Fire Emblem 3DS coming to NA

I don't get these conferences. First Sony has 25 Vita games and doesn't show any, opting for Wonderbooks. Then Nintendo dicks around and later casually drops Fire Emblem news.

Is its true he fucked up? Some article mentioned he asked if it was on the press materials and someone told him it wasnt.

I said "hey Reggie, is Fire Emblem coming?" He said "Yes." I did a double take and said "wait, Fire Emblem 3DS is coming to the US?" He said yep again and mentioned that it was in the press materials, which as far as I know it wasn't.

I don't know if it was necessarily a screw-up, but who knows.

Your random question that caught Reggie off-guard has saved E³. Thank you.

It's sad that seemingly all the really good stuff has been buried under mountains of shit this year, and I honestly don't know why that is, given the audiences the press conferences are aimed at. The ultimate goal is to appease investors, but if you send consumers into a frenzy, you win them over, too...

Which is all a long-winded way of saying, "This is fantastic news, and I will buy this on day 1."

Oh, Reggie... I foresee a stern talking-to from Sats in the near future.

Something else occured to me too. Wonder if the 3rd party closed mouthness has anything to do with that 3rd party employee spilling the beans on the wii u remote? They simply not want anything else to leak. At all

I can understand Nintendo just wanting to focus on 2012 for E3, but you'd think they could have been more upfront about it. They could have at least said to expect announcements regarding 2013 in the fall. There was no need to get hopes up.

its not a new IP but its a game we didnt know about. my post missed the word "things" in "things we didnt know about"

(if a game announcement isnt directed at core gamers, did it really happen?)

I kind of understand the point you're getting at, but at the same time, Nintendo could've have done ALOT by doing very little / simple things like confirming Fire Emblem to be coming. They didn't even have to make a 10 minute demo or play through, just mention it in a press release or as part of one of the game montages during the 3DS conference. Instead what was shown was what was ALREADY on their E3 All Access site. What the fuck was the point of watching the conference then?

In response to Nintendo Land, it may be fun or promising, but it's not really a title that grabs your attention. It had been mentioned by many that they probably want to use that title to introduce familiar franchises to a new userbase but that doesn't really work to quell the angst of literally hundreds of thousands of fans who expecting followups to existing IPs.

Since I am getting OT in a Fire Emblem thread, there were quite a few titles that I AM interested in (Pikmin 3, Luigi's Mansion:DM, Paper Mario, NSBM2) But like I've said, those titles were already known and CONFIRMED to be coming. While Fire Emblem was most likely coming over, it was in "limbo".

Anyways, so glad Fire Emblem has been confirmed.

They'll be facing diminishing returns if they try the same things in FE13 again, such as selling lots of previous series characters as DLC. How many people will be willing to buy some or all of those DLC characters again in FE14? Are the RPG/dating sim elements going to remain popular once the novelty wears off? FE13 was sold at a discount price, so you have to take that into account as well, not just the number of copies sold. And of course, it's arrogant to proclaim what the series "will be" like from now on.

The game is selling extremely well and I REALLY don't think think it's because of the DLC content That'd be crazy.

The RPG elements, including the ability to forge relationships that strengthen units, adds to the game and allows you to develop a stronger connection to individual characters who might not get any time in the spotlight. I would imagine not evolving the system or getting rid of it entirely would be a very poor choice.

There are a lot of reasons the game is selling well, the highest on the list being that it's a fucking fantastic game that draws in new people and series regulars alike. Positive word of mouth around here has been crazy.

Best story out of E3.

This news made my day! Nintendo E3 redeemed!

To celebrate I'm going to get Wii U at launch with New Super Mario!

...okay, maybe not at launch but if Fire Emblem is any indication of things to come and NoA localizes more games than I'll support the hell out of it!

Wii U doesn't need third party games as far as I'm concerned...it needs more games like XenoBlade, Fire Emblem, Last Story, etc.!

THANKS!
Reminds me of the Pikmin question situation in E3 2008.

I never played a Fire Emblem game but may get it once Nintendo announces a new 3DS model.

By the way, Fire Emblem: Awakening just reportedly sold 400,99 k copies in Japan.

Part of the reason it was priced low was to increase sales and gauge interest in the DLC. Remember it's Nintendo's first big experiment with paid DLC (much was made of this a few months ago). I think N would be rather disappointed if the DLC weren't at least making up the discount on the retail price. I think the opportunity to play as well known FE characters from other series is a big part of the increase in sales, drawing in players that would otherwise be uninterested.

Most FEs have some kind of relationship system, this one just takes it to FE4 levels and beyond. Do people want to have dating sim elements and making kids in every FE from now on? People laugh at games with similar themes like Conception and Idea Factory titles, but seem to give FE a free pass. I think that's going to catch up to FE eventually and give it a bad name if they stick with it.

Yes it's obviously selling well (at a reduced price, mind you), the point I'm making is that they'll be facing diminishing returns if they try the same things again, or raise the retail price, etc. Going into hyperbole about how "fucking fantastic" the game is isn't useful, especially if you're not giving reasons as to why it's good. Most of the "positive words" here have been about the relationship and dating stuff.

Note how I said evolve said systems. Maybe people will have kids but that wouldn't work outside of the story Awakening tells. Unless the next game has the exact same story setup, I can't see the child thing popping up again for a while. The relationship system is solid and forces you to rethink formations entirely. Calling them dating sim elements is silly. It's not like you're playing mini games to raise stats like you do in a dating sim. You're just having units fight next to each other and watching story sequences.

It's just another element that allows you to customize your units to your liking. If two characters are friends, you'll want to try and work that into your strategy. Reminds me of Binary Domain actually. It's also not unlike Valkyria Chronicles 3 where simply using a character results in getting their story. The little friendship/romance sequences in FE give some backstory to the side characters.

As for hyperbole, I and a few others (84 Play, RSG) have spoken on the game a few times all over GAF, so I kept it short here,

Apologize for any weird grammar/spelling. Posting from a phone.

Just wanted to say thanks for asking the tough question. You made my day.

And here I thought E3 was for announcing things like this. Twitter? Really? The 3DS conference earlier would have been much better with just an off-hand mention of this.

The safest way is to treat every Nintendo press conference like a Nintendo Direct. They're only focused on the next 3-4 months, usually on a handful of titles, and once those are released Nintendo will switch to announcing and focusing on the next batch of titles.

Like I wouldn't be surprised if Animal Crossing gets talked about as a Holiday/early 2013 title at the Nintendo Direct that will surely come after the August release of NSMB2. And NoA probably feels they have plenty of time between now and release to really show off Fire Emblem.

Well if you take away the kids and the old fortune teller guy, it's mostly the same relationship system we've seen in previous FEs. I don't doubt we'll see something like that in the future as well.

Anyway, I want to see FE do well as much as anyone, but I can't help but think that the uptick in sales is temporary.

That's great news! That makes it 5 must buy titles for my eventual 3DS revision purchase:

Code of Princess
Fire Emblem Awakening
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor OC
Super Mario 3D Land

Who da man? YOU da man!

Could they announce a fucking release date? The game is done. Even with 3 months of translation at worst, how hard is it to pick a date on a calendar?

Lots of bitter tears here. Fire Emblem fans sure are salty.

I've never doubted for a second it wouldn't get a localization.

Seeing as it wasn't supposed to be announced during E3, I'd say we should just enjoy what confirmation we got. I think it's safe to say early next year.

The Chris Remo of 2012.

Well done! Now ask about Monster Hunter Tri!

I think the opportunity to play as well known FE characters from other series is a big part of the increase in sales, drawing in players that would otherwise be uninterested.

That feature in Awakening was obviously tacked on at the end of development though, like said in the Iwata Asks interview, they can still easily improve it in the next title.

Also...

They'll be facing diminishing returns if they try the same things in FE13 again, such as selling lots of previous series characters as DLC. How many people will be willing to buy some or all of those DLC characters again in FE14?

Don't forget that most past characters are actually free, with Spotpass. 10 characters from each past FE (more in some cases). Personally, I think, just like the support system, the presence of past character is a sustainable feature that can be kept and improved in future games without making it feel "old".

We'll still get new stories and cast, but the possibility to play with (and fight against) large amounts of characters from previous games can stay there as something sustainable. Saying that this can get old, IMO, is like saying that including past Pokemon in the Pokemon games or Mobile Suits in Gundam G Generation can get old.

I think the difference is that in most of games with relationship systems you're limited to your player avatar/main character, and it's often always a male avatar. While Awakening does give some extra possibilities to the avatar, it can also be female and it's a mechanic usable between a large number of different male and female units, not needing the avatar.

As far as multiple generations goes, I guess it wouldn't be sustainable in its current form, but they could do others things if they want to keep it - like a larger timeskip. Alternatively, if they keep the Otherworld Gate in future games (for the DLC/Spotpass aspect), they could just tie them to sidequests in the gate itself, separate from the main story. What about a future game allowing you to involve past characters in this too (something that isn't possible in Awakening)?

Really, you say that these features can get old, but as long as the game has other additions, it shouldn't be a problem. IS just shouldn't randomly remove them again, like how they kicked out the support endings in FE9 and conversations in FE10 and FE 11, in spite of those being fan favorite features, just to have to bring it back right afterwards.

With twitter who needs E3?

That said, I have a feeling they did not mention it so they could do a PR second wind via the tweet or direct questions after the show to Fire Emblem (as its still the big question everyone went into the 1 hour rerun wanting to know) rather than Layton, Picross-e, will the Wii U also be a region locked mess or anything else.

In which case journalists took the bait nicely.
