafting classes. Guild leves that are for people rank 10 and higher (can take them on a little lower if you want) usually give upwards of 5,000 gil...even more if you cash in previously completed leves towards them.

Turn off ambient occlusion and depth of field, that should help.

So barren and lifeless tho, it makes me sad, maybe its the server or w'e.

Monster population better be upped by retail. Last time the population was alright, just too many higher level monsters near town. Now its too few monsters (around Thanalan anyway) in general.

Not yet...I want to say the game is overcharging, but then again...I dunno how easy it will be to earn gil in the long run.

One thing i've noticed is that you can equip any item at any level, however, unless you are at the optimal rank for the item, you wont see the full benefits?

Sucks that maintenance is now...was about to jump on for a little and see if I could hand out more pearls/mess around for abit.

I dont want to do too much since retail is just around the corner, and I know im starting in Ul'dah at launch.

Certain things for the game just need better tutorials/introductions.

I had a pain in the ass figuring out how to do my first crafting leve as an Armorer. Glad I had my LS to fall back on and have them explain it to me, but Jesus was it so unnecessarily unintuitive.

They are raging because this game was meant to specifically target casual players. That's the mantra SQE has been repeating over and over since it was announced.

Im actually ok with stuff like that though, I mean when the game ships in theory you should have an instruction manual for that stuff.

Also I dont mind the game chugging some if it looks prettier, Ambient Occlusion and DoF are staying ON :)

Eh, whatever. Thats PR politics. Im enjoying it :)

I think I'm going to try some crafting today. What should I start with to get me into things quicker (question to those who bothered crafting a bit in previous betas)?

I've started approaching this from a Monster Hunter frame of mind, which has helped my opinion of the game quite a bit. SE still has a lot to learn about getting people started. I'm sorry you die hards, MMOs SHOULD hold your hand to start you off in their games. The better ones do and SE should have learned from this. From a certain point, they can let go.

Yeah, they need to move the crafting tutorial out of the chat box, and make it occur before you actually start crafting. Dunno what S-E was thinking with that.

Also seeing that other guy named Tekkaman Blade makes me want to change my name :lol

Would've just gone with Tek Godhand...but that would make me want to main Pugilist...which might not be a bad thing.

Just not sure what the most popular class will be, and which classes will be lacking in population melee wise.

On the bright side they're kinda learning. Rank 1 guildleves now make guardian aspect option automatically pop up.

If it has a steep learning curve, it's going to be hard to attract players.

MMO is all about community, so learning curve is an important aspect.

Not really. It's supposedly been the focus of the entire game. You hear it from every member of the team that speaks publicly.

So it should be a concern to SQE when people unfamiliar with MMOs, unfamiliar with SQE MMOs, or unfamiliar with PC games are bitching about the difficulty and the lack of help for casual/noobie players.

Yes in THEORY, but I have a strong feeling that they won't have a good page dedicated to how to go about it. The process at first is just a scratch your head scenario, but once you figure it out it's easy.

Guildleves, gathering, and other things have not been a mental hurdle by any means for me. I've played enough MMOs to pick it up pretty fast and roll with the punches. A lot of people also forget if you are not sure bout something---ASK PEOPLE.

On another note:

I respected FFXI so much because the solo play really stopped for most around level 10-12 and the rest of the game you played with others. I hope FFXIV sticks to that idea and just ditches this solo business, because too many people playing beta right now refuse to even talk to others, let alone quest with them even though it's beneficial for them to do so. Why the hell do people play MMORPGS to be anti-social and not want to work together? It's beyond me and catering to those people needs to stop across the board. This game is doing a good job with leves to let you play with 2-6 people and up the difficulty accordingly so you are rewarded better, but people just don't want to do it that way.

It'll take half a year to fix a lot of the stuff after it launches, but I'm not that worried. I've found out enough on how to play it and enjoy it, and I know it will get better. I'm keeping my CE pre order. :)

God bless TomTom's creator. Today's drivers would be dammed without them, right?

This is the problem with this generation, everything has to be spoon fed, wait did I just say that :Z

I think SE lied to us though when they said they had looked at other MMO's on the market to get some idea's of what players wanted.

They sure as hell didn't look at WoW and Aion for any idea's :lol

I think a lot of people don't take any notice of the tutorials and then they come on here whining because they missed it in the chat log, it is there you just need to make yourself aware of whats in the box, yes it could be much better, but then if your missing it so could you.

I get what youre saying, what I meant is that I dont care as long as Im having fun. Seeing as I am, they can say whatever they want, lol

Don't bother with mouse (or keyboard) its a software implementation that will lag because its performance is directly related to how much FPS you are getting.

I switch back and forth, and the 360 pad works fine, just don't expect any 360 icon prompts or anything like that.

Damn right, spoon feed me, wax my ass and massage my feet all at the same time damnit.

Is anyone else having serious problems logging in? Keep being booted to the login screen.

Anything one can do to get around that?

I started on woodworking on beta for shields, so i did

For what i remember..

WW (to 5): Lauan lumbers then Lauan half masks
Arm (to 5): Brass squares, then Brass buckles
leather (to 10): Sheep leather, then Straps, Vamps and Spetchs, then same as before but with dodo stuff.

I ended up with WW10, Arm10, LW19, Alch10, about 700k-800k and liking crafting a lot, too bad its still a clusterfuck to craft:lol

I think they may be doing a little maintenance, or so I've gleaned from the Online thread.

Yesterday, I was ready to never play this again. After some reflection, I think i'll push ahead with it. It's a really compelling game world and I bet that they're gonna help it along after release. Plus, I'm just so tired of WoW and so completely uninterested in The Old Republic mmo that I'm kinda lacking in other options.

:lol

I think maybe are confusing babying someone through a game and a good tutorial.

For me this game just does not have a polished tutorial/s for things. It's not even about spoon feeding.

The best example I can think of is this game is like if you were to just start Starcraft 2 for the first time ever. No RTS experience behind you at all. No tutorials, no campaign, weird placement of things on UI, goofy font for things, etc etc and then made you play a Diamond league match right away. Good...luck.

Maybe that's a bit hardcore of an example and a bit unrelated, so another would be playing Final Fantasy 8 or 12, but 8 starts on Disc 2, and 12 starts 1/3d of the way in. All the stuff is there, but the prompt work before it is lost.

Personally here's how they should have approached it. You watch your intro cut scene, it teaches you how to fight, you land in town. Now you are in an instance. Few NPCS in front of you each to describe in a cut scene fashion how things work. 1 NPC for battle craft guildleves, and it then has you do 1 leve with a temporary crystal for that instance area. 2nd NPC has you do a gathering leve. Third does crafting. Fourth NPC can then be the continue story NPC and could also act as a "i don't need tutorials just let me out of here," which then prompts the story portion you'd have to do from NPC 4 either way.

You then land in town with the last thing the NPC says, if you forgot anything talk to NPC on your left there. I've marked a point on your map to head to(continue story). The map opens it shows you the spot, and then the NPC also says this is where the guild leve counter is(points it out) and this is the way out of town(points it out). Don't forget adventurer you can always do a /shout or /say to ask people for help.(npc waves goodbye)

That'd be a MUCH better approach then how things are now.
