Final Fantasy XV has a wait mode (turn based implementation of the combat system)

Haven't we been in wait mode for the past ten years?

Wait mode does make me more interested for sure.

Well I still want them to increase the font size. Not sure why it still seems like its microscopic.

That being said, Wait mode seems like it really would be better to press a button to use your wait bar. Not to just...stop pressing buttons. Unless it really feels that seamless.

I'd have to get my hands on it, but I think I'd prefer the no-input wait mode. In Duscae and Platinum I seldom held still while fighting, and there are so many buttons to fiddle with already. I can imagine using wait mode just for magic targeting in some fights, and the idea of letting go of analog, time immediately stops, aiming magic, then time starts as soon as I trigger spell and I'm moving again is very appealing.

Still, seems it would be fairly trivial to make it an option to have it button press dependent.

Think they'll release another demo shortly with wait mode?

Why don't you spend sometime in telling us how exactly do you think that wait mode fails to deliver, instead os judging the whole product on "more options" = bad?
I don't know if it'll fail to deliver, but they specifically mention how the mode isn't just to have an easy mode, infact, they start by mentioning fans of turn based combat.
I also don't think "more options = bad", and i never said as such, but i also believe in the consistency of design, and i believe in the notion that you can't appeal to everyone all the time, despite people trying to do so constantly (and usually failing at it).

What i am, is skeptical about a mode that came out of nowhere to appeal to fans that didn't like the change to action combat, when the core mechanic of the game wasn't designed around it.

It won't impact the base game though, so whatever.

I played myself thinking this was actually something else. This is a very loose definition of turn based. It's just the standard wait pause button from previous FFs altered slightly to fit XV's combat.

This is a perfect first post if there ever was one. ROFL ^_^

Today has been a good day for XV news for me. I was kinda lukewarm yesterday after Titan showing but today the future seems pretty bright. Between this and the impressions from people who have played I'm very much hyped.

It's funny how much nicer the information today has been in comparison to yesterday's poor showings at the conferences.

On topic though, this mode seems to add a distinct tactical advantage to battles that would be impossible in the normal active mode. I wonder if certain fights will lend better to using one system in favor of the other.

It's not even turn-based in any sense. It's just a pause button.

I'm not using this in my first playthrough, if at all. Just completely breaks the flow of battle. I can understand pausing to go through a menu to use items, but this is almost like a pause to help you with your execution, which kind of ruins the idea of being able to simultaneously strategize and execute on-the-fly in an action game.

In Duscae, it was possible to get into battles that lasted the entire night cycle (15 min - half an hour).

This mode basically adds 5 more minutes on top of that, lol.

The way this is implemented, this is basically the same thing as adding a wait system to Dark Souls, Bayonetta, Tekken, Kingdom Hearts, etc.

Great for options sake, but you're still taking 10 - 20x the amount of time to think about something that you can naturally respond to via muscle memory and reaction speed after playing the game for awhile.

This could probably wind up breaking the balance of the game, like it would for those other action oriented games I listed.

Ya'll thinking this is anything like a turn based system are going to be disappointed. The vast majority of your actions in combat will be action based. More like playing with cheat engine on. Just thinking about trying to do the Shield Weapon Counter and Knightsguard in wait mode is hilarious to me.

....Holy shit, using the Shield Weapon Counter and Knightsguard in wait mode will break the shit out of this game...

Seems good!

For those posters wondering about VR, it seems like it's not even part of the game. It's just a side companion thing meant as VR testing grounds.

The videos they had also looks so much better than what they showed in both conferences. I wonder why they did not just show this instead. Lack of time allocated for SE?

Worst case scenario for this is that Wait mode is broken as hell in terms of unbalancing any possible challenge on offer (then again, a bunch of folks here loved the challenge-free XIII-2) and Active mode is broken due to the janky targeting, hit detection, evasion response/camera issues that have remained persistent all the way through the game's development.

So one setup is effectively an insta-win button and the other setup has you fighting against the control interface. Neither would be ideal although I suppose you could roll with the proper control scheme only switching to Wait mode when it gets unfair as a compromise.

Hopefully that worse case scenario doesn't come to pass and both modes deliver some gameplay improvements - even offering good reason to play the game twice with each control scheme as a unique experience.

Their marketing has been brain-dead in its decision-making.
They legit thought that showing a God of War-like boss encounter (albeit a poorly demonstrated one) and a thrown together gimmicky VR demo would appeal to casuals.
Ditto for their assortment of FF15 Universe offerings that have little to do with the game itself (of which they introduced yet another today).
They tailored the actual gameplay showcase hosted by Tabata this afternoon for the long-time series fans (hence why they elected to unveil Wait mode there).

I just want to pop back into this thread to say that I talked a lot of smack on FFXV's performance yesterday (for good reason) but this combat demo with wait mode was legitimately good looking. Not perfect, but more along the lines of where it should be for its impending release.

Not to get off topic but, you know how the original FFs (like 1-6.... And 9) all of their battle music had very similar, practically identical base lines? It basically was a series staple much like the moogle and chocobo.

Well check this out

FFXIII XIV and XV all feature main battle themes with similar base lines too (more accurately, identical base rhythms) I'm not sure if this is intentional or a happy coincidence but I think it's kind of cool

So I've been watching a lot of the gameplay and scenes and stuff. And the one thing that keeps bothering me is the thing that everyone's hair is doing. I'm not sure what the technical term is but why does everyone's hair look "frizzy"? like not smooth I guess.

For me, I still think their feet connect to the ground believably. Particularly in the Galdin Quay scene where they meet Ardyn. It looks like they are hovering above the ground.

Bad anti-aliasing. I'm not even sure if they'll be able to fix it as the temporal AA method doesn't seem accurate at all during motion and isn't able to cover very thin lines. It works fine and can pretty much super sample the image only when the game is perfectly still, which never happens except when the game is paused.

Thank GOD for this... my son can play all out action, and I can use Wait mode to mimic the FF's I know and love. It's a win/win!

In addition to Active and Wait, we got a stealth confirmation of an adjustable Difficulty setting. They haven't mentioned that before, have they?

We thought difficulty settings were gone when the devs replied to a difficulty question with the answer that there is another game mode. Here, we see that there's actually both.

Sakaguchi is the reason why we knew there were difficulty options in the game.
