Fire Emblem Fates Reviews Thread

Guys how much better is the New 3DS? I'm considering buying one for the new FE. I have a 3DS XL.

Truth be told I don't play on handhelds that much (it's been months since I last touched my 3DS...the last game I bought was Zelda if I'm not mistaken), but I fucking love strategy games. Played Awakening 3 times.

Money is not really an issue but if the difference is negligible then I'll just play on my 3DS.

I don't have any amiibos and don't plan on buying then.

Is it worth to do the upgrade?

I will give the old 3DS to a little cousin. His family doesn't have money to spare so I always give him my old consoles and games.

From everything you said and the fact that you have a 3ds already, then no, don't get a new 3ds.

Edit: just saw that new thing you added. Hey, if money isn't an issue and you're gonna give your old one to someone who wouldn't have gotten a system at all, go ahead.

If you use 3D it's a pretty big upgrade, also for c-stick usage and the overall speed boost is nice. If those don't sound important to the way you play then you might not get that much out of it.

So are three games normal the equivalent of awakening hard?

Or just conquest?

They're all better designed than Awakening so it's hard to say. A lot of Awakening's "difficulty" came from the fact it was an underdesigned mess with half baked maps, enemy placement, and Lunatic+'s baffling random enemy skill allocation. If you've played Awakening Hard I'd go at least hard on Birthright and Revelation. Start Hard on Conquest and turn it down if the heat's too much for you, I can see that getting a little dicey. You can turn the difficulty down at any time after the branch split.

I see. I think I'm going to get one. Thanks guys!

I"m not sure if Rev was more well designed than Awaking fwiw; alot of Rev could have used a second pass ... it was obviously rushed liked Awakening was.

Man I lost my copy of Awakening in the move to a new house, I wanted to finish before I dipped for conquest, I can't wait to play it

I'd say yes just so your relative gets a nice surprise. I like my n3ds xl it's a nice system.

I'm definitely surprised by the ign reviewer getting teary during birthright. I've never seen anything close to that sort of emotional resonance in Awakening..
I just can't take that review seriously at all now

I've heard that you can make Birthright as challenging as Conquest by turning on "Classic mode." Can anyone confirm?

Not really. "Classic" doesn't have much to do with Conquest's difficulty - you can use Casual mode there as well. It's about stage design and how much opportunity you have to train your characters. Conquest is just generally harder (though I hear the end of Birthright Lunatic can get a bit ridiculous due to how many beefed-up enemies just charge at you with wide-open maps and the like.)

The series is no more "anime" now than it was in the older games, its just that the older games were representative of the more popular fantasy anime/manga at the time whereas the new games are representative of the more popular fantasy anime/manga of today. It's no more or less influenced by anime, its just that the content of what its influenced by has changed a bit. People just need to be more direct and say they prefer the content of the older games as opposed to blaming it on some kind of anime boogeyman.

I'm older now and my interests have changed, if the game is offering a particular experience that no longer appeals to my taste, there's nothing invalid with me asking. I thought I had enough detail in there to explain what I meant by anime tropes. I'm not dissing anime itself, which I still enjoy on occasion, or overtly praising the older games, since I've only mentioned the two I enjoyed.

It's just all the things I've read about this particular game have to do with "explicit content that was removed" and people getting upset about it, and personally the "sensor" parts seem like good decisions to me, I don't feel like I'm aligned with the content of the game. But I wasn't sure if that was a small piece or a majority of time spent with these characters. Hence the question.

If it's shipping you dislike, then it's going to depend on your mindset. For Awakening I paired up my characters tactically. Who complements each other the best, how can I maximize exp and support gain between them efficiently so that I can unlock new maps, can they carry similar types of weapons, etc. It's a different layer of strategy that's enjoyable without having to have preferred ships. I plan to do the same in Fates.

If you dislike fanservice...well it should just be a few (admittedly very annoying) cutscenes and an optional mode/minigame that's easy to ignore. You should be fine if you just care about SRPG gameplay with a bit of relationship building on the side, like the earlier games.

As much as I've bemoaned the increased focus on the "shipping" element, there is some sick pleasure in matching incompatible units up as if they're in the first act of a rom com.

Im torn. I want to play a good tactics style game in bed/on a handheld, but have felt FE started leaving me whine post Radiance games. Mostly because of the overtly anime cliche direction the series has gone. I found it a turn off in Awakening, and never finished. I hear this double downs on those tropes?

Sexualization of anime women, dating games, petting, etc, are not really selling points for me in a game I want to spend 20+ hours on story and characters.

No go or it's not so in your face and gameplay is dynamic enough to carry me?
If dynamic gameplay is what you want, make sure you go with Conquest.

I had hype levels pretty under control until reviews. Plus Amazon just told me they shipped it. I honestly can't wait to get addicted to FE again--and this time with 3 (!) games? I've played every FE since the first one came stateside and on each one I spent an unhealthy amount of time.

Bring on Friday.

I mean, the only thing that was removed was the ability to take any recruited unit and poke at their faces. Everything else is seemingly intact.

So if Awakening was a hard turn off, I don't think this would be any better. Conquest is apparently a good ass strategy game though, so if you're more interested in a fire emblem that redeems its goofy bullshit with good gameplay, that'd be your best bet.

We will always hear about negativity in anything because negativity is louder on the internet. If you look at the actual gameplay itself I don't see anyone complaining.

That's always been what's great about FE's permadeath. Being able to kill off the characters that fulfill anime tropes that I despise.

We can now say that anime nowadays are trash :>

(And yeah most CG cutscene with camilla are cringe inducing)

That's always been my approach. Dragon girls, annoying children and tedious fools that join my army for plot reasons have their equipment removed and get assigned to a 'special' mission called 'operation find the enemy' as soon as possible. The best thing about running the army is being able to 'let people go'. It's always nice watching the ending and having four or five characters listed as 'died in x chapter'. "Ah, I remind myself. The charge of the chaff brigade". :D

I wish more games had some way of ditching the more annoying characters. 'Thanks for bringing a healing potion and a nice new weapon though, I'll make sure that gets to somebody competent. And your sacred dragonstone will sure buy us a lot of javelins'.

Are you simply in the "Make Fire Emblem great again" camp, because what is wrong with those reviews? Conquest actually does a lot like the earlier games too, so not sure where you're coming from.
I mean, what's the point of having seperate reviews if you're just going to give them the same score, or in IGN's case, one decimal away of the other? I especially like Game Informers' 9.25 for both games. Just put it in one review, highlighting the good and bad qualities of each one in seperate paragraphs. That way people can get a more informed opinion by reading one article. At least GameSpot kind of got the right idea.

Now it's a bit like recommending to get both games, which is a bit silly since they're catered towards different audiences. That's 60, or 80 if you want to get the third one as well, American dollars for essentially one game. I don't care how much content there is, they could have packaged it as one and sold it as a normal 3DS game.

Question on buying 2 versions:

If I buy one version physically and the other digitally right away, when I get to the decision point where the games branch off does it offer me a decision to go either way, or do I have to load the other game to do the opposite choice?

Same question if I get both digitally.

Any links to where this kind of stuff is discussed is also appreciated.

You're meant to buy the second version as dlc which only opens up right after the choice. You're wasting money if you don't, since it's at half price if you buy it as dlc.

You buy the other campaigns digitally in-game and it all gets added together. So you boot up your Birthright cart or whatever and you'll have access to Conquest and Revelation. Each campaign you own adds 3 extra save slots and additional bonus items.

Thanks for the quick responses. I understood that the 2nd version would be $20. So that's only if I buy it from within the game which unlocks at/after the decision point? Does this mean I would need the cart to play the digital version I bought afterwards since it's technically "dlc"?

I was hoping to buy 1 cart to have at least one physical copy and buy the 2nd digitally half off and then have a copy I wouldn't need to load a cart for, but if the 2nd is dlc to the first I guess that wouldn't work out, then.

I mean, probably. I think most of the data for the alternate routes is actually already on cart/ included in the original download, since the file size for additional routes is apparently much, much smaller than downloading your main route

Yes. You will need the cart/original because all of the shared assets(models/music/artwork/etc.) are not downloaded again for obvious reasons.
