Final Fantasy XV Impressions: Mark All Spoilers

Both have the same director.

I was being serious. You can see a distinct voice throughout the Miyazaki directed Souls games(and I say this despite liking DSII a lot). Same goes really for most strongly director driven games.

I'm just curios if that's the same case with Tabata given that the only experience I had with a directed game from him is Type 0.

Welp, without any advance notice the game dropped in my mailbox! Time to get started (have fast Internet, so patch will download in 10 minutes) soon!

I honestly don't know what to say here when it comes to comparison since both are widely different games.

We can get a clear idea if Tabata makes a game that is not based on the idea of someone else.

Correction: One team delivered a game.

Yes, they delivered a game.

Let me just wait for Nomura to pump out Final Fantasy Versus so I can compare the stories, plot and characters.

How is it fine? How is it even passable?

The only thing the writing does a remotely decent job with are Noctis and crew. Unless the writing gets a hell of a lot better in the last third to fourth of the game I don't see how anyone can say this is good.

Yikes. Posts like these are making me wonder whether I should even bother picking this up. Final Fantasy has always been a narratively messy series, but most still manage to be more than the sum of their parts. Sounds like maybe that isn't the case here...

"Opinions" and all that, but this level of disappointment better not be reflected in Monday's reviews.

Here is the opinion from one of the journalist who is reviewing the game.

As I said in the other thread: I am excited to be able to talk more about this game (and y'all should really check out Kotaku on Monday at 10am ET) but I will say that it's silly to judge the story based only on leaked cut-scenes, as so many people are doing in this thread. As I've said before based on the ~12 hours I spent on the preview build, a lot of the character development really unfolds while you're driving around and exploring the world with your party of bros. Without that context, it's impossible for anyone to tell whether the story resonates with them.

Also, Kingdom Hearts' story is hot garbage.

I would expect professional reviews to be as all over the map as player impressions have been.

There will be only a few reviews on Monday.

No I'd say it's more than the sum of its parts. Unless you're talking about the narrative specifically, because it really isn't good. The gameplay is great though.

Spoilers: This is a video I came across on Youtube which summarizes some the hardcore FF fans opinion of FF XV
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAsSxnWovPM

Not my opinion, I just found it interested looking at his huge Final Fantasy collection and his impressions of the game

Plays 1 hour and rants like he spent 20 hours playing it.

I have my worries about the game and I've been wary of it for years now, but this guy is just a Grade A dumbass.

I don't think I've ever played a game so polarised by amazing production values and lack of meaningful content.

I'm prepared to give the game the benefit of the doubt and keep playing, but these first few hours aren't gripping me at all.

In future preview your tags before you post to make sure they're working.
Honestly I've been playing like 5 hours now and most of fit has just been sat in the car

Does anybody know how to get rid of this marker (in the middle of the screen)?

31218360626_3c2454622c_o.png

It's the marker for the automatic Regalia travel. Problem is, once you are at your destination it stays there until you travel to another destination, then it stays there and so on. It's really annoying me, because it is often right in the middle of the screen even if mountains are in the way.
Is there a way to get rid of the on-screen markers in general? On the mini map they're fine but I don't want them right in the middle of the screen. :/

I wasn't trying to judge XV as I have played neither what was playable of Versus XIII nor XV. I just wanted to stress that XV is by all accounts (and that includes XV's development team) a fundamentally different game than Versus XIII.

I like how you're comparing a trailer to a full fledged game. XV Noctis had much more chances to show some nuances, so it would be incredibly bad if he DIDN't turn out to be a more nuanced character than Versus XIII Noctis.

I didn't play the game, though. I'm comparing trailers to trailers.

The scenes I've mentioned can be seen in the Uncovered trailer.

I agree. I just don't think you can compare a full fledged Final Fantasy game (like XV) to a series of trailers, concepts and interviews as some are trying to do (as is Versus).

It's a lopsided comparison as the issues present in XV aren't going to be found in a comparison with a game that does not exist.

isnt that a custom marker? just go to the map and press square over it, or twice to toggle it in place and then off.

That's reassuring, since what he's saying tends to be the reason a lot of games with iffy plots still manage to work as narrative experiences.

It reminds me of something Tarantino once said about his own films being all about the "poetry between the lines". In other words, while his films tend to feature relatively familiar plots, it's the character moments between the beats that elevate the material. Example: we've all seen movies about heists - but I can only think of one in which we gain such keen insights about Madonna before the job goes down.

Not that I'm trying to compare the quality of Final Fantasy 15 to that of Reservoir Dogs, but it's still very reassuring to hear that the interactions between characters elevates the experience. It's a "road-trip" story, after all.

Press triangle (marker filter) on the map, then deactivate this specific marker.

1.30 in, on the beach... tfw this game doesn't have characters leaving footprints in the sand but Dragon Age: Inquisition does.

~Footprints in the Sand~ - A Beautiful FFXV Poem

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my bros.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed four sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and three to my bros.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there were only three sets of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked my bros about it.
"Bros, you said once you decided to Stand By Me,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there were only three set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed you guys the most, one of you would leave me."

Prompto whispered, "My precious Noct, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only three sets of footprints,

I've heard that the patch adds the ability to summon summons, is that true? I thought that randomly spawning summons actually kind of represented their nature a bit more, they arent always going to help you

Really enjoying it so far. Graphics are nice but the framepacing on the Pro is very noticeable - I hope it gets fixed. The combat is really fun so far and Shimomura's music is just 🙏

Im on chapter 3 and the story so far meh and combat wise im not a fan. I know everyone says its more then just holdig o and i agree. But you can just hold o and kill things. I miss the old style of pressing the skill and watching it all play out like ffx.

People weren't lying when they said the dungeons were good. I'm in the first one I've found (appears to be optional) and it's really good. Very atmospheric.

Has there been any word on warp in freeroam missing in the day 1 patch. Or if it is different from crown update or its incomplete?

Yea there's depth to the combat, but no reason to use it

That, I am pretty sure, I did. But when I was out of the menu and back in the game it still was there... I'm probably just acting dumb, lol or I encountered a bug.

That would be the only bug in 6-7 hours playtime by the way. :)

People able to comment on any notable similarities between XV and Type 0?

YES. I am only around 4 hours in and already saw a lot of it.

- giant floating titles like this one:
nmgc.png

- the SO challenges during battles

- awkward real time cut scenes like this one:
omgc.jpg

- report card

- similar item icons

and possibly more. I actually have a pad ready to write them down as I play.

Thanks that's very helpful.

Looks to me like new enemies. Also in this game, I didn't find much reskins, I'd rather call them 'resize' as there are small and huge variants of majority of the monsters.
Since they went a more natural route with the monster designs the "reskins" just seem like different breeds or evolutions of the same base enemy but different enough to be distinct. They did a great job with the monsters.
