Finished World 5-1 and I'm ready to Admit I was wrong about 3D World

We all had the same feeling after they released THAT trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLOKVABfrzw

The crow was delicious.

Yeah, that trailer got me really excited for the game. And when I finally got the game it was no disappointment; it's one of the best Mario games I've ever played, second only to maybe Super Mario 64.

Yes you can play as Mario(balanced), Luigi(jumps higher), Peach(hover after jump), Toad(faster)
, Rosalina(spin attack when without power-up)

Keep in mind that they all have cons as well, except for Mario.

Mario - no pros and cons.
Luigi - jumps high but is very slippery; harder to stop.
Peach - hover after jump, runs ridiculously slow (aka the easy-mode character).
Toad - runs faster than anyone but has a shorter jump.
Rosalina - not only a spin attack but also jumps as high as Luigi, runs as slow as Peach does though

Speed-running with Toad is pretty awesome (second time you play a level ghosts from other players appear; at least one of which is faster than you).

What other ways can you think of having a "difficulty" level in a platformer?

If you couldn't get through Mario 1, you could find the warp zone and skip entire worlds. Same for Lost Levels and Mario 2 USA.

In Mario 3, you had the warp whistle.

In Mario World, you had secret pathways/Star Road which helped you bypass a significant portion of the game (they even made an alternate entrance to the final level).

In NSMB and Mario 3D ____, these things are very weakly implemented, and you don't really need them anyway since the game is designed with the intention that even bad players can get to the end.

I liked 3D Land better than the Galaxies, so I'll probably love this. 3D Land > 64 > Sunshine > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1. They're all rock solid, though.
Prepare for impact.

Thanks OP for creating this thread. I stopped playing this game around halfway I believe and now I've got some motivation to go back due to the responses I've read. I didn't think the game as bad in any way but it just didn't keep my interest. I'm still a HUGE fan of SM64 closely followed by SMG2. I'm hoping that once I've seen all of what 3DW has to offer, it'll take a spot up at the top.

Do people feel that the 2 player co-op takes away from the game or adds to the game?

Is 2 player simultaneous co-op, anything people want to see again from Mario?

The game is really built with multiplayer in mind. It can't match up to Galaxy in single player, (I actually quit about world 3 from boredom on my own), but in multiplayer it's a whole different ball game, so good.

I really wish they had worked on DLC for this instead of captain toad. Nothing worse than completing a really great co-op game, since replaying levels just isn't the same.

Maybe it's going to get some stealth announced this year (hopefully)

True, but you are skipping a lot of levels. If you play Assassin's Creed on easy, you are still going to be able to experience everything that a player gaming on hard mode would.

I am not saying it is the ideal solution, but it is one that I do like.

OP, I am also doing a 100% run of the game. I'm a lot, lot further ahead than you and in terms of difficulty you'll soon find out just how wrong you are.

On my save file I have 488 Retries.

Lol damn. I'm excited to know the difficulty ramps up. I think I've died 4 times so far. Mostly with that level with the fences going up and down. The minor difficulty caught me off guard. I'm out working right now, but I keep dreaming about starting up my wii u and playing through world 5. I love love loved that beach level.

Not another 3D World Hype Thread. This game is good, nothing more nothing less. Not comparable to the other 3D Mario games, in my opinion......

There are some moments in this game that made me wonder how anyone could doubt EAD/EAD Tokyo's game design prowess. Every time I recall [that one level that cannot be named] and the gimmick with how you had to complete it in the bonus world, I just crack the fuck up for how it was able to play with a series norm so wonderfully. :lol

Yeah this game still suffers from that underwhelming first showing, which is sad, considering it is one of the best games in recent years. It will only get better from here!

Played the entirety of the game with 4 players, shit was tough. I regret not doing it singleplayer as 3D World on 3DS and Super Mario Galaxy are some of my favorite platformers.

IMO takes away if you are trying to beat the game trying to find the stamps and green stars. Tried that with my cousins and was a shitfest.

Playing randomly multiplayer after yout beat the game can be fun though.

I would have never bought it but because it came with my Wii U, I gave it a chance. After the underwhelming reveal plus the fact that it's not a "true" 3D adventure Mario, I wasn't hyped for it.

It's ridiculously easy until World 4, and from there I started to really work for completion. Once I reached the final world (which I'm guessing isn't the actual final world) I'm having such a good time I don't want the game to end haha.

Oh, yes... It DEFINITIVELY ranks up near the end. Especially the last two levels (in different ways). They're a real challenge... Nothing awfully difficult to achieve with the right character, but truly unforgiving with some others.

OP, I am also doing a 100% run of the game.
I'd suggest you play the game to the end before making plans for the real 100% (by 100%, I mean getting all stamps).

Not only it's really long, but it's probably one of the hardest Mario to 100%...

I find it interesting that Marios on Wii U are taylored for everyone during the main game, but that at the end, they're really hardcore. Getting gold in all Mario U challenges is also a huge task.

It's a very quality game, but not one that managed to leave major long term impression on me.

Maybe I just played too much 3D Land and World feels too similar to me, but I just felt like I was going through the motions through the majority of the levels. It definitely had it's great moments though like the (underused) cherry powerup, the great but too few bosses, the spotlight hat used in the ghost level(s), and the Captain Toad levels. Graphics were pretty amazing too, but I did play mostly on the gamepad which took away a bit of the splendor of playing on an HDTV, and I do miss the 3D effect from 3D Land.

I admit that I'm kinda tired of the "platforms floating in a void" design that a lot of the levels have too. It worked for Galaxy to me because the actual setting was the void of space (and some of the planetoids could get pretty large), and in Sunshine those levels were great as palate cleanser challenge stages. If they make another 3D Mario like these games I'd personally love it if they increased the level sizes (maybe not as open as 64/Sunshine, but more explorable than 3D Land/World currently are) and removed the time limit (give you time to explore and enjoy the levels at your own pace).

incredible game from start to finish. Definetely a different experience from both mario 64 and the galaxies, but still excellent.

form me

Galaxy 2 > Galaxy = 3D World = 64 > 3D Land >>>>>>>>>> Sunshine

I beat the game 100% single player. Then did it again with my girlfriend. 2 player makes the game even easier since you can take risks and then just bubble back; or someone be the kamikaze person who dies obtaining something.

My gf and I broke new Super Mario U this way. Made the game a breeze.

I got the Mario stamp last night. No more... no more...

The level where you have to light all the torches will haunt me for the rest of my days
Piranha Creeper Creek After Dark, aka the 'Cosmic trolling' level. Can make a grown man cry.

it's by far the hardest 3D mario. going 100% is soul crushing and unforgiving. it will haunt you in your dreams.
hell, lost levels feels like a kirby game compared to certain 3dw levels.

I cannot count how many times I screamed in anger.
it felt like back in the old 8bit days when I tried to finish ghostn goblins and co

Is the whole post-game part so much tougher? I expect the very final levels to be really tough but what about the rest of it?
I just finished 8-4 and so far it has been wayyyy too easy.

I was happy just 100%ing with Mario, I don't need to grab every flagpole with the other characters.

Yeah, if you're a skilled player you should be challenging yourself to collect the hidden stuff in Mario games these days. Even if you weren't though, there are also a lot beautfiul, creative, fun levels earlier in the game...I can't fathom how it took you to 5-1 to conclude that the game wasn't boring. 3-1, that snow level where you ride in kuribo's skate and get tanooki suits, is just wonderful. Mount Must Dash, the Mario Kart themed level, is another awesome one too. There's a ton of great stuff.

But people who need a big challenge or gaming is pointless will be very happy with the end game worlds.

I am not saying it is the ideal solution, but it is one that I do like.

The last thing Nintendo should do with Mario is become complacent with the way the current games are, regardless of how current fans feel. Mario is supposed to be a 10m (3D Mario) to 30m (2D Mario) franchise, not the 3-5 million franchise it has become.

Amazing game and... well, if you like challenge I have great news for you...

...man do I have great news for you T____T

The crow was delicious.

While the game was excellent, it lacked an identity of its own, Cat Mario was not enough, presentation wise, i felt it was a step down from the Galaxies, 3D World uses the same themes from all Mario games, only trying to do something different at World 8.

The soundtrack too, also introducing new characters like Rosalina could help a lot to make the games more interesting and memorable, even if he/she only speaks a few lines.

3D World uses a relatively new formula, but its based on old themes and tropes, Galaxy was more fresh because it tried something new on this aspect..

Both are good/bad. Multilayer is easier and has more crazy antics. If it was single player you could have full camera control and all that comes with that. I prefer single player with full control personally.

Better than Sunshine but not as good as 64/Galaxy/2. I enjoyed it, but the concerns about boring/easy early levels and relying on tedious collectibles to find a challenge are true. Hopefully this gets fixed next game. I hope they return to the camera view from the previous 3D Mario games as well.

I did really like how you get actual power-ups that don't disappear after a certain amount of time in this game.

The last thing Nintendo should do with Mario is become complacent with the way the current games are, regardless of how current fans feel. Mario is supposed to be a 10m (3D Mario) to 30m (2D Mario) franchise, not the 3-5 million franchise it has become.

So your proposal to increase sales is to make it more challenging? Difficulty levels in games are present to expand the audience, not to contract it.

The reason Mario 3D went from a 10m franchise to 5m franchise is not due to the game getting easier.

So I quit this game several times through the first 4 worlds each time thinking this game was boring, easy and unworthy of a mainline Mario release. I decided since I downloaded it and paid 60$ I would give it one more shot, this time collecting every green star and stamp. That has been the difference for me. It is still too easy and collecting everything is simple, but there is a lot of diversity and creativity in this game. And after just finishing 5-1, my favorite level in the game up to this point (the beach one where you get the fabulous boomerang), I am ready to admit I was wrong about Mario 3D world. Excited to 100% it.

I've been playing the game on and off since it came out. I thought yeah one of my favorite Mario's but kinda easy........Then I went I started the postgame stuff and realized there is basically a whole new game hidden after you beat the regular levels. So glorious but I also want to tear my hair out at times.
