Final predictions for the Sonic 25th Anniversary party on July 22nd?

Imagine Sonic 06 but like, good. I'd be all over that like a rash.
What would that be, though? What's conceptually good about Sonic '06? Let's say they release a new, finished, glitch-free version of it, we'd still be left with:

*A ridiculous story where Sonic and a human princess kiss
*Weird towns to bring the pacing to a screeching halt
*Weird mini-games in said towns
*Really realistic visuals despite Sonic and friends being gigantic colorful freaks
*Bland vehicle and physics puzzle levels that lazily and sloppily reuse level design from Sonic's levels

In order to make this game objectively good, it would have to be a new game, dude. There's too much weirdness in it for it to be redeemable.

I think when people think "Sonic '06, but like the way it was supposed to be!" they're usually thinking of this screenshot:

SonicPS3%201.jpg

This was one of the first screens released, and hey at the time it was pretty impressive! It promised a huge open world that Sonic could run around, something never done before in a Sonic game! But unfortunately the "open world" they gave us, well, sucked. We were given bland, linear levels and towns with nothing of value to do or see in them.

That's the game, though. No more time or polish would have given us what the early images promised us. The levels would still be linear, segmented off sections from the hub world, and the hub worlds would have still been blandly stitched together cities with weird side quests.

Clear up the glitches, the loading times. You could fix that story. The mini games would be a lot more bearable with the implemented upgrade system and less loading times.

I mean sonic heroes uses the same 15 levels for all 4 campaigns, and no one minds then.

Honestly I think its a hop skip and a jump away from being 'ok'

I think they will announce 2 Sonic games. One that is a classic game and a Adventure 3/Generations 2 game. Both come out on Xbone, PS4 and PC, none of which will come out on NX me thinks

Sega would be stupid to not port whatever the game is to the NX, since most of the Sonic fanbase are on Nintendo platforms.

You can't really fix the story though... they already made these expensive, extravagant CGI cutscenes. If they were to remove weirdness like realistic humans, Sonic and Elise kissing and laughing in a field, holding hands in a flowery meadow, and Eggman with 4 golden nipples, they would've had to completely redo the cutscenes that they already made which would've been extremely costly and not worth it.

That doesn't make it good game design. As a kid I didn't care, but you know for certain there's no way I'm gonna slog through the same levels 4x each just to 100% any game ever again, no matter how good, unless it's a damn good game and the levels are substantially retooled.

Sonic Heroes isn't exactly heralded as a great or even good game, fyi. When people think of the fall of the franchise that's often the first game that comes to mind.

Maybe, but would it be worth it?

I'm not crazy about the wisps.... I mean like, they were the least intrusive gimmick SEGA has implemented into the games, but it was still that: a gimmick. I think if SEGA are truly trying to get the public opinion of Sonic back after years of silence, going back to the basics is truly the best way.

Wisps will still show up.

I like Sonic having some powerups.
Wisps were cool in Colours. They sucked in Generations and were downright AWFUL in Lost World. If they're going to return they should build the game and level design around them, and not just have them for the sake of adding a gimmick.

Personally I think the elemental shields should return. Properly. Not the way they returned as extra abilities you could equip in Generations.

I've personally been looking forward to this event more than Comic-Con next week. Nothing can top Sonic hype/disappointment for me.

It'll be a cool looking idea with piss poor execution and terrible level design.
The team just can't seem to manage when Sonic isn't being auto-piloted around the level to some degree.

The first console I bought with my own cash was a Sega Megadrive (Genesis) in 1992.
It was bundled with Sonic 1.

Sonic was really my first experience of console gaming, coming off of 8-bit computers in the 80's.

Love Sonic and agree with everyone, I really hope this new game is a decent tribute to the blue mascot.

I'm really looking forward to the announcement because I think, with the classic teasing, that there will be both a collection and a new 3d game.

If Sega doesn't screw up this Sonic game, then somehow Sega/Atlus will have my favorite lineup coming up. Sonic, Yakuza 0, Persona 5, SMT4Final. Taking Atlus up was a good idea

Screw it, let's go all in:

I predict that there will be a big compilation of damn near every Sonic game from 1991 to now on PS4/XBO not unlike Rare Replay. And with it, there will be special teases and videos for the next Sonic game.

My prediction sounds pie in the sky high but I would absolutely love to see Sega/Sonic Team do it.

Realistic prediction: Sonic Adventure 3 or Sonic Generations 2.

The cynic in me predicts that we'd get a Sonic game that's tied to the movie. If it's all 2D, I'd ignore it but otherwise I'm cautiously optimistic about it.

Since there's no new Sonic this year, I'd also predict we'd be getting remasters out the wazoo (since its the hit with many series these days). I'd mainly expect PC/PS4/X1 remasters/ports of Colors and Unleashed but a 3D Sonic collection (Heroes, Shadow, Storybook games) would be nice too.

My guilty pleasure would be for Sega to release Sonic 06 on PC, mainly for mods and for instant loading.

Does anyone know where I can get a good quality video that the screenshot Solid SOAP posted is from? It was a 'next gen' teaser for the 360/PS3 era shown behind closed doors at E3 if I remember correctly. The landscape below Sonic looked like it stretched on for miles and was a far cry from the narrow race tracks from the previous generation. It was obviously too ambitious a feat to pull off in Sonic 06 and Modern Sonic level design defaulted to the race track style once again.

I'd love a wide open Sonic game where you could run round the terrain at will for miles. I've no idea how you would make it work in a full game; Sonic Team have always had problems creating levels big enough to accommodate Sonics speed in 3D which is why the treasure hunting, shooting and Warehog all exist. But something like an open world Sonic game would be great. Think Sonic Adventure but with bigger adventure fields with more to do and no loading times between them. Action stages could be self contained areas inside each hub. Sonic Adventure on steroids.

Tbh this could be potentially exciting to me. If they do something in that vein, with the movie allegedly being a live action /z CGI combo, it's possible the game would be more similar to the adventure games in that regard.

The images they released at the beginning of the year. There was classic Sonic art used from the Sonic 1 Megadrive boxart with Green Hill Zone in the background; the Megadrive version transitioning to full blown Generations-style 3D. I can find the image and the follow up images if you're interested! It's not a hundred percent confirmed or anything but the promotional images they released heavily imply a Sonic 1 remake.

Personally my prediction is that they plan on remaking the classics starting with Sonic 1. We'll see in five days!

Green Hill is basically the standard Sonic zone used for most art in general. Unless they were specifically teasing games with Green Hill art, I doubt that it means anything.

I see a lot of criticism for Heroes, especially on the level length and design.

Honestly I just hope it's something done right. Generations played it very safe on the design choices by simply taking what worked in the last couple of games and combining all that into one really good game, and while there haven't been many releases since then I do hope the new game's overall design works on the same philosophy as Generations did.

I predict I fall asleep during the presentation.

Seriously though, I don't have any real expectations heading into it. Hopefully they show something that ends up exciting me. It's been a while since I've really been into Sonic.

I'm gonna guess either Generations 2, a refinement of the Lost World style, or something new using Modern Sonic.

As for the Wisps, I'll be okay with them returning if they're used like they were in Colors & not like in Generations or Lost World.

I remember another poster mentioning a open world type Sonic game like the intro cinematic for Sonic CD a few threads back about Sonic.

That would be my ideal new sonic game to be announced at this event, an open world playground were you can go super fast and explore at lightning speed.

Regarding the SA3 prediction you posted in the OP, I think that be an interesting idea. I liked the adventure games when they came out but playing them now has soured my view of them, the controls are way too finicky to play now. If they can make a Sonic Adventure game but with the controls of generations I be interested but please no Big the Cat campaign, hell he could be in the game if Sega wants him in it but I don't want to fish in a Sonic game.

My bet:

- Sonic 3 (& knuckles) Taxman Version
- Sonic 1,2 (taxman) for Consoles and PC
- Sonic Colours HD remaster
- Sonic Adventure 3 (or something similar) with a Chao Garden Mobile App

Expecting Classic Sonic in one form or another. Best design, and relatively untainted by the failures of Modern Sonic, and I think SEGA know it too.

They've certainly leveraged Classic's popularity in merchandising in recent years at least. Not so sure the trick they pulled with Generations will work this time, but I don't expect them to do a repeat of the last anniversary game anyway.

Honestly, it's kind of a mystery what we're going to get. It's almost exciting in that regard.

I think the only way I could be turned off the next Sonic game without trying it for myself, is if it was a "mature", Sonic Adventure 2 style game.
