Fire Emblem DS - Official site opens (and videos!)

From what I can see so far, I don't see any new or revised gameplay elements. Maybe the weapon triangle system makes it in, but other than that, I don't have much hope.

This will probably be a nicer looking version of an 18-year-old game, the fact that it really isn't much different from newer installments only shows us how stagnant this series is, and how much it needs gameplay revisions.
BAN THIS FILTH

... Looks smooth, but I still think the pre-rendered look loses a lot of detail and I'm not really happy with it....

Ever since we had the first screenshots of Fire Emblem DS, this was the first thing that came to mind. Horrible pre-rendered look of the sprites. Before we know it, we'll be nearing PoR/RD level of ugliness. :lol

But uh, still looking forward to the game. Who wouldn't be?

Didn't the OP said those are placeholder sprites and not the final ones? (this explaining their ugly look)

I'm buying this day one regardless though.

I haven't seen the videos yet, but the modern weapon skill system, rather than the old weapon skill stat, has been confirmed. Weapon triangle, more promotions and a large addition of story sequences (the original only had a few prebattle quotes, with FE3 book1 adding mostly pre and post chapters narration only) also have been confirmed. Special "save points" (one use only) in the maps have been confirmed. Myrmidons are in the game too (Navare inspired the myrmidon class in later FEs, but he was just a mercenary. Now, he's actually a myrmidon mechanically).

Most of the basic gameplay add-ons from FE3 probably are in too (like healers not needing to attack to get exp). FE only really got stagnant with the GBA games.

The characters portraits completely lack emotion. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea

Very cool stuff. Masamune Shirow? Even better. The ancient FE1 character designs were terrible (anyone remember pantless Marth?)

It's too bad this game is based on the famicom game and not the SNES remake. But still a day one import for me.

I'm going to be really annoyed if NOA chooses to rename more than half the characters again. They have valid english names already, stick with them!

Eh... the renders aren't as ugly as I feared, but it's definitely not as nice looking as the GBA games. Too bad, especially after Days of Ruin looked so nice. :/

The battle sprites look much better than the cartoony sprites of the GBA games IMO. The series has gone back to its mature RPG feel instead of its teenybopper anime feel.

Im glad those aren't in-game. I prefer the old artist's style better.

Do you really prefer this over Masamune Shirow?

What if Jeigan was no longer named Jeigan? *boggle*

Lol, not the old old style. I meant the guy that did FE6-10.

Yeah I figured that's what you meant, I was calling you out on saying "old style".

In all likelyhood the FE9/10 artist (Senri Kita) is working on the next console FE game (be it for Wii or Wii's successor).

those pre-rendered portraits are horrible. in-game graphics look like a heavy degrade from the GBA-style too.

its a shame, because im always looking forward to play a new FE.

I hope so

I'm almost positive 6-8 weren't done by Senri Kita (9 - 10).
Well now that I look at them the styles do look different. I wonder who did 6-8?

PLEASE BE FOR Wii.

Console FE with better art style, epic wifi multiplayer, and revamped gameplay mechanics.

Believe.

The only fire emblem I've ever played was the Sacred Stones, which I thought was fantastic. How does the first game in the series, which this DS version will supposedly reinvent, compare to Sacred Stones?

Fixed it for you.

Anyway, looks ok. As long as the animation is more in line with the SNES game, then I'll be happy.

Why is Minerva using an axe now? Oguma's colors have reverted back to the NES colors too. I kind of like the SNES Oguma more.

Well, first I'd recommend you play another American FE game, as they're all pretty much better (though different in ways you might not immediately like) than Sacred Stones.

You mean the inferior SNES animation? Wanna make a topic about it? :lol

Sacred Stones isn't a bad game. I'd even rank it above FE7 since FE7 was engineered for beginners whereas Sacred Stones is just a crap version of FE:Gaiden (but still fun).

PoR and RD are obviously better than the two GBA games released out here though.

You want the horrendous GBA slide shows instead of characters actually being able to walk by putting one leg in front of the other?

Yes I do. You made a topic about it, and people were wondering what you where going on about

next month's Nintendo Power almost certainly concerns an english release for this game.
umm... what proof of this is there?

Regardless, past history says this game will make it stateside next spring

It's unlikely that Nintendo will skip us over now that it's an established franchise. We haven't missed a single Wars game either. Interestingly enough, Advance Wars 1 and 2 on the GBA didn't come out in Japan until years later. I think it was packaged together in one cart. I can't be sure though.

That was because of 9-11 though.

Huh? What? 9-11 happened in America, in New York to be exact. How does that affect AW in Japan? Not to mention AW2 came out years later.

I've noticed a trend over the last several years: If something strange or bad happened, mention 9-11. This might be part of that revisionist-history-in-which-all-things-are-somehow-connected-to-911.

Can we blame bad 3rd party Wii support on 9-11 then?

Both the Japanese and European releases of Advance wars were delayed due to 9-11. I'm not sure why Japan's delay was so large, but 9-11 was the cause of the initial delay

As far as I can remember, AW was like delayed or low shipment in USA due to 9/11. I looked around a bit for the game when it first came out. And yeah, I live in NYC.
